The Magic Box, Sunday, July 13
It was Sunday evening. Maybe in other, better cities people were waking up from the naps they took to sleep off Grandma's pot roast dinner after church. Maybe they were riding bikes under streetlights or swinging on suburban porch swings, counting fireflies.
But this was Fandom, and Fandom Sundays were a lot like any other day. Which meant the magic had to keep coming. Anders had an opening shift, which meant he had to sweep up the cigarette butts and wipe the sticky rings of dried hooch off the tables, and check to make sure all the props and sheet music were in order for the night. It was dumb, and dull, and more than a little gross, but it kept him on the owners' good sides and that was where he liked to be.
He fretted as he went through the routine of busywork. The kid, Elsa -- the chatter backstage was that she was up for a couple special jobs. She was way too young for anything like that, but Anders wasn't the type to stick his neck out, not when it would just give somebody like Angelface a perfect chance to slit his throat. Besides, Karla wasn't dumb. If anybody could going to keep Elsa pure, Karla could.
Once the club was in tip-top shape for the night, Anders went backstage to get into costume, chat with the girls, and wait for the show to begin.

Re: After the Show - Backstage
Angelface really didn't seem terribly concerned about her voice, all things considering. He'd made considerable losses this weekend. He had a business to run.
"Old enough I might be able to lure in a decent pot tonight while playing with the boys."
It wasn't his fault nobody had told him about the raid on George's today.

Ha. It was entirely possible for the stakes to be set too high, even for Angelface. He was shaking his head, stepping past Karla to reach for Elsa's wrist with no hesitation at all.
"How very noble of you."
See how impressed he was.

Well. This was a new development. Angelface's eyebrow twitched upward just slightly as he looked down at the songbird currently folded around him.
"This is only business, doll. But I suppose I could be persuaded..."
He barely stopped long enough for Elsa to protest with a soft, "Karla, don't..." before pressing onward.
"You find a way to meet the cost of not working you girls in the future. You find it damn fast."

Re: After the Show - Backstage
"She'd have to work five times the shifts to even begin to make back the profits we'd get in by having her in the back." Angelface didn't take his eyes off of Karla's, in turn. "She's lucky her voice draws a crowd, but not that lucky."
She hadn't mastered the art of fucking the audience with her eyes. They always seemed to be turned toward the same spot every night.

Angelface watched Karla for a moment, and then turned to look at Elsa, who immediately shrank down a little, as though making herself smaller would somehow make him look away.
"I'm not terribly certain you've noticed, but she's already very much in it." He raised an eyebrow as he looked back at Karla. "And you have yourself to thank for that one. Nobody's lining up to pay to have an arsonist for the night."
Re: After the Show - Backstage
As soon as Warren's eyes came back to her, she was shooing Elsa away with her hands. Out of sight, out of mind?
Re: After the Show - Backstage
Not even remotely out of mind, but Angelface was willing to let it slide. Just this once. It wasn't as though he didn't know where to find the girl, after all.
"Aside from that reputation of yours, what is there that you could possibly offer, I wonder?"
He had a few ideas.

Re: After the Show - Backstage
Angelface raised one eloquent eyebrow at the gesture, taking in the sight of the young woman standing before him, baring far more skin than he'd seen in any of her musical acts.
Yes, he did very much like what he was seeing, and he wasn't even going to stop himself from stepping forward, reaching one hand out to run his fingers delicately, almost reverently, over the skin of her back.
"I beg to differ. You have a reputation about you that I'm very interested in."

Re: After the Show - Backstage
"Don't you?" Angelface didn't look convinced for even an instant. "I suppose you wouldn't have any business, listening to the rumors. Very well."
His hand drifted upwards, so that his fingers were tracing up her neck, and then tangling in her hair. He balled that hand into a fist.
"Your sister's freedom, guaranteed safety from the back rooms, in exchange for you. I wish to make you mine."
Re: After the Show - Backstage
The answer came to her. "My sister's freedom in exchange for becoming your mistress." She didn't even have to pause, have to think. "Done."
Thank the Darkness Elsa wasn't here to watch her sign herself away to keep her safe.
Re: After the Show - Backstage
"No." Angelface inclined his head a little. "More than that. My wife."
He wanted something a little more permanent. He wanted it on paper.
Re: After the Show - Backstage
After so long of playing the role of nobody important, she sometimes forgot who she truly was.
Re: After the Show - Backstage
Angelface simply raised an eyebrow at her and looked at her in silence.
He wanted to see how long it would take for her to figure it out.
Re: After the Show - Backstage
And power?
Re: After the Show - Backstage
Mostly the power, really. Money was just very good at buying it.
"You're both still alive," he noted, mildly. "Marriage papers would still be very easy to forge should something unfortunate happen, of course."
He'd get far less out of the deal by presenting a dead crown princess than a live one, and he'd rather it not come to that, but the possible benefits were still enough to make him consider it an option.
Re: After the Show - Backstage
And with that in mind, Karla answered the only way she could. "Do I have any choice?"
Re: After the Show - Backstage
And at that, Angelface just smiled, a cruel, predatory smile.
"Of course not."

Re: After the Show - Backstage
"Inform her yourself that she's free to go, if you want. I'll arrange with Rita to have her contract destroyed as soon as the marriage is finalized. In the meantime, you'll have to settle for my word."
And if there was one thing Angelface prided himself on, it was the lengths he went to in order to obey his word to the letter, if not the spirit.
