Caritas [Tuesday evening]

While Robin had had a fun time last week with the blizzard, being back to normal ambient coolness was not neeearly as much fun. So by the time she'd gotten to the bar, she'd already saved up a bunch of ire to throw at Tino, only to find that he wasn't there, and that there was a text asking her to, in fact, 'suck it' on her phone.

Oh, how the tables had turned.

It wasn't like Jane to imbibe in drink while on a mission, but she didn't think it make much sense to come into a bar without having a drink, even if she was doing observational research on the reanimated corpses. She'd hate to cause a fuss with any accusations of soliciting, after all.

So she ordered herself just a pint of beer that she would probably only nurse a little as she flipped out her notebook and got very quickly to some disturbingly detailed sketches of the band.

"Oh!" Jane, who had gotten quite absorbed in reproducing the fine details how how the bassist's bone structure showed so nicely through that hole in his torso, glanced over her shoulder with a bit of a surprised and sheepish smile. "Thank you! I practise quite a bit, and it will be terribly exciting to come in next week and be able to compare the tendencies of decomposition between now and then! I'm Jane, by the way, Jane Porter; a pleasure to meet you! Do you have any personal observations to offer regarding the reanimated corpses? Any knowledge you might have about them would be most helpful."

"Really?" asked Jane, blinking a little and sounding terribly disappointed, but that lasted just the briefest of seconds before her expression brightened again.

"Really?" she asked, this time with excited intrigue as she flipped her sketchbook over to an empty page and held her pencil at the ready. "Three years, you say? And they've hardly changed? Oh, they must be marvelously preserved, then! You don't suppose it's the alcohol that does it, do you? You must have observed quite a lot in three years; do you know who reanimated them? I'm afraid the last barkeep I asked hadn't been here nearly as long."

"Ah, yes," said Jane, nodding as her pencil was a flurry of noting these things down. "The duct tape. Fascinating material, the barkeep showed it to me the last time I was in. Who might your husband be? And would you mind terribly if I asked him, perhaps not just about the reanimated corpses, but the wildlife on the island in general? It's a bit of a project of mine, you see, and if he's got even more experience, I'm sure he'd have a wealth of knowledge to share."

"Oh, yes!" Jane brightened with recognition. "Of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police! You know, I didn't even know Canada had a mounted police until I met Mr. Fraser, and then he told me all about moose, and, you know, when I'm not so busy with teaching, I shall have to go right up there to Canada and see the fantastic creatures for myself! So there's the answer to your other question; I teach at the school. Primatology, if you'd believe it! I've spent so much of my life studying primates and now I'm thrilled to be able to pass my knowledge on to eager young minds! Though I do work in town, as well, although not entirely on purpose. I sort of found myself in the role of a shopgirl at the Turtle & Canary store. If the girls back home knew that part....it's bad enough I'm teaching, but, then again, those ladies always were a little...judgmental about a lot of things, you know."

Yes, Jane had thought that the girls she went to school with would have quite a few things to say about a married woman tending a bar, but she wasn't so inclined to make judgments.

"Oh, I should hope so," Jane said with a laugh, "otherwise, I don't know why I'm teaching it! But, yes, it's the study of monkeys and orangutans and apes, and any primate, really, even humans, because you know there's some marvelous studies to show just how closely related we are to our simian brethren, you know. Primatology, as it is, is not only a study of monkeys, but a study of ourselves."
