Atlas Health and Fitness Center, Tuesday Morning

Tuesday morning found Marc at the local gym pretty much when it opened. He and Nell had arranged to meet there in the section dedicated to boxing and, by extension, any other form of martial arts. It was as good a place as any to start lessons in self-defense.

Marc took his time getting the lay of the land as far as equipment and options went while he waited for Nell to join him.

"Not much," Marc admitted. Hey, Nell was sharp. No point lying when she was the one introducing the topic of the unfairness in the first place. He was still trying to get a feel for Nell's world though, so he asked, "They were all human?"

She stopped dead and turned to look at him in horror. "In the church? They wouldn't allow any demon-spawn in there! That's why they got me tested, 'cause some was saying as how I might be and they should burn me at the stake."

Nell waved a hand at him quickly, "Not that I hold with that sort of thing. If you're mindin' your own business and not hurtin' people I dion't care what you are."

"There's two vampires working bars in this town," Marc pointed out. "Like I f - freaking know if they couldn't be priests or whatever in that church."

Again, nice save on the swearing.

"Really?" Nell considered that. "I never go in bars, so I guess I wouldn't know."

She tipped her head, "And I wouldn't expect you'un to know. I was just sorta caught up in the moment, hitting things, and it shocked me."

"It's okay," Marc said. "Mainly I'm trying to figure how often you come across people with powers. Fighting with powers is different than without."

"Never met anyone else with powers," Nell said. That would come later. "Well, back home, I mean. Here there are lots of them."

"Dime a dozen," Marc agreed. "It's not unusual for me back home but it's not like I bump into them every day. Or ever. I mean on the job yeah but otherwise no."

"You have people with super powers back home, too?" Nell asked. "Like vampires and witches?"

"No vampires," Marc said, ~~since Blade hasn't come out yet~~ "Don't know about witches. But yeah. People with flight, strength, flashy stuff."

And thus did Marc summarize the entirety of the Avengers.

"Strange, huh?" Nell said. "That even those of us who seem to come from the same world end up not."

"I gave up on judging anything strange a long time ago," Marc said. "It's kind of nice. The island's as crazy as I am."

Nell stopped again and turned to face him, waiting till she has his full attention. "You'un is not crazy," she said gently. "You'un has had a hard life and made it through as best you can. Life is just crazy all on its ownself."

If Steven were there he'd be in full agreement with Nell. But it was Marc so he said, "Could be both."

She just smiled sweetly at him. "Hmmph."

Then she turned back to the bag.

She wasn't going to argue with you, Marc, but she wasn't going to agree with you either.
