Fourth Dimension, Monday

Medusalith's head hurt this morning. She blamed the 'music' last night, unaware that the pink things were probably more responsible. She didn't particularly care, though, because she'd gotten to spend her birthday with Blackagar, so really, all was positively golden in her view.

The gallery and all of its lovely things is open for your perusal.

Sophie came in a bit late like, really late and smiled when she saw Medusa. "How are things this morning? Any customers as yet?"

"Good morning." Ever since Blackagar's disappearance, Sophie had been quite aware of the Hair. She'd often considered offering Medusa some kind of... holder, or stand for it. A separate chair, perhaps?

"I was wondering if you wanted another lesson in art security today. If you're up for it, that is."

Sophie refrained from watching some of the hair drift off to itself out of the corner of her eye.

"...no reason." She smiled. "Let's start with lasers, then, shall we?"

Sophie motioned her back to the door of the room, dimmed the lights, then armed the system with her remote.

A series of white lights across the floor, three inches apart, became visible; so did a set at knee height and chest height.

"I can't afford a moving laser system-- there's nothing here valuable enough to necessitate it, anyway. But some galleries have them on a cycle."

"No, but if you interrupt them, they'll set off the alarms immediately," Sophie said, cocking her head to the side. "So you see the problem. One needs to get close enough to fool the weight sensors, as I showed you before, but that's difficult when you can't step on the floor."

...or iiiis it?

"Mmm, yes. I have one friend who can manage to move between moving lasers, and who's worked out a way for fooling ones like these-- it's tricky, though. You'd have to reflect them back on themselves somehow." She smiled and held up the remote. "Or fool the remote into turning off." She clicked them again, and they blinked out. "If you were going into a gallery such as this, and you couldn't see the lasers -- some of them are very low -light-- where would you assume they were? Or how would you try to make them visible?"

"Yes, exactly. If you see a larger frame around them, with metal tabs, then those are often the place where the lasers are affixed. Also, entry points. The windows," Sophie nodded to hers. "The door. Cheaper places may only be able to afford to alarm those points. A laser system is an electricity drain." Her smile widened. "And yes. A small canister or spray pump with aerosol would work. They usually show red, if they're the ones that are invisible to the naked eye."

Sophie held her hand in a fist, and then pointed to three or four points on it. "A small globe might have three or four points from which the lasers can connect; they'll circle, usually on a set pattern. Far too difficult to set up randomly, they'd intersect too much and set each other off when they connected." She pointed from one end of the room to another. "So, three would do a sweep, like a camera, then the next three, in a fan pattern-- you'd have to know how to duck between them, or in Parker's case, do flips over them, getting the timing perfect. The Louvre has a system like that near some of the better known pieces of art."

[identity profile] magdaofslovenia.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Which is why you wouldn't want to try to re-direct them," Or so I assume as I make this stuff up out of thin air "but get around them." She smiled serenely. "Our system is practical for our size, of course, but some places can even put them in the air ducts."

Parker hated when they did that.

"Mmm, you find those more in high-end jewelry institutions, diamonds, places where classified materials or dangerous ones are being stored." She cocked her head. "Military, especially. Not really worth it, unless one already had a buyer lined up and a great deal of money on deposit."

She paused.

"Or so I've heard."
