That One Spot in the Preserve, Monday Evening
As the sun began to set, all the children who'd been called here for the weekend would begin to feel it- the call back home.
The pull was gentle at first, gradually increasing until it couldn't be ignored. Yes, it was fun to see this little glimpse of who their parents were (or might have been) once upon a time, but they had families waiting for them at the other end who were just as anxious to get them back.
Time to go home, the portal sang out to them. Time to go home.
[ooc: for all your goodbye-ing needs! sorry for the lateness.]

I love you, my daughter.

"I hope we'll see you next year, my love. With red hair and plenty of stories about your new friends."

And so she began to walk back to the portal.

She was joking.
Ish.

He didn't watch Evie go all the way; he tugged Kathy into a hug.

Especially as the random, one-off children stopped showing up and only those children who seemed possible remained.

It did.
It was.
Getting harder.

Which was good and right and just but damn did Kathy's heart ache anyway.
"You do?" she asked, glad to have Dante's words to focus on rather than the nothing of the portal.

He gave a little half-shrug, as much as he could considering how they were clutched together. "Maybe the ones who are most meant to be keep showin' up to tell us something."

She would miss Carys if she ever stopped showing up, but most of the others had just been small blips on her heart. She worried over Zeke, but that was different.

Mostly.
(Though whether it was that she mostly knew or that it was mostly not her fault was up for debate but the smart money was on 'both'.)
"Yeah," she said. "I would have liked to get to know her a bit better. I think I was close to winning her over."
Not really.

She hugged him again and there, without the full weight of her eyes on him asked, "How are you feeling?"

"Let's go home," she said again. "Curl up on the couch with some pizza and a dumb cooking show."

The ache would pass. It always did. But until then, she was just going to hold onto what she had with both hands.
