Luke's, Sunday
Kanan showed up for his Luke's shift a little earlier than usual in the hopes that he could coerce the cook into maybe making breakfast for him before customers started coming in for a change.
"... What do you mean, we don't serve pancakes anymore?"
The cook gave a solemn nod of his head.
"They just don't feel right. You wouldn't want me to make something that doesn't feel right, would you?"
"And what's that supposed to mean, 'feel right?' This is a diner! Pancakes have been our Sunday thing for a year and a half now! It's on the menu!"
Welcome to Luke's!
Today's Specials:
Waffles.
"It's on the kriffing menu!"

She stepped in, took one look at the specials board, looked at BDG, then back to the specials board.
"No," she stated, then turned right around to leave.
It...should be noted that she did not seem to be leaving at a particularly hurried pace, though.

And so he'd perked up considerably when Summer had come through the door.
... And then basically vaulted over the counter and ran to catch up with her when she turned around, because no, nope, not a chance she was getting out of this without at least giving him a hug.
"Not my fault! It's not my fault."
no subject
Still, she'd come in with a whole bit planned, and now she could get back to it. "Geez, BDG," she said, "what's a girl gotta do to get some pancakes in this joint?"
And, because it needed to be said, even though they all knew it, "The staff here is the absolute worst."
no subject
He had no clue just how badly he needed to be the Bus Driver Guy today, but now he was again and maybe life could get right back to some semblance of normal.
no subject
"I swear to God," Summer shouted, leaning away so Kanan didn't get too much of it in his ear or something, "there aren't pancakes on that specials board in the next five minutes, I am going to come back there and put them on it myself, and you do not want that to happen!"
Ahhh, yeah. That felt good. She was going to clearly make a great boss. But it still wasn't going to feel as good as the hug that now followed, nice and tight and fairly glomping. "What up, BDG?"
no subject
"Missed having you here to push them around," he informed her. "You missed some rough weeks, there."
Damn fish.
no subject
"Rough weeks?" Summer frowned a little as she pulled away, after giving another good squeeze of reassurance in response to his squeezing as well as the words. Squeezes all up in this business. "How so?"
But she shook her head. "Wait, no," she said, "we have to do it properly." With a hand on her shoulder, she turned him around before heading over to the counter herself. "Come on."
Summer sighed when she sat down, contented, like a puzzle piece finally in place. "Much better. Now." Her eyes met his frankly. "Talk to me."
no subject
"You, uh, don't mind if it gets a little... heavy? It gets a little heavy."
Okay. More than a little.
no subject
Sure, she had her own exciting news, but that could wait. Since she definitely wasn't going anywhere any time soon, anyway.
She nodded. "You know if there's anything I can handle," she said, "it's usually the heavy stuff. I eat the heavy stuff for breakfast. Lay it on me."

