Midnight Manor Boarding House Kitchen, Tuesday Afternoon
Last week, Illyana had asked if Watts would be willing to teach her to make cupcakes, and he was all too happy to oblige.
She'd expressed an interest in chocolate, so Watts had made sure to gather the supplies necessary for chocolate cupcakes- both non-vegan and vegan, as while he was fairly certain she'd go for the former, he felt the need to be prepared. If they didn't end up using the vegan recipe and ingredients, then he'd take them home and just make more cupcakes.
This preparedness also extended to icing for the cupcakes; had both the supplies to make their own, as well as cans of pre-made icing that he'd picked up from the store.
Now all he needed was the young lady in question and they could get started.
[ooc: expecting one but can be open, sure.]

Yes, she had absolutely just teleported downstairs, rather than risk tripping down the steps.
"Careful, hot," she said, setting it down on a counter. "Proper tea, Russian style, to fuel my lesson."

Illyana glanced around at the supplies, then back over to Watts. "...I do not even know where to start."

...sorry, Watts, but Illyana wasn't joking when she said she knew nothing about cooking.

"Maybe we start with not-vegan, and then do the vegan batch separate, so they're not my first experiment."
Illyana would eat her own cupcakes no matter how terrible they were, but she wasn't going to subject Watts to her first round of experiments.

“Second question, then: would you also like to make your own icing to top the cupcakes, or shall we use a pre-packaged option?” he held up the tin of icing.

"Did everyone have fun with the eclipse yesterday? I had to run back to New York after class for magic-stuff."
The science of eclipses? Awesome. The magical creatures that tried crossing between worlds while magical barriers were thin? NOT FUN.

“It was a fascinating phenomena,” Watts said. “Steven loved it,” he added, the fondness for his beau’s enthusiasm clear in his tone.

"Mutants...we tend to be more durable than humans. We still bruise, and cut, and get concussed, but it takes more. A side-effect of our bodies needing to be able to handle our powers, I guess. A regular body would tear itself apart." Illyana grinned at him. "I've endured worse, though trying to wash the plant bits out of my hair sucked."
They were making cupcakes. Telling him 'I came of age in a place where we cut each other for fun' was not conducive to the fun that Illyana was hoping to have.

"As I am already slightly mad, I opt for the humor in it all, yes?" She tapped the piece of paper. "I make jokes, I listen to music, I learn how to make cupcakes, and it grounds me with real people, in a reality where things aren't terrible behind every corner"

"We are so lucky to have figured out cupcakes." She looked at the recipe again. "Okay, we preheat oven, and then mix the dry parts, yes?"

"Right, sugar," she repeated, reaching for the bag after she had selected the right size.
It was probably pretty clear her instinct was just to grab a scoop and throw it in, but she followed Watt's motions, leveling it off properly first before dumping it in.
"Only one cup? I would think something sweet would have more."
no subject
"It is somewhat surprising how little sugar is needed in order to make something sweet," Watts agreed, dumping in the rest of the flour. "Cocoa next, and that's one-third of a cup." Since she'd examined the measuring cups already, he figured she could locate the correct one.

Yana added the cocoa to the mix, as directed, then grabbed her frosting spoon and dug it into the cocoa powder container before popping it in her mouth.
Beat.
"I've had worse," she said thoughtfully, wrinkling her nose, "--but it's still not pleasant."

Had he done similar the first time he’d encountered powdered cocoa? Perhaps.

Chocolate was chocolate.
"Now...next up..." she said, checking the recipe again. "Baking soda is a dry thing? Weird. I think of anything soda as like the beverage, with the bubbles."

The voice of experience there, Illyana.

"...wait, teaspoons and tablespoons are different? Why?"

“These two are the tablespoons,” he said, indicating the tablespoon and half-tablespoon measure. “The larger ones- you’ll see it abbreviated in the recipe with ‘Tbsp’. The others,” he pointed to the remaining four spoons, “are the teaspoon as well as the half, quarter, and eighth. Those are abbreviated with ‘tsp’. The easiest way to tell at a glance is that tablespoon is bigger, and thus uses a capital T.”
