Turtle & Canary; Sunday [08/26].
Okay. This was it. Today was going to be Summer first day official working at the shop mostly by herself, but it was cool. She had this. How much harder could it be without Amaya and with Apu close at hand, anyway? Not like there's be a huge surge of customers or anything. Something could possibly break down, but she could just get Amaya to come in and fix it. It would all be fine, it would all be great, and she'd spent all morning getting things ready for a little flash Back-to-School sale.
She just hoped no one would be looking for glitter, because she kind of used most of it to make the signs that now cluttered the front window.

Carter entered the store and stopped, blinking, at the glitter, but also at the size of the place.
It was a far cry from Jeff's general store, that was certain.
no subject
"Welcome to Turtle & Canary!" she called out from behind the counter, trying her best not to bounce too much. Would it ever cease to be exciting for her when someone walked through that door? Yeah, probably. No, definitely, possibly by the end of the week, but every customer was a new thrill for her still.
May she cherish while it lasted.
"Just lemme know if you need help finding anything."
no subject
"Thank you," he said sincerely. "It's my first time here, so could I get you to point me in the direction of the baking supplies?"
no subject
Handwavey. Are you with the latest batch of island arrivals, or have you just not had a chance to make it in until today?"no subject
"Part of the newest arrivals," he admitted. "Just arrived yesterday to discover I'm meant to teach this semester."
The idea that a moose had decided he was meant to teach still left Carter with mixed feelings.
"I'm Pastor Carter," he added. "At your service, miss."
no subject
Well, balls.
"Is that a name, or a title? And I'm Summer. Summer Smith, nice to meet you. I actually used to go to school up there."
A whole three months ago!
"Come on," she quirked her head toward the aisles and moved around from behind the counter, "I'll show you where to find the baking stuff."
no subject
He had not yet figured out which lady was being referred to in the church's name, but as he served a goddess, it didn't bother him.
"Did you enjoy your time at the school?"
no subject
"Oh, I loved it," Summer gushed, and it radiated with just pure, genuine sincerity and the little butterflies in her belly for finally having returned. "So much so that I came back! Oh, this place is great. Not perfect, of course. Not by a long shot, but it sure beats the pants off of anywhere I've ever been."
She paused enough to offer another smile. "What kind of place are you coming from, Pastor?"
no subject
He laughed softly.
"I was under the impression that this was also a small town, but it is much, much larger than Mineral Town is. We did not even have a proper school there, the children were taught by their families."
no subject
Small town pastor in Fandom?
Oh, this was gonna be good.
"But everyone here's pretty nice and helpful, for the most part," she continued. "Case in point...Ta-dah!"
This brought them easily to the baking aisle, and so Summer spread her arms to display the varied selection of such goods that they offered. "And if you don't see what you need here, we can usually special order it. What are you making, if you don't mind me asking?"
no subject
Carter looked at selection of goods, feeling quite certain that they had more than anything he could think of to ask for.
no subject
Well, as far as his classes went, Pastor Carter here was going to do great if he kept things like that up! At least until the first big, stupid, mildly traumatizing thing...
"That's a good question. I mean, you can't go wrong with the good old standard of chocolate chip. I like peanut butter myself, but you have to be careful with that, you never know who might have an allergy. You could mix it up a little with some M&M's or something, but definitely not oatmeal raisin. Oh! I got it! Get this: sugar cookies, with different colors and flavors for icing, and on that icing? Edible glitter. Fandom kids love glitter."
...if you couldn't tell by the signs.
no subject
"What's wrong with oatmeal raisin cookies?" He wondered. Carter liked those just fine. "And... edible glitter?"
That was a thing?
no subject
"Oh, oatmeal raisin is the worst," Summer said. "They totally look like chocolate chip if you're not paying attention, and so you get your hopes up, and then you take a bite, and it's such a potent moment of disappointment and betrayal. I guess they're not bad if you know they're oatmeal raisin, but if you don't? Pffft. Good luck, man.
"And edible glitter," she added without barely a beat, "is exactly what it sounds like. Glitter that you can eat. Just don't get it mixed up with the regular glitter, or you're gonna have a bad time."
no subject
"All right," Carter said, smiling. "I shall be guided by you in this. The edible glitter would be found in this aisle, correct? While anything outside of here would best not be bought for cookies?"
no subject
She had used...so...so much.
"Hey, what's the class you're teaching, anyway? I'm teaching something, too, but not at the school. My class'll be at the community center."
no subject
He smiled at Summer. "You're very industrious," he noted. "What are you teaching?"
no subject
"That sounds...useful!" said Summer, thinking she would totally be all about that second part, but she'd like to believe she didn't really need the first. "And I'm going to be teaching Early 21st Century Social Media for Old Farts, Luddites, and the Time-Displaced." She flashed a big grin. "And if that sounded like just a big old word salad of pure gibberish, then my class is probably right up your alley!"
no subject
"Guilty," he admitted. "Though I am neither old nor time-displaced, as far as I'm aware."
Luddite it was, then?
