Spring Parents' Weekend Brunch | Sunday Morning to Afternoon | The Park
Another successful weekend of avoiding angry and confused parental figures and listening to radio with a broad smile on his face and a tub of popcorn at his side meant Barney was happy to oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park.
Ah, but the morning was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim. With el presidente and the rest of the student council taking care of friends and family, it was up to Barney to make brunch happen. Amazing what an iPhone could do these days, like make tents, chairs, and tables of blue and gold appear all around the park along with tables of hot and cold cuisine perfect for what anyone might expect of brunch. Apparently there was an app for that.
And now for the sitting, chatting, and eating. Today was the day when everyone would say goodbye and flee the island, leaving the land peaceful once more. Barney thought it was a lot like what happened after invasions, just with less blood and goop on the streets.

Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
He looked... old. Ish. But Mitchell was going to try for 'nice with a dash of cool' for the moment.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
There's-totally-a-last-name-here," Zach said, letting go of Kate's hand so he could immediately offer his to Mitchell for a shake, with a smile. "And you are...?""Mitchell," Kate filled in. He wasn't getting quite as wary look as Puck had yesterday – yet.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Seriously, how old was this guy? "How are you finding the island?"
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Kate shot him a quick look, and a single word. "Don't." And Zach relented. "It's quaint," he said.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
But that didn't last long, and he glanced back at Zach. "Quaint is a very good word for it," he said, with a laugh. The man hadn't given him any reason to be an ass just yet, and he was trying to be the one friend on good behaviour here.
Who knew how long that would last. "'Bizarre' is another good word for it. And occasionally 'hostile to outsiders', but don't worry, we've stopped stringing you lot up at the causeway." He discarded his cigarette. "So you're from Kansas as well...?"
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Zach nodded. "Yes. Born and raised, and my business in based in Kansas City as well." He glanced at, gave her a brief smile she didn't really notice. "It's a good place to stay."
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
So sue him, he was going the protective older brother route. And don't think he missed your distraction, Kate.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
"I own the Yogohut chain of restaurants," Zach clarified. "It's the largest of its kind in the KC metro area."
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
And now he was just making small talk. He'd save the Talk for when Kate was back on her own.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
That was when Kate turned more towards them again, and interrupted Zach like she hadn't even been listening. She touched his arm, then glanced at Mitchell. "Um, would you two excuse me for a moment?"
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
All the easier to
threatentalk to Zach, right? Except Kate was getting a hint of puzzled frown. So much talking. If he didn't get distracted by any emergencies, first.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Zach turned towards Mitchell once she was gone. "I... don't know what that was about," he offered.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Mr. Srstofuckhowoldareyou.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
And generally he didn't like paying much attention to the fact that she was, if at all possible. He was dating her, not her age.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
"She is fairly jaded for her age," he agreed, peering idly over his shoulder. "So how about we'll just say we had the 'don't hurt my sort-of little sister or I'll end you' conversation and just skip out on actually having it?"
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Anyway, he frowned again. "I'm sorry, I thought you were her former teacher and... current employer."
And not one of those protective brother types. That was probably Late's fault; after Lynda's misconceptions, she'd been a little more particular about what she said about her friends.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
He wasn't speaking that idly just to make Zach nervous. Really. (He just had a lot of experience in being intimidating in all kinds of ways, including 'on best behaviour')
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
"Well, she's already been working since she was fifteen." Which probably would've been a better argument if that was longer than a whopping two and a half years ago. "But I'm sure she appreciates it. Even if I don't know how much longer she'll be working for you."
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
It was kind of hard not to see a potential Owen in every spineless controlling jackass after what had happened to Annie.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Even if Kate acted a little differently around him (not that he knew that) it wasn't impossible to see she was fairly strongwilled.
"I wouldn't force her into anything."
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
Oh, not just Owen. The other guy, too.
Re: Mingle! [SPW 3]
And right enough, she was weaving her way through the crowd towards them again. To tell the truth, he was a little relieved to see that.
