"They were sort of the head soldiers of the medieval era," Cassie explained. "Chosen by the ruler for their honor and courage and -- well, okay, mostly for their landed titles and ability to kiss ass enough, but supposedly it was about honor and courage and valor." She shrugged. "Also it means the opposite of day, but that's a different spelling."
