The Park on Thursday

It was Thursday and it was Valentine's Day and since she had blown off class on Monday she was blowing off her office hours as well. She'd asked some of the sword boys to come to the park and show off for her and at least two had definitely agreed and one more might show his ass up if he got his lazy bum out of bed in time. She'd banged on a few doors on Floor Four and loudly announced where she was going and why as an invitation of sorts.

She'd hit up Kanan's warehouse and borrowed an armful of his practice swords both metal and bamboo by stuffing them into a duffel bag. For a value of 'borrowed' that meant she hadn't asked but she totally meant to return them before he noticed they were gone. Eh. He was going to be busy today anyway. An item in his warehouse made her snicker quite a bit but she wasn't mean enough to spoil that surprise so she left it alone.

A stop by the Perk to collect a party-sized container of coffee and some cups saw her with enough caffeine to share and then she was off to the park. The practice swords were set out. She parked her ass on a bench with her first coffee of the day and waited. Relaxing back against the bench and enjoying the weather and sunshine.

It was going to be a great day. She could just tell.

[Open! If you think you heard her this morning you definitely did and also open to anyone heading by or through the park. Sword boys gonna sword for her amusement and education.]

"So, typical Thursday then," Liam said with a snicker.

Well, yes.

"Typical every day, more like," Beau scoffed, and flipped her staff, catching it behind her back with her other hand. "Want to see if I remember what we went over last week?"
firstofitskind: (amused)

"Sure," Liam agreed, picking up the sabre he'd shown Jack earlier and nodding towards the pile of practice swords.

"Oh, it's on," Beau declared as she darted over to the pile and started rummaging through it to find something as similar to the sabre as she could -- which, as it turned out, was not that similar, since what she ended up with was closer to an epee.

Spoiler alert: she did not remember as much from the previous week's lesson as she thought she did.

"Wrong sword," Liam informed her cheerfully. "Close, though."

Beau glanced from the epee to Liam's saber and back, then sighed. "Close enough, right? It's got like a hilt and a pointy end, so like . . . it's fine, right?"

Liam shook his head. "What you've got there, the epee, is built for thrusting," not dirty. "This," he indicated the saber, tilted it to show the flat edge, "is meant for slashing. Different forms, different functions."

And Beau, maybe predictably, started laughing like a frat boy. "I mean, I kinda think I'm good either way, but."

Beauregard. No. Stop it.

"Not, but the other way is more fun, so fine. Lemme go switch this out."

She went back to the pile and dug around until she found something much closer to the saber. It took her a while, but she came back brandishing one. "Okay! Since apparently yeah, it always ends up with hitting each other, right?"

"If you really want to strip it down to basics, yeah," Liam said.

These being practice swords, at least neither of them was likely to get actually cut, even if a hit connected.

"There's kind of a lot of room for innuendo in fencing, huh?" Beau gave the practice saber a couple of twirls to test the balance, then settled into an approximation of a guard position. "I guess that makes sense."
firstofitskind: (excuse me?)

[personal profile] firstofitskind 2019-02-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course you'd pick up on that," Liam said with a snort, moving in to attack.

Beau was quick enough to parry, although not practiced enough to be able to turn it into an effective counter. Still, she smirked at him over the blades.

"Naturally. Gotta appreciate the subtler nuances of language, you know?"

For your intended purposes of innuendo, Beauregard, subtlety was nowhere near in the picture.
