Event weekends were always a great time for people who loved free food, weren't they? Parents' Weekend might be drawing to a close, but the island had saved its best spread for today, with tables full of sandwiches, soups and salads, and seasonally appropriate desserts -- cinnamon and apples and candy apples, just to name a few.

Come in, drop by, have that last surprise run-in with someone's relative...

The weather remained a little on the grey side, but clearly Fandom had done its best to make up for it. The park was full of lights, with little lanterns sitting everywhere, casting a warm orange sheen over the grass. The hot cider stand was back, and it was joined by an artisinal hot chocolate stand that put entirely too much caramel in the beverages.

Out in the field were some light autumn activities.

It was Parents' Weekend. Show off your pumpkin carving skills to your relatives.

It was nice for an October Friday, wasn't it? The leaves were falling artfully, and there was a slight chill, but it wasn't so cold that it would leave anyone shivering. And if, for some reason, they were, well-- the hot apple cider stand near the edge of the Park would probably help.

There was a merry banner in Fandom's colors floating above the picnic tables, reading--

PARENTS WEEKEND 2024! WELCOME!

-- and a squirrel band was playing interpretations of modern pop songs on very small squirrel instruments under one of the trees.

Welcome, parents and other friends and family.

The weekend was drawing to a close - but not quite yet! There was still a little more time to hang out with your loved ones, or your loved ones' loved ones, or whatever your particular situation may have been.

And on Sunday, the town was providing a space for that in the shape of a brunch. Because everyone loved more free food.

It was a crisp yet none-too-chilly September afternoon in the Park, the weather as always perfectly nice to fit the island's general ideas about what these events would be like.

The theme in the park seemed adorably retro, perhaps best seen in the massive banner that hung above:

The lovely fall weather was still hanging around today, creating the perfect setting for some outdoor activities to facilitate family bonding and give people a distraction from trying to answer awkward questions about exactly what this place was all about.

It was one of those insufferably nice seasonal afternoons, the type Fandom only broke out for major events: the temperature was charmingly brisk, the trees an autumnal red-and-yellow, and birds sang their merry fall songs in the trees - when they weren't tussling with the squirrels.

A glittery banner hung over the entrance to the park, drawing in all newcomers:

Welcome to Parents' Weekend 2022!

Welcome, friends, family, and other hangers-on! We're glad to see you! As far as you know!

By this point, anyone who didn't know how weird this place was before they'd arrived had probably gotten the message, but pretending to be a totally normal school/town/pretty castle island was kind of a thing. So, with the thankfully gorgeous fall weather happening, it was time for basic normal fall activities!

If nothing else, it might be another chance to get some inappropriate flirting in with folks that would make your children and/or friends uncomfortable. Traditions are traditions after all!

It was a nice fall Friday afternoon, and the park was all ready for people to gather to meet their loved ones, as even the extremely glittery banner hanging over the entrance to the park evidenced:

Welcome to Parents' Weekend 2021!

There was a lot of glitter. Not just on the banner, but... generally everywhere. Sorry, the school administration had ordered a surplus of it, and it clearly all needed to go somewhere, and since it was all in very autumnal shades of orange and red and gold, well, this was just the occasion.

Welcome, family and friends and whoever else the townspeople and/or the school happened to invite! Try not to inhale too much glitter.

Thankfully, the weather was cooperating today in that it was both clear and sunny and it felt like fall. Small miracles did happen sometimes.

If you followed the smell of spices and pumpkins, there was an array of food and family-friendly activities for people to partake in, or use as a distraction from any awkwardness that might have sprung up. If you wanted non-family-friendly distractions, well, that's what the bars were for, right?

It was a perfectly lovely, crisp, autumn afternoon in Fandom. The birds were chirping, the leaves were falling in a photogenic way, and the woodchucks and been herded well away from the park because chucking wood at visitors would be...not ideal.

The town was bright, cheerful, and clean thanks to the efforts of Wednesday's assembly, and the glitter was almost in manageable amounts (meaning it hadn't gotten into the moddable snacks yet, but it couldn't last forever)!

The glittery banner hung over the entrance to the park, drawing in all newcomers:

The glittering of the park continued as everything was set up for a nice brunch, so everyone could have one last chance to hang out with their relatives, have a few more awkward introductions, and make people eat some more strange Earth food.

StuCo had been busy since folks had last left the park. What had been a very nice glittery picnic had been transformed into a (glittery) fallstravaganza, full of scarecrows and decorative gourds. Crisp, brightly colored leaves covered the ground, despite the still mostly green ones still clinging to the actual trees. The scent of melted butter and warm spices filled the air. They'd somehow even managed a corn maze, despite the distinct lack of anything resembling a corn field having been in the park before.

There were pumpkins literally everywhere.

The weather was threatening to top 90°F, but StuCo didn't care. It was fall dammit!

Hopefully, everyone in Fandom was ready for their guests, because everything was ready for the guests at the park. The weather was still holding out for the weekend, decently warm with a few clouds here and there in the sky, and the weekend itself was coming to a close. Your illustrious Student Council had gone through the paces of organizing a brunch so that Fandomites could have one more day of school-provided quality time with their visitors, and so three were tables out with all manner of food provided, for folks of all dietary needs.

Don't worry, students. Things that weren't necessarily safe for human consumption had been clearly marked as such.

As one might have suspected, the weather that afternoon was incredibly cooperative and pleasant, just the right balance of nearly everything. Funny how that always seemed to work out. And wasn't that fine weather just a perfect companion for all the decorations and tables set up around the park in anticipation of the weekend's guests, as well as for the impressive spread of food offered for those wanting a bit of a nibble.

