The Machinery Underneath Fandom, Late Thursday Night

When it came to sneaking and infiltrating, seven was a decent-sized group. Small enough a group to make sure that they could get in and get out easily, but large enough they could probably take out anything they might run into by accident - and with enough diverse talents to handle any non-fighty challenges that came up, too. Or, at least, one hoped so.

Sometime after midnight, Liam led the team down into the machinery beneath the island, sneaking past several Army Trooper patrols to do so. There were a few heart-pounding minutes, but eventually the last of them slipped into the darkness, sealing the entrance behind them.

For anyone who had never been down here - especially anyone interested in machinery or computers - it was an amazing sight, even with most of the usual materials replaced by Lego blocks. It was like a second city but completely underground and made of machinery. Liam had the blueprints of the area from the last time it had malfunctioned, but translating two dimensional lines on paper to this 3D monstrosity might take a little effort

Shuri

Shuri was taking a good moment to marvel a bit at the engineering. "Reminds me of home."

Liam

Liam, meanwhile, was unfolding a comically large paper map of the place.

Because his comically large Global was basically just a piece of plastic with a sticker where the screen should be, so a digital version of the map was right out.

"If I ever see another piece of Lego again it'll be too soon," he grumbled, trying to pinpoint where they needed to go.

Kanan

"It's definitely colorful," Kanan noted, squinting as he looked around. "I'd offer a light for that, but apparently batteries weren't included."

He waved his lightsaber around a little. Mostly because that was what generally happened when it was a part of your hand sculpt.

Amaya

"On the bright side," said Amaya, once she managed to get her own marveling out of the way, though, truth be told, she was still kind of gawking a little with her eyes dancing over the machinery, trying to follow all the lines and turns and possibilities. She stepped forward a bit, reaching out to place a hand on it, as if she might still feel the thing churning. "A build this complex has probably got a lot of power behind it, and that likely means some big cores to go with it. I'd assume. I'd hope. Because zounds, if it doesn't....!"

Okay, Amaya, at least try not to get too distracted? She tried to follow a line of connectivity along the machine, then shook her head. "I shoulda brought a bigger wrench."

Kitty

"This is my... third time down here," Kitty said, trying to get in a spot where she could see the map, and god, island, get it together, three times? "Some of looks familiar just from that."

Liam

"So you're probably the most familiar with this place," Liam realized, shifting so that Kitty could get a better look at the map. "I came down here once for a look around, when I first learned about it, but that's it. We're... here," he pointed (or more accurately, slapped with his entire hand) at a spot on the map. "Any idea where we need to go?"

Keyleth

The toy mouse on wheels that had been following along with the group shifted back into . . . the unpainted resin figurine that was Keyleth this week.

Keyleth, who was honestly wondering what she was doing here with a bunch of people who knew way more about technology than she did, and felt like this tiny resin body made her look way cooler and more competent than she was. Anyway.

"I don't know, but . . . I might be able to give a little bit of a boost to whoever tries to take point on this?"

Which was to say she really wanted to try out that Guidance cantrip she'd learned.

Tony

"This is my... second time down here? I think," Tony said, looking around. It was hard to tell because helmet, but he was. "Kitty, looks like you're our point-woman."

Shuri

"I'd be more useful if I had thumbs," Shuri muttered. "The important stuff is always in the middle, right?" She ambled over to the map, apologizing if her tail knocked into people. "So--that way, Kitty?" she asked, pointing with her nose.

Kitty

"It's been a while," Kitty warned, "but looks like this way, yeah."

Starting off in that direction, she asked, "What kind of boost are we talking?"

Kanan

"If we get all the way to what we're looking for and find out that we're missing a set of Double-A's, I'm going to be unhappy," Kanan noted, clunking along on his stupid plastic platform.

He was starting to get the hang of it, at least.

