"Of course there's nothing wrong with him. His wings are awesome!" The very idea of taking away FLYING was horrific to her. "So if it's genetic, I totally don't get why anyone would think it's a disease. Wouldn't that be just, like, evolution or something? You can't cure that, can you?"

She pinched her lip. "I've never heard of someone getting sick and catching wings! That's just..." Well, she'd say stupid, but then someone would show up from a world where that happened. "Odd."

"That's what the mutants say," Karla said, nodding. "That it's the next step in evolution. But Warren's dad calls it a corruption of cellular activity."

Which really explained a lot about some of Warren's issues. Karla couldn't imagine being told her whole life that her Craft was a corruption.

"Well, it kind of is a corruption too? I mean, a mutation means something isn't doing the thing it normally does, right? Depending on what it is, that could be a bad thing." Momoko didn't get the difference there.

But... "Although calling it the 'next step' is totally mean. No one likes to think they're going to become extinct." No wonder the non-mutants were willing to start a war.

"I think adaptation might be a better word for it," Karla said. "And, I mean, not all of the mutations I've seen are good ones. But still--I think half the reason they call themselves the next step is because they're just so damned tired of being called freaks and aberrations and being hated for something so completely out of their own control."

Momoko nodded slowly. "The opposite of what they think people think. It's still a totally horrible way to say it, but I can see what you mean. So no one is making it easy to get along."
