The Magic Box, Sunday, July 13

It was Sunday evening. Maybe in other, better cities people were waking up from the naps they took to sleep off Grandma's pot roast dinner after church. Maybe they were riding bikes under streetlights or swinging on suburban porch swings, counting fireflies.

But this was Fandom, and Fandom Sundays were a lot like any other day. Which meant the magic had to keep coming. Anders had an opening shift, which meant he had to sweep up the cigarette butts and wipe the sticky rings of dried hooch off the tables, and check to make sure all the props and sheet music were in order for the night. It was dumb, and dull, and more than a little gross, but it kept him on the owners' good sides and that was where he liked to be.

He fretted as he went through the routine of busywork. The kid, Elsa -- the chatter backstage was that she was up for a couple special jobs. She was way too young for anything like that, but Anders wasn't the type to stick his neck out, not when it would just give somebody like Angelface a perfect chance to slit his throat. Besides, Karla wasn't dumb. If anybody could going to keep Elsa pure, Karla could.

Once the club was in tip-top shape for the night, Anders went backstage to get into costume, chat with the girls, and wait for the show to begin.

"So I'm not the only one who's shy," Eleanor said, giving Elsa a knowing smile. "But I think you could do it. There'd be fewer people watching on a movie set than on stage here, and you do just fine."

"You suppose so?" Elsa was blushing again. Goodness, when had she started blushing this much? "I would see that camera, I think, and just imagine how many people are on the other side..."

Ignoring the fact that cameras didn't exactly work that way, and all.

"Try pretending it's not there," she suggested. "What do you do on stage, when you see all those faces? I've never tried being on stage before."

Oh, Eleanor. You had just given Elsa the mother of all reasons to blush furiously, forever, without end, amen.

"I'm not usually looking at all of the faces," she explained, gently.

She tended to look out for one face in particular.

And now it was Eleanor blushing, clear to her roots, maybe all the way to her soul.

"It looks like me," she blurted out, before she could stop herself. "You p-probably get that a lot, from fans, but no matter where I sit, it looks ... looks like you're looking right at me."

She had her eyes squeezed tight now. Too late to turn back.

"So I pretend that -- that you're singing just for me. That there's nobody else in the club, or even the whole world, just you, up there on stage, and me, watching."

If it had been anybody but Eleanor saying that, Elsa probably would have started backing away and calling for Leon to come get the creepy person out of her dressing room.

But since it was exactly the person she'd been singing to, she did nothing of the sort. She simply smiled and reached for one of Eleanor's hands.

"Right at you," she agreed, gently. "And nobody else."

Eleanor couldn't believe this was real. That the fingers closing over hers were really Elsa's. She hadn't called her a freak, or thrown her out of the dressing room. She ... might even ...

"You're so beautiful, up there," she said, softly, twining her fingers through Elsa's almost nervously. "Like something out of a dream."

This was something out of a dream, this flutter of a heartbeat going between them.

Elsa honestly had no idea how to respond to that. The first person besides her own sister to call her beautiful without first sizing her up like a piece of meat, and it was exactly the person she had hoped it might be. She bit her lip and shook her head a little.

"Seeing you in the audience makes that easier," she replied. "Every night you're there, I feel... grounded. Safe. It's silly, I know. We haven't really spoken before this."

"I felt it, too," Eleanor said, impulsively. "That ... nothing could be too bad, so long as I could come to the club and see you sing. Like you were the sun, shining up there in the sky."

She blushed, ducking her head again. "That's why I kept coming back, night after night. I couldn't ... stay away."

And why she had finally made it back here.

Elsa was blushing as well, for what it was worth, looking down at their hands and smiling.

"This feels a bit surreal, doesn't it," she murmured. "Like something from a dream that finally comes true, though you never dared to dream it would."

"It doesn't seem real," Eleanor agreed with a laugh. "I didn't even dream about anything like this. I was too ..."

Scared, maybe. Afraid, not least to admit it to herself. She squeezed Elsa's hand, feeling like it was suddenly a lifeline.

"I keep waiting to wake up," she said. "Or have someone come in and throw me out, or have you jerk your hand back."

"I certainly won't be doing that last one," Elsa insisted, giving Eleanor's hand a little squeeze. "I... can't promise the other ones won't, though, I'd have to be pretty upset, if I were to find out I was simply a figment of your imagination this entire time."

"You seem pretty real to me," Eleanor said softly. "I'm not dreaming your hand, am I?"

It was so soft and slim in her own. She was looking down at it again as if it was some wonder, some miracle, some unknown magic seeping into this world from another place.

But there it was, Elsa's hand in hers. They were sitting here on the floor and ... holding hands. It sounded bizarrely innocent and yet so intimate all at once.

"So that just leaves someone else throwing me out," she said. "Maybe I should have shut the door."

That sounded shocking, as it left her lips.

Almost as shocking, perhaps, as the words that fell from Elsa's lips next?

"We could. We could shut the door. Lock it from the inside. Get to know one another, besides glances stolen from across a crowded room... I have the rest of the night off..."

What Eleanor really couldn't believe was that she was standing up, slowly, and pulling her hand away from Elsa's. There was a pang at the absence, but it was only temporary, she reassured herself.

And then she approached the door, her stomach twisting itself around like mad, and shut it, firmly clicking the lock into place.

She didn't know how she got the courage to turn and face Elsa again. It was like something otherworldly was compelling her.

Elsa was on her feet by the time Eleanor turned around again, and only a few steps away. There was something making it difficult to breathe, then, as she stepped forward, reaching once again for Eleanor's hand.

"Would it be too terribly forward," she murmured, "to stand a little closer?"

Such daring.

Eleanor let her fingers slide through Elsa's, and took another step forward herself.

"I hope not," she said, in a very low voice. "Or maybe I just ... don't care about what's forward, any more."

Being near Elsa made those things seem trivial.
