It was that time of year, again. One of Sparkle's favourite times of year, in fact.

The time of year when the summer stock shipments (not that many had survived the summer anyway) started to slow down, and the autumn stock started to roll in. Cute hats, gloves, scarves. Sweaters! Look at these adorable sweaters! It wasn't even September yet. God know this week was meant to continue to be hotter than the devil's asscrack. But fall gear?

Fall gear!

Clearly, Sparkle had to start picking through it to dress up the mannequins anyway.

And maybe start browsing the internet for cuddly winter onesies, too. Oh, shit, that one was a sea otter! Clearly he had to order in like five.

So. That was Sparkle's day, set.

"Oh, dang! That's a fancypants card you've got there," Sparkle laughed, leaning in for a good study of said card. "So what is it that Hunters do?"

Because he had serious doubts that she was out there shooting bucks.

"We do whatever we want!" she said, beaming. "Our jobs are to wander the world and find things! We get to travel all over and help people and places and solve puzzles that other people have never, ever seen!"

Alluka laughed, a little ruefully.

"At least, when we're fully trained, we'll be able to do all of that. Ringo and I are still learning, so we've got a mentor right now and we tend to do what she wants us to do instead of haring off on our own!"

"Hey, that's not too bad, though. A mentor, huh? That'll get you right into the swing of things! She'll teach you all the best finding-stuff tricks." A tiny smirk. "But I bet it's hard to stay put when there's so much world out there, huh?"

Toronto kid Sparkle stuck on Fandom Island kinda knew the feeling.

"She's also teaching us how to use nen," she said happily, tucking her card away safely again since it was literally one-of-a-kind and non-replaceable if she lost it. "That's what they call powers in my world! It's pretty hard, but also really neat!"

And Alluka had never had a power of her own, just Nanika, which made it something exciting all by itself.

"But, yeah, most of my world is restricted travel--it's too dangerous for civilians! More than 90% of it is restricted and more than 70% of that is banned entirely if you're not a Hunter! That was why Ringo and I wanted to become Hunters in the first place, because we'd seen all the things that just anyone could see!"

Awww, man. Did everyone out there have some way to get powers? Sparkle gave a soft laugh to cover a small pang of jealousy.

"Well, dang, then you really are going to see it all, huh? You'll have to send pictures, you know? Like Milady did?"

But with less cheesy Photoshop.

Well, if Sparkle wanted to survive an exam that killed off a ton of its examinees every year, then he, too, could have the chance to learn how to use powers!

"Yes!" She beamed. "Except, maybe, the Dark Continent. Not even Hunters have ever come back from there alive."

... Nah, Sparkle would just keep on hoping for a radioactive spider bite.

"That... sounds pretty extreme," he admitted, blinking. "Do people know what makes it so dangerous? Or is that part of what makes it so dark?"

Lazy!

"We don't even know the shape of the continent," Alluka said, hopping over to the counter to sit on it. "That's why it's called the Dark Continent. People can't even fly over it to get an idea of the shape of it. Only two people have ever come back alive from there and they were both insane after it."

"That maybe does not sound like a fun and fabulous vacation destination," Sparkle admitted, blinking. "Wild."

"But imagine just being the first people to ever explore it and come back!" Alluka said, kicking her legs a little in thought. "Getting to see something that no one else has ever set eyes on and lived to tell the tale!"

Well... if anybody could do it, it was probably Nanika.

"That part would be pretty awesome," Sparkle had to admit. "But what if it's just full of, like... I don't know. Icky things. Spiders."

It was probably not spiders.

"I don't like spiders," Alluka admitted, making a face at the thought. "But some of the things they can make are pretty beautiful? So it might be worth seeing...."

But, still, probably not spiders.

"Hmmm," Sparkle hummed. "Well, then maybe. Someday. After you have a whole lot more experience with hunting, right? Maybe when you've run out of world to see otherwise."

Please let there be a lot of world.

"Yeah! No time soon, though, because there's still so much to see and do!" And, really, the Dark Continent wasn't that high on her list of things to do when she hadn't even climbed the world's tallest tree yet. "And, and if Ringo and I get bored in my world, there's so many other worlds to see too!"

"That's true," Sparkle laughed. "A whole multiverse! Probably like a whole universe where all the food is bubblegum or candy or something. And I know you'd have fun in that one with the magical leaves that give you flying raccoon onesies."

Sparkle's favourite 'we might die here' stop of the summer, right there.

Alluka blinked.

"Is, is that a real world?"

"I still have my onesie," Sparkle stage-whispered. "But it doesn't fly anymore."

It was still SO GREAT.

"I want to visit that world," she said eagerly. "Do, do you think it would fly if you went back to that world?"

"Maybe it would! Just so long as none of the weird flying turtles bite me in the butt. I don't want it to disappear."

A beat.

"That place was so weird, Alluka."

She giggled.

"But it sounds like it was so much fun!" she said. "Do you know what it was called or how to find it again?"

"You know, I don't know offhand, but I bet they'd know over at Portalocity," Sparkle mused. "We could head there and ask, sometime?"

"If, if that's okay with you, we should do that!" she said eagerly. "I want to see this world that you've seen!"

"We can totally do that," Sparkle laughed, nodding. "Not right this moment, I'm working, but maybe we can set aside a few days sometime and make a trip of it?"

"I'd love that!"

It would be so good! So fun!

So--oh!

"Can, can I invite Ringo along too, though? She'd like it, I know she would!"

"I don't see why not," Sparkle replied, grinning faintly. "You can bring whichever friends you want, if you think they'd like it. It can be a little dangerous, but that's nothing a pair of Hunters can't handle."

Especially since even Sparkle could.
