Midsummer Festival - The Beach, Saturday Evening

Sure it was a week late. And sure it wasn't even a traditional Midsummer festival because there weren't any games or people selling fried foods or screaming eyeballs in the sky.

But Magnus was pretty darn proud of what had been tossed together for a fun costume party on the beach.

With a big, mildly terrifying wicker bear waiting to be set on fire because something something Midsommar. He wasn't sure of the details because scary movies weren't his jam.

Either way, it would be good, clean fun!

"Maybe a little of both," Duke said with a smirk. "Pretty sure I'm going to get stiffed on the bill, so might as well make 'em work for it, right?"

"Diabolical," Lucifer said approvingly, "Though you could have just left him hanging entirely."

Duke shook his head. "That would just be rude. I'll have you know that crab is delicious. It's just . . . hard to get at."

Lucifer made an amused noise.

"This party made Seivarden bellow 'we should have our own beach party'," he confided, "At which point, true to form, she informed me I'd be organising the beach party, just tell her if I needed any help, and then continued on to be no help whatsoever."

Beat.

"So now I'm looking for a caterer. Paid. For food that won't take two hours and a chisel."

"Well then, I just might be available. I'm guessing no finger food, since it's supposedly Seivarden's party and all."

"No finger food," Lucifer said, "And I'm trusting you to prove you're as good at sea food you as you keep pointedly telling me you are."

"I am," Duke said. "You have a preference? Because if you're looking for swordfish, that might take me a bit of time to source properly."

"You have two weeks," Lucifer said, grinning. "Surprise me."

"Two weeks. And how much are you paying me?"

Lucifer had too much money and only a limited understanding of sensible hourly rates, which was why the figure he mentioned was exorbitantly high.

If anyone pointed out it could be lower, he really wouldn't have cared.

Duke was absolutely not going to point out that it could be lower.

"I guess I could do something decent for that much," he said instead. "I'll see what's available."

"Good," Lucifer said cheerfully. "Thank you."

"De nada," Duke said. "So I hear you and Octavia had a little get together today."

He'd gotten her bag all set up for her and everything.

"Yes, well, next time you might want to handle the sunscreen as well," Lucifer said breezily.

Duke grimaced. "I didn't want to make her feel like it was too big a deal," he said. "So I just kind of tossed it in with the towel."

"I have never seen anyone struggle that much to put some lotion on, and trust me, I've seen my fair share," Lucifer said frankly. "Also, I'm taking her out shopping, she needs a bathing suit."

"She does," Duke agreed. "I was kinda . . . working my way up to that point. She never liked shopping."

Though her whole perspective on the mainland had shifted, so maybe she was more open to shopping, too.

"Well. Thanks, I guess."

"She needs more clothes and she was open to it," Lucifer said, as casual in tone as he could possibly make himself go. "You don't have to do everything alone here."

“Of course not,” Duke said, like he wasn’t totally kicking himself for not being able to do everything for Octavia on his own. “So I take it she didn’t storm off on you this time.”

"I'm not going to give you a play-by-play of beach day," Lucifer informed him. ~~Because the mun had no idea yet.~~ "She needs to get out into the sun more, she looks like a bloody ghost."

"She lived underground for six years and then went to war," Duke said. "Not really a lot of chances to go tanning before now."

"Which is why I'm hoping she'll do it more often," Lucifer said. "Your swimming thing was clever."

“Thanks.” Duke shrugged. “Wasn’t trying to be. Just something that always helps me, and that we’d been talking about doing, you know, before.”

Before Fandom had decided their lives needed more drama in them and fucked them both over.

"Maybe I should stop calling you a pirate and start calling you a mermaid," Lucifer said, bringing up his beer for a swig.

His own party was definitely going to have a better liquor selection.

Duke snorted. “You wouldn’t be the first one to do it. You know you can enjoy the water and not be a cartoon character, right?”
