Midnight Manor Rooftop, Tuesday Morning
A while back, Marc had asked Cal to get some speakers set up for the outdoor areas of the manor, and Cal had agreed because it sounded easy.
It had, in fact, turned out to be harder than expected, but Cal was nothing if not stubbornly perseverant.
Between things he'd foraged from the junkyard and the magic of Amazon, Cal had put together four speakers, two for the roof and two for outside the first floor. (If the building grew more floors, well, he'd figure out what to do when the time came.) He had planned on getting things set up over the weekend but... nope, he wasn't going to dwell on what he'd spent his weekend doing instead, and was just going to focus on getting things finished now. Two of the speakers were working just fine and playing one of Cal’s playlists with BD-1's help. He was pretty sure the third speaker just needed some of the wires switched, but the last speaker was proving to be ornery.
“If you don't do what you're supposed to do, I'm going to take you completely apart, put the parts in a jar, shake them, and then put you back together again.”
Was threatening inanimate objects the best way to deal with his feelings? Probably not, but it was happening anyway.

And then summoning some hard light stepping stones, made her way to the roof.
"Hey Cal," Kamala said, tilting her head and trying to get a read on his emotional state. "How are you doing?"

NFB from here to protect Cal from Lydia...
Kamala moved over to sit down next to Cal. "I don't think she's angry. Or at least she's not at the angry stage yet. She was devastated yesterday."

"Oh!" she said, startling. "I didn't--uh. Yeah, sorry, I didn't know you were here. Sorry."
Clearly time to pull a Cal Kestis and leave immediately, though she was lacking a note to leave behind.

"No, it's okay, I was just--" Obviously he wasn't going anywhere, he was surrounded by speaker bits, but maybe she'd go along with it. "I was just about to take a break and go, you can stay."
BD-1 perked his head up and ran over to Arden. "He's dumb, please don't go," he said sadly.

"I'm sorry, baby," she said, kneeling down to give BD a hug. "I wish I could understand you."
The future her had, she knew that, but that future her got to have a lot of things that Arden didn't.
The look she shot Cal, however, was lot more complicated - skepticism, hurt, anger, and longing in equal measure. "You might be surprised to learn this," she said softly, "but you don't have to immediately leave wherever I am. You're busy. I can go."

Hey, didn't that girl used to live with you?
Yeah, but my mom didn't like her. Said she gave her the creeps. It's okay, though, I'm getting a new little sister soon. One to keep.

Why were words so hard?! "I didn't want to make things worse than they already were for you."

"Because you're dumb," BD-1 said helpfully from Arden's arms.
"I'm not dumb. I didn't want to make things worse," Cal replied. "But it sounds like I failed."

Or out of it, as the case may be.
"Hey," he said to Cal when he came up out of the door from the private residence staircase. "How's it going?"

The speakers, life in general, there was a vibe.
no subject
Yep, that was Marc, kind and giving.
no subject
Marc might not be double checking like this if he knew the thing messed up was Cal's love life.

It had still thrown Steven off a little but that wasn't something for sharing.
Marc nodded towards the... whatever Cal was doing with the speakers. "This going okay? Watts and Steven wanna do a thing next week."
That was the only reason why he was asking, Cal. Marc had zero vested interest in the outcome of this project otherwise. Nope.
no subject
Because, you know, he'd met Steven and Watts.
