The Beach, Monday Afternoon

Merlin's first 'class' in the afternoon had granted Arthur a good excuse to dismiss the boy early that morning. While his presence was a comfort (a fact Arthur would not be quick to admit to), it had severely limited Arthur's ability to think about their problem clearly.

He'd roamed the island in search of another way out, but as he had already expected, there was none. Loath to return to the dorms, where he wouldn't be allowed to carry his sword, Arthur slowed when he reached the beach.

He'd seen a plane of water this large only a few times in his life. The lakes near Camelot tended towards the smaller. He spared a look towards the horizon for orientation, then peered down at the ground.

He slipped his sword out of its sheath with the hand attached to the arm he could actually use, swung it once to test his strength, and then moved into slow practiced drills.

It had been a while since he'd gotten to use the sword, and there was little that made him feel more useless or pathetic than being unable to do so. By now his damaged shoulder had healed enough to take the chance one-armed, and he felt relieved.

Maybe he should consider simply keeping a broom nearby at all times inside the dorms. They could be good fun. In combat.

"Merlin, trouble? You have met the guy, right?" Dinah laughed, too amused by the idea to take any offense on Merlin's behalf. "No, he was really sweet." She turned a little pink at that. Close-up, Arthur was even better looking than she'd expected, but a little touch of wariness from Merlin's comments kept her from spazzing. "So, did you get the Beast, or did it get away?"

"Good! Wouldn't want a poisonous deadly beast on the loose in Albion." Dinah nodded in approval, smiling, one pro to another. Well. Sure, she went after criminals, but some of them were really creepy. "That's your job, when you're not doing whatever else princes do, hunh? How bad did you get hurt?"

See, now, he wasn't so bad. Of course, he wasn't her boss, and she gave Barbara endless grief about how to fight the bad guys, so she could guess where Merlin was coming from. "Sorry to be all nosy. Merlin said some interesting stuff about where you guys were from, and everything here is so new and cool, I just had to ask. I'll leave you to your practice if you want, I know that's important."

She would not ask if Merlin had a girlfriend. Would not.

"A food shortage? As skinny as he is?" Dinah laughed, amused again. "Maybe we can fatten him up here while you're recovering. You'd have to stay a while though." She might have sounded hopeful about that; Merlin was a cool guy, even if she wasn't looking for a boyfriend. Really! "I mean, Northumbria or whatever can wait, can't it?" She tilted her head, wheedling. "Isn't this place too cool to leave yet? People from all different places! Crazy teachers! Alleged princes who try to make you sing!"

Dinah looked wistful at that maybe-maybe-not answer, then blinked. "Tomatoes? What, does he act? Or sing really, really badly?"

"Stocks? Euuugh." Dinah made a face, and said without thinking, "Kinda barbaric. Sheesh, what does he do to earn that?" Seriously. He was nice! And it wasn't like he'd steal stuff or beat people up... right? "Start fights in taverns?"

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah gave Arthur a disgruntled look. "Well, that's no fair. If someone can be put in the stocks for not shutting up, I'd be doomed. And then they throw food at him! That's just... just... "

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"What?" Dinah's voice spiraled up as she got upset. "No! No chopping off heads! Are you kidding me? Is Albion really like that?" Well, duh. She'd just assumed it was the same as America, except with horses and knights, but with chivalry and... no, guess not. "Horrible! And wrong! And I hope you guys never go back if they treat him like that there!"

Because it never occurs to her that Arthur might be one of the people sending Merlin to the stocks for his smart mouth.

Dinah opened her mouth again, then snapped it shut, not sure how to take that. It was disturbing and it made her furious, but maybe saying as much to Merlin wouldn't go over any better with him than it had with Arthur. Too much she didn't understand. Proceed with caution, said the little voice in her brain that she associated with Barbara.

"I will," she said, more subdued. "I wouldn't insult him or, or want to upset him." She took a long breath, let it out, then carefully said, "Thanks for talking with me. Good luck with the fencing exercises."

Arthur wasn't just a prat like she'd thought she might be, and he did fight Questing Beasts to protect people and seemed to be pretty fond of Merlin, and nothing was automatically simple, was it?

Dinah climbed back up the dune without saying good-bye, turning all that over in her mind, and thinking that maybe she'd call home tonight. Things always made more sense when she'd talked them over with the others.
