The Streets of Fandom, Friday Afternoon

"Alright, guys!" Zack's arms were crossed over his chest as he looked around the streets. Handwavey Messages had been left on the phones of anybody who had exchanged numbers at past Reserve meetings, Martial or Magic, and people had been told to bring whatever they needed in order to go zombie-fish hunting. "This is kind of like the time we had alligators burping goldfish, but this time, there aren't any gators, and the fish mean business. I don't want anybody setting off to face them down on their own, you hear me?"

He casually ducked as a swarm of piranha zipped by, where his head had been a moment before.

Karla sent a flare of Sapphire power after the swarm, dropping them in mid-air. Hello! They were talking here! No reason to be man-eating and rude.

"There's no reason for anyone to keep fighting while injured, or anything like that, so if you get bit or something, head back to the dorms or the clinic and have someone stitch you back up," Karla continued. "The last thing any of us want is some kind of suppurating flesh wound. They're gross."

While Karla spoke, the piranhas had undergone their zombiefication and flung themselves back up into the air, heading back for the group.

"Great. Also, it looks like you have to kill them twice."

A well-aimed Fira spell courtesy of Zack took care of the re-raised fish, and after a moment taken to poke at one of the char-broiled bodies with his toe, Zack shrugged and looked to the group.

"Let's get to it, then, and show these fish that they're messing with the wrong island!"

[This was always in the streets, ssh. OCD-Free and open to all! If you think you got a message, then you totally did, but anybody is welcome to meander on in to check out the action! Co-Written with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] glacial_witch, of course!]

"Craft," Karla explained. "Err, magic? I'm a witch. It's an innate ability of my people, the Blood."

Ah, the part of this place that Cally had just been letting slide past her ears, certain -- well, pretending to be certain -- that what people were calling magic was only science of a level too advanced for their education to explain.

"Some form of telekinesis?"

"That's part of it, considering I can float things," Karla said. "But basic Craft itself is much too complex to be labeled as any one thing."

Besides Craft, of course.

"Some time when we're not in combat, I can give you a run down of what I can do?" she offered. "It's...kind of long."

Cally raised both eyebrows, but nodded, keeping an eye out for the next rush of fish heading their way. "Some among my people can move objects with their minds, but it's very rare. Certainly nothing like what you just did."

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-09-18 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"It's pretty rare for this world, too," Karla said with a nod. "But, in my world, it's part of being a member of the Blood. Even those who are too weak to wear a Jewel still have basic Craft."

Good job, Karla! That wasn't confusing at all!

Not so confusing, given the jewel about her neck if it was visible, but still slightly more complex than Cally's society. "I comprehend the idea, if not the mechanism. Only a few of my people have other psionic powers, but everyone under thirty or so is telepathic."
glacial_queen: (Intense)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-09-18 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Really," Karla said, tossing a gout of Sapphire energy at another swarm of approaching piranhas. Her hand came up to fiddle with her Jewel as she asked, "Everyone under thirty? That's very specific. I'm assuming there's a reason for that...?"

Intrigued Karla was intrigued.

"It's a by-product of our replication process." Cally trained a stream of blaster fire over the ones that flopped back up into the air. "Such gifts occurred naturally in the population before it was perfected, but now all the children are born with it."
glacial_queen: (Conversation)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-09-18 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Replication process?" Karla asked. "Is that a fancy way to talk about childbirth, or is it more complicated than that."

Stupid piranhas! Karla would much rather be sitting down, chatting about this over tea or something.

[personal profile] onlymistaken 2010-09-18 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
As would Cally. Though after today, perhaps one of those coffees with a kilo of chocolate and whipped cream in would suit better.

"More complicated, yes." To say the least. "We use genetic manipulation techniques and artificial gestation machinery; our infants can be created and born in a matter of days."
glacial_queen: (Ooooh)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-09-19 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
And alcohol. Don't forget the alcohol!

"Fascinating," Karla said, in a voice that suggested she truly was fascinated. "Are you still capable of childbirth the natural way--whatever that way might be for your people--or has that changed with the onset of this new technique?"

In a few minutes, she might realize that was a rude question. Maybe.

"Well, not so new, I suppose, if the earliest generation is about thirty. Oh! Does that mean you are a telepath, too?" Cally looked under thirty, but if their gestation lasted only a few days, who knew how their aging process worked?

"Look out." Which answered nothing, but Cally had sighted another swarm heading their way, and was busy firing a long blast into the center of it.

//Yes,// she added while still staring down the fish. //To all of that. Just almost no one does anymore.// She smiled slightly, though it was a bit wasted on the piranha. //Not that people have stopped going through the motions for recreational purposes.//

*If they had, that would have left me thinking your people were very strange,* Karla said with all due amusement of an empath living in a dorm full of teenagers. She sent small bolts of energy at the swarm, aiming for the ones Cally had downed the first time. *There are some things which remain constant no matter what dimension or galaxy.*

onlymistaken: (looking - off right)

[personal profile] onlymistaken 2010-09-20 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Cally spared her a glance after taking out two of the stragglers. "You're a telepath as well! Ben said there were more, but so far I'd only met one student and one teacher."
glacial_queen: (Sapphire-Jeweled Queen)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-09-21 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Karla nodded. She didn't necessarily consider herself a telepath, as speaking on psychic threads was just another facet of Craft, but the designation was close enough to what she could do that she didn't think it was worth arguing semantics. "There are," she confirmed. "And at least a few others who have been around telepaths enough to have minor shielding and the ability to think clearly when they're trying to communicate via thought."

Karla wondered in Cally, having been raised in a society where many people were telepathic, had ever had to deal with trying to get information out of an untrained mind--otherwise known as 'chaos.'

[personal profile] onlymistaken 2010-09-21 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"That wouldn't help me, I'm afraid," Cally said. //My people can project our own thoughts, but can only hear the thoughts of other telepaths.//
glacial_queen: (Head-tilt Huh)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-09-21 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really," Karla mused. "I wonder if that has anything to do with the way it was added to your people. Most of the telepaths here have to work to keep people out."
onlymistaken: (Default)

[personal profile] onlymistaken 2010-09-22 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I suspect it's some facet of our natural biology; it was the same for those with the power before we started cloning."
glacial_queen: (Thoughtful)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-09-22 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
"It's a much kinder version of telepathy than some of the others have dealt with," Karla murmured. "Perhaps it evolved that way, over however long your people have manifested telepaths."

"It is possible," Cally allowed - then grimaced as a piranha latched onto her boot. Stamping didn't shake it off, but a good kick from the other boot did.

Crushing it beneath the sole before it could get its bearings and fly again was rather satisfying.

"It makes things very silent, though, when we're away from each other."