There was, of course, glitter, but some might note that it was a bit more tastefully restrained this year.

A bit.

Stretched over the entrance to the park was a large, bold banner, leaving no question as to what all this marvelous preparation was for:

The weather was sunny but not too hot, aka perfect brunch weather. The tables were well stocked with goodies for all sorts of beings. Yes, even those whose diets consisted of things that others might not consider "food". Fandom was nothing if not inclusive.

There was indeed a monster head hung up in the kitchen. And it wasn't a mynock, but it was pretty hideous.

"Okay, no." Miguel narrowed his eyes at the busboy. "Unless you're making food from it, it does not go in the kitchen. And that thing looks like it's turning rancid already."

It didn't take much more than a small jump to grab it and haul it down. "I'm putting this in the dumpster. You can clean up the blood."

He came back in to a stubborn-looking cook.

"No, we're not making cochinita pibil - it would be ready tomorrow. If you want to start it marinading for next week, go right ahead."

Now the cook was sulking, but Luke's was open.

J.Lo had helped Tip set up for the evening, so along with the obligatory preponderance of glitter for any Student Council organized activity, there was also a non-zero amount of bubbles. Bubbles of every shape, size, and color drifted through the arcade, the shoe rental, the dining counter, everywhere but the bowling lanes, so as to not mess with the floor there if they popped. They weren't going to pop without extra effort, though. These were Boov bubbles, built to last.

"You know no one but you can tell that those say 'Welcome parents and guests', right?" Tip asked. Bill flew in indignant circles of her head, and J.Lo gave her the stink eye.

The weather was a little cloudy, but the temperature was just right. The decorations on the lawn were colorful and bright, inviting students, teachers, townies and their guests alike to come join the fun on the lawn, where a series of team activities had been set up for some light competition.

It was another brightly sunny day today, with a few clouds scattered across the sky above, and the flamingos were out in full force, congregating by the edge of the pond to watch the events that were going on in the park today. When the park got busy, food tended to be involved in great quantities, and several of the large pink birds were hoping that maybe somebody would throw some shrimp their way.

Wouldn't you like to, parents and assorted other visitors? Ignore the glitter and the people food, stop talking to those ridiculous teenagers you were here to see, and come pay attention to the birds!

The sun was out, as the sun always tended to be for these things, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Sure, there was a bit of pollen drifting about on the light breeze coming in from over the water, but it was really that time of year, wasn't it? Easy enough to explain something as simple as pollen to any people visiting today. Possibly less easy to explain that feeling that came along with it, of course.

Well, yesterday had been a big day full of catching up with loved ones, but today there were real activities planned! Although it had drizzled a bit the night before, by now the grass was dry and ready to be socialized on, almost as if Fandom knew that Student Council hadn't thought through a Plan B in case of rain and had decided to make things easier on them. The island was thoughtful that way. Now it was sunny and warm, and probably the best weather they'd had in a few weeks. You're welcome, parents.

Even if any of the guests had somehow been deliberately shielded from missed the signs about the field day in the park today, it was pretty easy to spot, what with all the brightly colored flags marking different stations, the big stage with a karaoke machine set up, the probably-larger-than-necessary buckets of station-specific equipment like balls and water balloons, and, of course, the picnic benches and food tables for anyone who just wanted to watch. Everything was perfect, assuming that whoever had commandeered the karaoke machine wasn't completely awful, so hopefully all the families would have a good time!

The day had dawned crisp and clear, but by the time afternoon had rolled around... it was really still kind of ridiculously warm for fall. People could probably get away with not wearing a sweater, even.

Which made rather good weather for a picnic, convenient since that was the traditional way of kicking off the Fandom High Parents' (and assorted other relatives, friends, acquaintances, or sometimes even enemies, but that was harder to fit nicely on a banner) Weekend. So there were rows of picnic tables decked out in blue and yellow, laid out with just about any sort of foodstuff one could imagine. Another successful weekend of avoiding angry and confused parental figures and listening to radio with a broad smile on his face and a tub of popcorn at his side meant Barney was happy to oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park.

Ah, but the morning was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim. With el presidente and the rest of the student council taking care of friends and family, it was up to Barney to make brunch happen. Amazing what an iPhone could do these days, like make tents, chairs, and tables of blue and gold appear all around the park along with tables of hot and cold cuisine perfect for what anyone might expect of brunch. Apparently there was an app for that.

And now for the sitting, chatting, and eating. Today was the day when everyone would say goodbye and flee the island, leaving the land peaceful once more. Barney thought it was a lot like what happened after invasions, just with less blood and goop on the streets.

Yesterday had been a complete surprise for Bod. He hadn't expected Silas and hadn't even been ready for something of that magnitude to happen to him so even a day later, he was still wound up and more than a little energetic.

Bod had plans to meet Silas this morning but the older man wasn't there yet. Bod didn't know where he'd gone after they'd departed but he knew better than to think about it too hard. For the moment, he was sitting alone, drinking something warm and picking at the muffin in front of him.

Silas hadn't told him much about what he and the Honour Guard had been doing since he'd last seen Bod but he hoped that would change today. He wanted to hear about where Silas had gone, if he'd returned to the graveyard and if he'd seen the last of the Jacks eliminated.

It was hard to just sit there when his mind was buzzing with so many different things but he knew Silas would only chide him and give him a very cool, very assessing look if he was found to be out of control. So, he'd stay there for now and wait for his guardian.
