Fixer-Uppers [all day]

Ben had been working quite happily on his datapad for an hour without incident.

Then he accidentally clicked on an ad and ended up in an endless loop of quizzes ("Do You Care Too Much?" "What Kind of Lover Are You?" "Are You With the Right Person?" "The Kinsey Test Made Simple!!1!").

"Go away, go away, go away..." Ben muttered, blushing hard.

Fixer-Uppers was open! And embarrassed.

"I'll get a new one."

"I'll like that one too," Ben decided. "Unless it has kittens on it."

"Should I go on and point out you have perfectly good blankets on your side of the room?"

Ender had no idea why he was following this ridiculous tangent, but it made him smile a little.

"You could," Ben said, smiling back, "but I fail to see how that's relevant."

Ender repressed a very Ben-like urge to glance away (he was lucky; he wasn't prone to a lot of blushing) and the ridiculous little flutter in his stomach-- well, that wasn't repressed, just ignored.

"Logically speaking, whether or not you like my blankets is the thing that isn't relevant," he said, "Since they're not yours."

"They could be if I got back to the room first," Ben laughed.

"But for how long?" Ender wondered.

"Until I could change the lock?" Ben replied.

It'd just be Ben and his droids and Ender's blankets. How normal.

"Ah," Ender said, "The old 'lock myself in until I starve with my newly-acquired possessions' strategy."

"It could use a little bit of tweaking," he admitted, "but the basic premise is sound."

You could see little frowny lines forming on Ender's forehead as he tried to decide whether he should laugh or change the subject to something a little more serious.

Finally, he laughed. He sounded slightly discombobulated by it.

Ben reached out to ruffle Ender's hair. "Look at that," he teased. "You can laugh."

If he seemed entirely too pleased with himself for accomplishing that, well.

"I think that wasn't ever in question," Ender said, dryly, though there were still little amused dimples by his mouth. "The way you avoid making sense is truly astounding."

"It's a gift," Ben said airily.

Ender snorted softly, shaking his head. "Anything else I missed in the four hours since I last saw you?" A beat. "Saying that really makes me feel like we're living in each other's pockets."

"Maybe a little," Ben agreed. "I could send you messages about when I stop for coffee if you absolutely insist upon it?"

"Don't forget all the times you go to the toilet," Ender advised, "or when you pass wind."

Ender could be weird, too. Weirdoes.

Ben burst out laughing. "But I wanted to keep some of the mystery alive," he said.

"Then don't tell me about the breathing," Ender suggested, "Leave a little of it intact."

"Heartbeats, too, I imagine," Ben mused.

"Can you count those?" Ender asked, briefly breaking character.

Ben thought about it. "I might have to set up an automated program to update you."

"No, I mean, through Jedi discipline," he corrected. "A lot of it is self-awareness, I'd imagine."

Well. Of a certain kind, anyway.

"Oh, yeah, I can do that," Ben said. "I can slow my heart rate down, too."

"Interesting," Ender said.

Then, in an attempt to salvage the ridiculous banter: "But don't get me a Ben heart-rate monitor. I have limits."
