She laughed. "I am, aren't I? In England I'm afraid I never felt quite warm enough so I learned this little trick then."

"Nothing wrong with that," Max pointed out. "In fact, it's very practical of you."

"I thought so," she said a bit smugly. "Um... you don't mind that I..." she gestured around them with a free hand, hoping he didn't mind she'd extended the warmth to him.

"Not at all," Max assured her. "In fact, it's appreciated." Not that Max didn't have his own ways of dealing with the cold, but this was quite nice.

"So... what have you been up to? It has been far too long since we spoke, after all."

"It has been some time, hasn't it," she said, blushing a little more. "Well, I'm afraid I haven't done much at all. I told you I can be a bit of a hermit. I work at the clinic on Saturdays, and at the store of course, and other than that, Proudfoot and I mostly hole up in the house - particularly in the winter."

"Ah, but Millie, that's so cruel. To deprive everyone of your lovely company."

Flatterer.

Millie laughed. "You're quite the flatterer, but rather foolish. I don't believe anyone is pining away for lack of my presence!"

Well, she was right about the first two... "I can name at least one person," Max countered.

"Oh? she said, raising an eyebrow.

"Myself, of course." He glanced over at her with a playful smile.

She gave him a mock assessing glance. "You don't seem to have wasted away."

No, he was still a very fine figure of a man!

"I'm just good at faking good health," he teased.

"Or maybe it's just that now I've seen you again, and that's counteracted the effects."

She laughed again. "You're even better at the flattery than I remembered!"

"I've had a lot of practice," he laughed. "And, besides, it's even mostly true."

She shook her head, smiling at him fondly. "Oh you."

"Oh me what?" Max managed to look... well, mostly innocent.

"I think you know very well what," she said with a smile and a bit of a nudge.

"Maaaaaybe," he allowed, absorbing the nudge with a laugh.

"So... dinner?" he suggested.

"I admit I am rather hungry," she said with a smile. "What would you suggest?"

"Well, if you're feeling brave, we could go back to my place and I could cook something." Not really Max's forte, but... it might be fun?

She considered, then nodded. "I'd like that. And I can help you put something together if you want."

It sounded like a lovely evening to her!

"Well, then. Let's go!"

"I just hope I've got some decent ingredients." He probably did.

"Lead the way," she said with a smile. "I'm sure we'll manage with whatever you've got."

"I'm glad you have faith in me." Max grinned and began turned, leading Millie back toward his place.

"I do," she said seriously.

Millie was more than happy to go along with him. She enjoyed the walk, but she was eager to get inside.