"Looks like I might be in a position to continue my training." He paused, realizing that maybe he hadn't mentioned many specifics about... that whole thing. Which in hindsight would be important if she was still aiming for heading to his galaxy at some point. "Jedi... Force..."
He waved a hand around.
"Powers thing. My training was interrupted when the Empire tried to kill us all off. They missed one of us."
That was a little more cavalier than he'd like for it to sound. It was hard to turn the emotions on more often than not, even now.
no subject
Like, she knew that there was still a lot left to unpack out of Kanan, but sometimes he said things that just made her want to reach over and shake it all out of him at once.
"Okay," she said, "a second to unpack that. When you say they missed one of us, I'm assuming you mean you, which means you just nonchalantly dropped an 'everyone else is dead' bomb on me," which, fair enough, that was a good one to drop on her as she'd encountered more 'everyone is dead' situations than she'd like to admit, "but that also means you found someone else if you're continuing your training? Or do you mean it in a 'they missed one us not including me, and I found that other person and so now I might be continuing my training?'"
See what happens when you don't talk about your shit, BDG? You confuse poor little hopeful-Empire-breakers who just wanted to eat pancakes and flaunt a fat check.
"Either way," she said, "there's still a little bomb in there, and, lemme guess, you're dealing with reservations about starting it up again, in case the same thing happens again or it puts big targets on you and everyone else involved? Or am I way off and business school has made me rusty?"
no subject
"... Maybe I should begin at the beginning, huh?" He ducked his head, frowned, and looked down at the countertop. "I've been... it... for almost a decade now. The others that I might be training under are from completely different eras. Spread over... thousands of years. I guess I can thank Fandom for that. But you aren't wrong. On either count, really."
no subject
There were reasons her grampa didn't even touch time travel, but she supposed, around here, it couldn't be helped.
no subject
Kanan looked down at the countertop for a moment, swallowing a lump in his throat, even as he tried and mostly failed to continue to look casual about the whole thing.
"I went back to the place I grew up, the other week. Four-thousand years before... before my time. I haven't been there since-" He blew out a breath. Right. Okay. He was going to look up, now. Ceiling, don't fail him where the countertop did. "I'm still the last, so far as I'm aware. There are people who are capable of learning to do what I can do. There always will be. And Fandom's shown me people I thought were long dead. I have no way of knowing for sure if they are in my reality. Just like I have no way of knowing if the future restoration of my Order is something that will ever come to pass for me, either. It's complicated."
When were the Jedi not complicated?
"I have yet to find anyone else back home, and I can't trust anything I find here."
no subject
Funny how the countertop wasn't working for Kanan; it seemed to work for Summer pretty well after a moment, frowning as she thought of what to say. But she did look up at him once she finally found something. Maybe not much, but something.
"I'm sorry, BDG. I know that can't be easy. And I know it doesn't fix or change anything, but at least you do have now, even if the past and the future is....just....a big fuck up. I mean, I know I say it all the time, but this place is so weird on the whole spectrum of different universes and timelines that you can't really think about stuff like that or you'll probably wind up on the timeline where you totally crack and go crazy."
She offered a faint, sardonic smile. "Which I wouldn't like. And, I'm glad to say, I'll definitely do my best to help prevent. Hey, hey, if anything...if this week turns out to be just as heavy as the last few...then I'm making you take an ice cream and cheesy movie sleepover night with me."
Promise or threat? Probably a little of both.
no subject
"For what it's worth, it's an old scar. It just seems to keep getting picked at a lot these days. I'll be fine." Probably. "Ice cream and bad holos doesn't seem too terrible even without me losing my mind, though. You can come over to our apartment. Stance misses you, you know."
Stance missed everyone he hadn't seen for ten minutes, so it was a fair bet, anyway.
"... You're back, then? Sticking around for a while?"
no subject
Then she bit her lip, trying to think of the best way to be coy about the whole sticking around part, but, ahhh, screw it. "Or," she offered, "you can also come over to my apartment."
no subject
"An apartment? So you are planning on being here for a while. Good, I'll get to pester you way more easily than when you were living in the dorms."
Because Kanan was such a pest.
"So, where are you living? What are you doing around town?"
Enough about his trauma, Kanan wanted details, dammit.
no subject
But, yeah, no, this was way better.
"Well," said Summer, "I don't have an apartment yet, but after this and my other thing, I'm heading over to MHA to check it out. What, you didn't think I just came for pancakes, did you?"
Intentionally not mentioning what her other thing was quite yet? Maaaaybe.
no subject
She was one of his best friends. On a very, very short list of friends he'd had, ever. Of course he was excited to have her around for a while.
no subject
Namely, telling her family. Which she hadn't exactly done yet. Whoops? But with her family, it was usually better to act than ask first, because then, oh, no, look at that, it's too late to do anything about it now...! Oh, well...
"Aside from this, today's all business. Apartment, then dropping this," Summer drew out the cashier's check out of her purse and slapped it on the counter for him to see, "off and, you know, probably just scribbling down my signature on a few contacts and papers, no big deal."
She trusted he'd been in this universe long enough to recognize that the number on the check was not exactly chump change, and she trusted he was observant enough that he might recognize the name of the recipient, and the little "For Turtle & Canary" note on the bottom as well.
no subject
No, really. That was what the Force was for. He grinned, and then glanced down at the 'no big deal' check.
And blinked.
His eyes did an interesting thing where they went really wide for a moment, there. He'd been a half-decent smuggler in his lifetime, had even taken some bounty hunting contracts over the years with a tidy payout, but that was more money than he'd ever had in his life.
"... Space, Summer. How- what?"
He was duly impressed.
no subject
She couldn't help a small giggle, though. "It's nothing nearly as exciting as I would have liked," she warned him. "Apparently, my grandparents...my dad's mom and dad, obviously not Grampa Rick...have been putting away money for my graduation since they knew I was coming. Some of it's from some investments my gramma's boyfriend made. Fun fact: I guess BitCoin in my dimension isn't just a giant scam after all. They didn't give it to me right away because they promised my mom they'd wait until her weird community college power trip thing was done. Obviously, it would make great seed money for the jello shop, but it's way too soon for that, I haven't even started to hammer out the logistics of that, so..."
She shrugged, trying to seem nonchalant about it, but that was an exercise in futility and the smirk resurfaced. "I figured this was a good experience stepping stone. If anything, you know the list of suppliers and vendors at that place has got to be insane. And probably a few from your universe, though maybe not the exact same one, but then I can build some connections, get a better grasp on the economy out there, get a better idea of what my game plan will end up being. So if there's anything from your universe you might want to see, let me know, and I can try to see if I can get it!"
...she had thought about this...a lot since Friday, yes.
"Oh!" And she was clearly thinking about it now, too, struck with a light of more inspiration. "I know! I can start by trying to get those fruits that Hera likes! Melonroons, or something like that? Oh, but don't tell her! If it works, I'd like it to be a surprise."
no subject
He leaned back a little and grinned.
"Sounds like you have it pretty figured out," he added. "This looks like a great way to get an eye for where to set up shop, get suppliers..." He grinned at her. "I'm impressed."
no subject
The Sanchez side of her might be a little thrilled to potentially be BDG's main source for caf. Mwa ha hahaha.
"Don't act so surprised," Summer snorted, tossing her ponytail a little. "Like I don't have my shit together some of the time.
"Oh, but that does remind me. I've gotta swing by the Community Center to talk to someone about a class. I'm gonna teach a class, too. You're gonna take it. I'm not telling you what it is, but you still have to take it. Deal?"
There was possible future caf on the line now, Jarrus.
