The Perk, Wednesday Morning

Strictly speaking, Leto hadn't needed to visit Fandom today. Those documents could have waited until Ghanima's next visit home, and he was well aware that it was just an excuse. These days he let himself indulge in excuses, however, if they didn't cause any disruption. Besides, yesterday had been quite a success, not to mention hilarious, as he had managed to confuse both the Ixians and a few of the Houses, by at first agreeing to their proposals and then turning them upside down, and making everyone unsure what they had actually agreed to, even after signing the documents. That was part of the excuse, because it really needed to be described in person.

And, because he was here, he could just stop by for a cup of coffee, and some quiet time just idly looking out the window.

"Of course," Leto replied. "That goes without saying." He drank from his cup, looking mostly amused. People wanting things from him could be entertaining, as it had been yesterday.

"So are you one of the politicians who wants things, or one of the politicians that has to deal with people wanting things?" Atton asked.

"The latter." Leto saw no reason to be deliberately vague anymore. "My sister and I rule the Imperium of our universe, mostly by controlling the most precious commodity there."

... Huh.

"So you're like, what, Merchant Emperors instead of Merchant Kings?" Atton said.

"I suppose you could say that," Leto grinned. "Although I have never heard anyone call me that before."

"Yeah? What do they call you, then?"

Atton had an innate distrust of bigwigs in general, sure. But he wasn't going to go spouting off about that and making an ass out of himself unless he saw a reason for Leto to think of him as one.

The guy had been perfectly polite otherwise, if overly amused by himself, anyway.

"I meant the merchant part. Although it is true to some extent." Well, combined with starting new religions. "My home world is Arrakis, a desert planet, and the only place where Spice can be found. It is said that if you control the Spice you control the universe."

Atton blinked. "What, like drugs?" he said. "Because I can hook you up with a bunch of pirate crews who are running my galaxy, then."

Leto had to laugh at that. "I suspect you'd find that there are different kinds of drug trade, and for different purposes. But thank you for the offer."

"It's not really an offer I'd recommend taking anyway," Atton said, "Since it's technically my job to reel these guys in and everything."

Not that he hadn't smuggled spice in his day, doot de doot doot.

"So you just show up here to, what, take a break from Emperoring?"

"More or less, yes." Leto wasn't going to deny that. "And to visit my sister. I also made a promise to Sparkle to teach him how to use a knife, which gives me another good reason."

"For my own sanity, I'm going to assume that's not a euphemism," Atton said, putting the remains of his now-cold coffee on the table. "But hey, good. The kid is always getting in trouble; maybe if he gets hit with enough training, he'll be able to fight his way out before it gets bad."

Leto was beginning to appreciate Atton's sense of humour. "I got the impression that was his goal too," he replied. "Which I didn't know when I gave him the knife. But yes, I have a few reasons to visit, but there is also nothing wrong with a break."

"He's had a bad couple of... years, really," Atton shared. "And... Look, okay, that kid is like a brother to me. You seem to cheer him up. If you're going to combine that with helping me kick him into shape, I'm glad."

Leto have a small nod, acknowledging what Atton had just said. He had guessed that Sparkle hadn't had an easy time, even if all he had heard was about was burning down a house and getting caught for it.

"And I'm glad we agree."

Atton nodded.

Then he cleared his throat and added, casually, "But, y'know, for the sake of my image as a manly big brother figure, let's just pretend that instead of having this conversation I threatened to come after you with a blaster if you screwed up, or something, all right?"

Those kinds of ridiculous threats Leto shouldn't take seriously.

...Like Atton would come after Leto with a blaster. It'd probably be more like a stealth generator, some knock-out mines, a laxative and a bunch of dead animals.

Leto replied to that with a crooked smile, saying: "To which I would of course reply that it would be unlikely that you'd be able to hurt me, although my sister might support your attempt." Well, at least claim she did. "Anything else?"

"Think at this point I'm supposed to glare at you and get super insistent about my abilities or something," Atton shared. "But I don't know. This seems like too nice of a day and a conversation to wreck with a hypothetical pissing contest, right?"

"I'm glad we agree on that too," Leto replied, quietly observing that he actually liked Atton so far, and that he found it quite amusing the way he made fun of, well, the image of himself.

"Good," Atton said. He picked up his empty cup. "Now I'm going to go get another one of these, because it is way too early for me to be up and running on one cup of coffee."

"With or without caramel?"

Sorry, Leto couldn't resist.

Atton half-turned and held up a finger (his index, not his middle) in Leto's general direction. "Oh, now you're on thin ice, smartass."

"I wouldn't expect less," he replied cheerfully, seeing: "I might have another cup as well."
