Community Center Class: Modern Earth Entertainment, Monday evening

"Hi." Peter looked around to see any new faces. "If you haven't been here before, I'm Peter Octavian, and this is a class where we watch modern Earth entertainment as a way of catching up with what the locals are talking about and how the culture might work. Not always by strict example. Anyway, this week I thought we'd watch something about families. Instead of a movie, it'll be the first few episodes of a show that was really popular a few decades back. I don't remember seeing it myself, so this'll be an experience for all of us."

He pushed play.

"Oh, and there's drinks, chips, and popcorn - please help yourselves!"

Eat the foods, drink the drinks, chat amongst yourselves.

Fjord shrugged and grabbed a drink for himself, considered the snacks, shook his head at the popcorn, and took some potato chips instead.

So, more or less the usual.

Breq hadn't seen her former teacher since the class ended.

"Do you usually go to these classes?" she asked

[I checked. Breq was in Fjord's class.]

[Woo! And now we know!]

"When I remember they exist," Fjord confirmed, nodding her way. "Evenin', Breq. I don't think I've seen you around here before. But then, I've been bad at keepin' my attendance up lately."

In fairness, he'd been a snake for a while there.

"I've just been here once or twice," she said. "I've been busy with the music store. I'm the new owner."

She took a sip from her drink.

"Are you still teaching?"

"Hey, congrats on the business," Fjord offered, and even meant it. "And nah, I'm pretty sure I'm through with teaching for a while. All the topics I know my way around are spoken for these days anyway."

"You're working in Caritas now, aren't you?"

She listened to radio. She was not keeping an eye on Seivarden so that she didn't get herself killed.

"Friday nights," Fjord confirmed. "And I spend Thursdays at the forge, learnin' how to make swords under Amaya."

Even if last week had been safe, there was the whole thing with those roses now, and so Amaya was proud to say that her snack-gathering technique was getting increasingly more efficient.

Seivarden held out her private bowl to Amaya, offering her some popcorn.

"How was your weekend?"

Oooh, Amaya got to dig out of the private bowl. She grinned, nodding her thanks as she went in for a handful. This was good, too, because if she was talking to one person, it might make it a bit more challenging for some other person to try talking to her, too, if said other person happened to show up.

"Quiet," she answered with a snort, "and I'll take it. How about yours? Don't imagine you had any visitors?"

That's what happened when you were a glove-wearing person and a friend.

"No visitors." Seivarden looked wistful for a brief moment, but then smiled, a little forced. "I suppose I should be glad that my aunt her client didn't show up," she joked, then took a sip from her drink.

Amaya was sure it would have been a good joke if she knew anything about Seivarden's aunt and her client, but, hey, at least she'd been watching enough Radchaai entertainments these days to know what a client was, even with all the fast-forwarding.

"Thank goodness for small favors, then, right?" she offered. "Anything exciting in store for the rest of your week?"

"Not that I know of," Seivarden said. "You? Finished that sword yet?"

That was last week, Seivarden.

And she'd been practically finished with it back then, too.

"Finished, polished, and practically sold already," she said with a laugh. "Not quite sure what I'll work on this week, I haven't got any pressing projects. Brought a few things to work on in my office up at the school while waiting for any of my students' guests, but I didn't get many, so even those've been pretty well worked by now. So who knows? Maybe tonight's film will provide a spark of something. It's always exciting when they do."

Seivarden grabbed a bowl of popcorn for herself and a drink, then took a seat, glancing around to see who was there.

Breq picked up a drink and a handful of chips, mostly to blend in. She never glanced in Seivarden's direction of course, as she had no reason to, really, but looked around to see if anyone she knew had shown up.

Welcome to the 70s.

Hell, sure, he could settle on in and watch... whatever this was.

Somewhere around the time the dog started chasing the cat in the first episode, he was already wearing a faintly glazed-over expression.

By the time people were writing 'dear Libby' letters in episode two, he was mostly just looking speculatively toward the door.

He was outright nodding off by the time they got to the episode about the school play.

Family. He just didn't understand it.

Amaya had...a bad feeling about this. Sure, technically speaking, there wasn't a whole lot of mushy stuff and besides the incredibly annoying theme song, there wasn't much singing to worry about, either. So it should pass her typical test for entertainment, right?

But there was none of the stuff that she liked either. She just kept waiting (and realizing it was a foolish hope, but a girl had to have dreams) for something to finally explode or for maybe a problem to be solved with an all-out fist fight, but she was going to be left feeling tragically disappointed.

Especially when she was convinced that a well-timed explosion would have improved things significantly at various points throughout each of the episodes.

Seivarden knew better by now than complain about Earth families being strange, and she didn't have much to comment on the fashion, so she just sat there watching, eating popcorn and looking slightly bored.

He's here! Don't ask him about his 70s wardrobe.

IDEK. It seemed like the thing to do.
