The Perk, Wednesday Morning

Strictly speaking, Leto hadn't needed to visit Fandom today. Those documents could have waited until Ghanima's next visit home, and he was well aware that it was just an excuse. These days he let himself indulge in excuses, however, if they didn't cause any disruption. Besides, yesterday had been quite a success, not to mention hilarious, as he had managed to confuse both the Ixians and a few of the Houses, by at first agreeing to their proposals and then turning them upside down, and making everyone unsure what they had actually agreed to, even after signing the documents. That was part of the excuse, because it really needed to be described in person.

And, because he was here, he could just stop by for a cup of coffee, and some quiet time just idly looking out the window.

One week, Mical had said, and then Atton could get back to work.

It was now a week and three days. He was - maybe a little - cranky. Years ago Atton might've enjoyed lazing around Fandom, but these days, it just made him more restless.

Which made coffee a fantastic idea, clearly.

He stopped by the counter and had half his order out before she boredly finished, "...and pretend I'm not sneaking in a hit of caramel."

"...Yeah. Uh. You do that."

Why would anyone try to hide their taste for caramel in their coffee? And fail, at that. So, Leto has to smile, while mostly looking out of the window. Not that that was a preference of his, but still. He didn't recognize the man, but that was true for most people in Fandom, these days.

Atton glanced over his shoulder at the guy as the barista made his coffee. Heard that, had he? "You heard nothing," he called.

"Oh, of course not," Leto replied, not exactly bothering to sound truthful. "I'm practically deaf. But at least tell me why I didn't hear that?"

"'Cause I drink manly black coffee," Atton said firmly. "All right?"

"My apologies," Leto said, not sounding apologetic at all. "That should have been obvious." He took a sip of his own coffee.

He considered adding something about the man's otherwise ladylike appearance but decided against it.

"Good," Atton said firmly. "Good, as long as we've gotten that straight."

He took his coffee from the barista. "New guy or alum?"

"Alum," Leto said. "I assume you are neither, then?" He paused for a moment, studying the stranger. "My name is Leto Atreides. Perhaps you'v met my sister Ghanima? She's a teacher here."

"Ghanima Atreides? Oh, yeah, she's hard to miss," Atton said, taking a quick sip of his coffee while it was still hot. "I'm a teacher, too. Atton Rand."

The name sounded familiar, but Leto couldn't place it. "So, what do you teach?" And, gesturing at the opposite chair by his table, he added: "Have a seat if you like."

"Field survival techniques," Atton said brightly, immediately sitting down in the offered seat. Because it wasn't like he had anything better to do today.

And because he definitely recognized who Leto was, now. "Doing my bit to make sure none of these kids bleed out when they decide to run off and do something stupid."

"A worth goal," Leto said, smiling a little. "I take it you have experience in the subject?"

"I've been shot at repeatedly and I'm still not dead," Atton said, sipping his coffee. "I think that counts."

Laughing softly, Leto said: "I would say it does." The description was probably an understatement, which was another reason to agree. "Any particular place you go to get shot at?"

"Home," Atton said easily, "A galaxy well away from here." He raised his chin. "How about you? What year did you graduate?"

He probably wasn't going to give Leto grief if he turned out to be outrageously too old for Sparkle, but still.

Leto raised an eyebrow at the evasive answer, but he has smiling. "In 2010," he said. "Although time seem to move faster in my universe. And despite that most people I knew as as student are no longer here."

Oh, he remembered where he had heard that name before. Leto told himself he needed to pay more attention, and silently debated with himself if he should bring it up. But why not, he decided, it might be interesting.

"You're Sparkle's friend, aren't you?"

"Yep," Atton said.

He lifted his cup back to his mouth and took a sip. "And you're his new... I don't know what. Booty call? Is that a word they use in your universe?"

No, he legitimately didn't know. He figured if Sparkle had gone and gotten himself an entire boyfriend, he'd have heard.

"No, but you could find equivalent expressions," Leto said with a grin, deliberately not answering the main question. He saw no reason to, and besides, he wasn't even sure himself, and that didn't bother him at all.

"Sparkle told me you're a Jedi." Perhaps even reluctantly if he remembered correctly, which made it an even better change of topic.

"Yeah, but don't hold it against me," Atton said easily, leaning back in his chair until it tipped back a little.

"I'll do my best not to." Leto took a sip of his coffee while giving Atton an amused look.

"I'm from a different era than the Jedi you might know," Atton explained, more seriously. "If you know any."

That made more sense. "I took a class for Anakin Skywalker while a student," Leto replied. "And there were members of his family at school with me. So, in what way has the Jedi changed between their time and yours?"

"It's a four-thousand year time difference," Atton said dryly. "Where do you want me to start, exactly?"

Leto shrugged lightly. He wasn't really concerned with the details, and if there was no short version of it - or if Atton just preferred not to talk about it - it didn't matter. He took another sip of his coffee.

Atton took a thoughtful sip of his own coffee. "Well, to begin with," he said, "All of the old Jedi died during the past three wars, so we're currently kind of making things up as we go along. Plus we wear sensible armor instead of dramatic sweeping robes. Don't know how that last bit got in there later on, 'cause it's stupid."
