Atlas Gym, Thursday Afternoon

Clint had thought that the most difficult part of his day would be to figure out how to write up his latest report to Fury without having to mention the past weekend. As it turned out, the difficult part was figuring out how to do much of anything with a tiny terrier on his lap, demanding all of his attention.

"I already scratched your belly," he said, his hand moving nonetheless as the little puppy rolled over and looked up at him. This was so not going to end well for Clint.

Kitty was pretty much here for one reason, and it might be apparent by the little cocker spaniel following her and nipping at her heels. "Did you get a puppy, too?"

Hi, sometimes she was five.

"I had no idea that's what would be inside the ball, but yeah," Clint said, still scratching away. "Now I know what 'painfully adorable' means."

Kitty bent down to pick her puppy up, because you could only go so long without cuddling him. "It's like we all got free puppies as presents. Today I love this island, I swear."

"I guess I have to admit, it's making up for the weekend," Clint said. "Yours is pretty adorable."

She lifted one of his paws to make him wave. "I don't know that I'm keeping him, but meet Joe Cocker spaniel," she said. Not only was she five, she was a dork. "Who've you got there?"

"Should I have named him? Because the only thing he seems to answer to is 'Hey, get off of that,'" Clint said with a laugh, picking the puppy up off of his lap and holding onto him when he realized there really was no safe space on the desk.

She smiled and said, "I guess it depends. Are you keeping him?"

"Do you think I can? Won't he go back to... I don't know, wherever he came from in a day or two?" Clint had almost, sort of started to understand how Fandom things worked.

"I don't know," Kitty said, frowning suddenly. "It'd be really mean to take away all our puppies..."

Natalie was mostly just checking in. There was nothing following her – she wasn't the type to go opening random balls, not on this island.

"The only thing that surprises me is that you don't have more than one."

"I wouldn't know what to do with more than one. I only have so many hands," Clint protested, looking around. "You don't have any little followers?"

"I've been here a year, I'm wary of Fandom's shenanigans," Natalie informed him in a neutral tone. "Besides, I probably smell like a cat, anyway."

Because she had one. She didn't just randomly have cat scent on her.

"They might be wary of me too."

Clint picked his puppy up and planted him on the desk, facing Natalie. "I don't know, this little guy doesn't seem too wary. Then again, he doesn't seem wary of much of anything. No self-preservation whatsoever."

"I've met people like that," Natalie noted, as she tentatively held out a hand towards the puppy, in case it wanted to sniff at her or something. "Lots of them. I think I have a harder time grasping how they survive than how a puppy does."

"At least puppies have the cute thing going for them." And there was case in point as Clint's puppy sniffed at Natalie's hand and then butted his head against her fingers. "I guess if helpless people can make others want to take care of them, they can get by."

"Helpless people have a tendency to get annoying fast," Natalie replied. While giving the puppy a few sritches behind the ears. It was only natural. "I think I'd be more likely to help animals."

"Helpless animals don't argue with you when you try to help them. Or work actively against you to make things worse. Not that people would ever do that," he said with a hint of sarcasm.

Natasha came into the gym followed by a wee black kitten, which she kept shooting disbelieving looks at. "That thing's been following me around for an hour," she complained.

Only Natasha.

"Have you given it a name yet?" Clint asked with a smirk. "Something fluffy?"

"Don't be ridiculous," Natasha said. "Why would I name it?" She refused to let herself get attached, Clint. You hear her? Refused.

The kitten plonked itself down by her foot and started licking its paw. Adorably.

"So the kitty knows it's loved, of course," Clint teased. "I think it wants you to pet it. They seem safe enough." He nodded at the puppy in his lap, who gave a helpful bark.

Natasha pointedly raised one eyebrow. Because love was for who, Clint? That's right: children. Clearly cuddling fuzzy baby animals fell into the same category. So instead of petting the kitten she sort of nudged it gently with her toe. The kitten fell over and batted at her foot.

"...this is ridiculous."

Clint was doing his absolute best not to laugh, but come on, that was just adorable. "You have to admit, we could be dealing with something much worse right now. A little cuteness won't hurt anyone, right?"

"You'll regret saying that when they turn out to be aliens who bite your throat," Natasha told him, but she didn't really sound like she thought that was going to happen.

"So, what, the batting going on is just your kitten softening you up to make you easier to chew later?" Clint asked. "I'm pretty sure I could fight off a tiny, rabid puppy if I had to." Not that he expected that either.
