Groovy Tunes, Sunday

Jono had his guitar out. It was an old-time's-sake deal, mostly, if you asked him. Honest. Reminiscent of days spent in a common room, or around one of the campfires before the campgrounds became a breeding ground for alien nightmare plague. He was sitting in the doorway by the street, enjoying the autumn air, and fingerpicking some - possibly not surprisingly - old grunge music.

You know. For old time's sake.

And not just because that was a thing he still did, because some things were eternal.

Okay, maybe a little bit of that, too.

[OOC: Open here, too! For those who haven't been around a while, the Groovy Tunes has moved into the old Boards space. Jono likes having a music shop with a stage and the potential for concerts in it.]

"Hey, old fart," Dante greeted him, an easy grin on his face and a guitar slung obviously over his back as he approached the building. "We doing anything this weekend?"

//You know, there's no possible way to come up with a counter-nickname to 'old fart' that doesn't just sound excessively creepy,// Jono complained. At least he sounded fairly good-natured about it. //And I've got no plans to go anywhere, looking to do a little playing this weekend?//

The guitar was a dead giveaway.

"Been a while since we jammed," Dante said lightly. "And we got more of an audience hanging around this go around."

//Some of them might even be people I know,// Jono allowed, amused. //So, have you got anything in particular you'd like to play today, then? Good luck getting me to come up with anything that kids like to listen to these days.//

This was a a blatant falsehood.

Dante snickered. "Trying to figure out more not-so-hard rock songs to teach Kathy later," he admitted. "It's that or let the country king teach her everything, and I can't stand for that."

//I like to pretend all country music stopped at Johnny Cash,// Jono admitted, pausing thoughtfully. //If you want easier rock for a beginner, we could go through some classics. Possibly something slightly reminiscent to the country she's used to, then you can sort of ease her in to things more your taste.//

"Not old fogey rock, she's getting that from Spencer too, I think," Dante mused. "But 80s? 90s? I got her started with some Foos."

//They play both those decades on classic radio too, these days,// Jono complained, because so help him, that was something worth complaining about, damn it. //But not a bad idea, either. Fun music, a little bit of a challenge, not too...// He waved a hand around. //Not too Eliot.//

Eliot had a talent for country that was impressive, Jono had to admit. But it wasn't exactly to his own tastes, either.

"Now you're getting me," Dante said, grinning. "Can I sit?"

//Make yourself comfortable,// Jono replied, nodding and waving a hand toward a chair that he could pull up if he cared to. //You got her started on Foo Fighters, then? Wouldn't be much of a stretch to get into Nirvana from there, naturally.//

What with the whole Dave Grohl connection, and all.

//Or is that too angry? Maybe she'd appreciate Chili Peppers or No Doubt more.//

He'd been about to suggest the Cranberries, but wisely decided at the last moment to not suggest a band whose most notable contribution to music history was Zombie.

... Yeah, no. That'd be bad.

"Thing is she knows those bands," Dante said, debating between the ground (lazy) or the chair (comfortable) for a few seconds before he snagged the chair and sat down in it, slinging his guitar over his leg. "But she's hell-bent on playing acoustic and I guess the country shit is easier?"

Dante did not think too highly of country shit.

//But... where's th'fun in easy?//

Jono maybe needed to challenge himself in order to not lose his mind.

"Don't ask me," Dante said, picking the bassline to a Tool song on his as-of-yet-unplugged guitar just to be a shit.

Jono wrinkled his nose a little. Okay, okay. Not every good song was a complicated one, either.

//So we're looking for easy songs that have the added bonus of not making you want to claw out your eardrums,// Jono surmised. //You could teach her Wonderwall, perhaps.//

Or was that too Oasis?

"Okay, I draw the line at Oasis," Dante said, pausing. "All right? Foo Fighters, I can do. Oasis is just not on."

And not just because of the warring brothers thing that hit way too close to home!

//Fair enough,// Jono replied, faintly amused. //Could've suggested Nickelback.//

Even Jono wasn't that sadistic.

"Yeah, but I like to think you have one ounce of decency in you," Dante said, shivering.

//I hide it deep down,// Jono replied, pleased with himself. Being a brat was fun, dammit. //But yes, there's some decency in there somewhere. Soundgarden, then? Or Muse?//

There were so many options, and he had no idea what Kathy even enjoyed.

"Soundgarden would be a good start," Dante mused. "That and Nirvana. Though fuck, talk about Starsmore's greatest hits."

//I was willing to go so far as the best of Aqua,// Jono replied, nose in the air. //I can't help it if everything I suggest gets the veto right up until I hit the grunge.//

Almost like they secretly had similar tastes after all.

Grunge was basically the angry teenager music of the 90s, right?

"You were talking Oasis."

//Well, would you consider Aqua?//

Now he was mostly just curious.

Dante's innate rock cool warred with his innate camp ridiculousness.

"Yeah," he said, after a beat. "Doctor Jones, Doctor Jones, callin' Doctor Jones..."

//Bet she'd enjoy it,// Jono replied, doing an admirable job of keeping his amusement off his face.

"Probably," Dante agreed. "But then who doesn't enjoy Aqua?"

Less ridiculous people, probably.

Jono strongly suspected he was married to one such person, but he simply gave a shrug of his shoulders all the same.

//Boring people,// he decided. //But you've got better sense than to invest your time in the boring ones, I'm sure.//

"You can say a lot for Kathy and Anders, but boring, they're not," Dante said, picking his way through something that sounded like the opening notes of 'Barbie Girl'.

//Boring, they're not,// Jono echoed, listening for a moment, then nodding and picking along. //But yeah, I'd say, if she's too intimidated by modern, non-country music, give her something that's so ridiculously fun she can't say no to wanting to give it a go. She's learning to play for the fun of it, right?//

"Mostly," Dante said. "Think she's also trying to get something going for herself after, y'know, shit went down."

He understood that.

Jono nodded faintly. It would be surprising to come across many people around here who didn't understand that, really.

//Then all the better to find music you think she'll enjoy,// he noted. //What does she usually listen to? If we don't have it, I can place an order, you know.//

"She listens to... basically everything?" Dante said. "Last week she kept going on about Babymetal."

Jono gave a long pause at that, and then hedged, //They're that cute Japanese metal band, right?//

He'd read about them somewhere or something, but he wasn't terribly familiar with them besides that.

"Yeah, young Japanese girls doing metal."

//Still sounds fun,// Jono decided. //She a big fan of imports as well, then?//

Babymetal wasn't exactly North American mainstream, after all.

"She likes her East Asian stuff, yeah," Dante said. "First gen kid thing, maybe."

//Might be,// Jono replied, nodding thoughtfully. //Think she'd appreciate if I imported a few songbooks from that neck of the woods, then? Kpop and Jpop ought to be fairly easy to get my hands on.//

"I think she'd love that," Dante said, after a pause to think about it.

Jono nodded a little.

//Then I'll put an order in before the day's through,// he decided. //Feel free to make off with them if they've arrived by your next shift, alright?//