Liam

"You'll be on defense. Thumbs are less useful than you'd think, right now," Liam told Shuri dryly, waving one plastic hand. The thumb moved, yes, but that was literally the only part of said hand able to move independently.

Amaya

Though she'd been mostly distracted in scoping out the machinery around them and trying to get the machinery of her own brain kickstarted with some idea, Amaya and her Kung-Fu Hammer GripTM snorted faintly at that. Most of her attention was gripping (sorry!) onto the question of power.

"A lot of this seems excessive," she noted. "If anything, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what things might not be necessary for the base function of the machinery so that we can whip up together a manual generator. I think there's enough of us who aren't limited in our movements that we can put together a charge if we need it. Hopefully, though, maybe the stall isn't even related to a lack of power, perhaps something's just blocked or stuck! That's a cinch! Of course, the real trouble's going to be if we run into the fact that it's some sort of magical stopper on it, those are always a real pain in the rear, but it's probably a little too much to ask that all it needs is a nice kick in the gears..."

It should be noted that Amaya may have started out talking to the rest of the group, but by the end of it, she had sort of rambled off and was mostly talking to herself and/or the equipment.

She'd just discovered there was a giant mechanism under the island running it; she was gonna be distracted, alright?

Tony

"Ugh, magic," Tony muttered. It was like a knee-jerk reaction or something.

Sorry, Keyleth.

Keyleth

Keyleth would have given him such a wounded look if her face was capable of it.

"That's a really useful form, believe me," she said to Shuri, offhandedly, but glanced back toward Kitty. Sort of. She was really just pivoting her entire round base back and forth to address people.

"It's not much," she said apologetically, "just a minor spell, but it sort of . . . makes your senses a little sharper for a little bit?"

Hey, sometimes you rolled just 1 below the DC you needed to succeed on that ability check. Even if you rolled a 1 on that additional d4 you got to add thanks to Guidance, it could make all the difference!

The machinery here was beyond her. Better to just focus on supporting the others.

Kitty

"Hey, I'll take it," Kitty told her. "It's easy to get distracted down here, I'm all for sharp senses."

Kanan

"Anything that can give us a leg up at this point, I'll take," Kanan agreed. "Force knows my own senses aren't what they should be."

He just wanted to know if people wanted him dead. Was that really too much to ask?

Shuri

"Yes, please," Shuri said, "and I'd love any tips. I keep falling over my paws!"

Liam

Liam folded away the map (don't ask where he put it, just trust that it somehow made its way into a pocket, despite the fact that he was entirely made of molded plastic) and unholstered his disproportionately large gun. The gun even... sort of worked, though Liam definitely felt ridiculous every time he had to fire it.

A lot of things about this week were ridiculous, honestly.

"This place isn't usually guarded," he said, as they continued on. "But there's no way our luck's that good."

Kitty

"Oh, I've started mentally planning for all the worst case scenarios," Kitty agreed. "I've been here too long."

She had plastic fists! She did not come with weaponry. But at least her powers worked!

...and if the place was guarded by gremlins at least it was hard to make with the chompy chompy with a bunch of toys.

Amaya

"If anything," Amaya said thoughtfully, "there's enough of us to create a diversion against guards. A bit risky and bold, but I've always felt that fortune does favor the bold..."

Kanan

Kanan considered that for a moment, and then he gave a resolute nod.

"I'm good for diversions," he noted. "You need me to knock something down over there while we're all standing over here, I can do that." A pause, and then he added, "I might be able to convince one or two of the troopers to turn on their own, too. It's not much, not with the numbers they move in, but it's better than nothing."

Shuri

"And I can...smoosh them," Shuri said, sounding annoyed. "Normally I'm much more useful."

Liam

"I should still have a little sway with them as well, 'bad toy' or not," Liam acknowledged. "They're not terribly bright. Used to taking orders." Not thinking about how he'd been just as happy to follow orders two days ago, not thinking about it, not thinking about it...

Kitty

Kitty paused.

"Can we just tell them to go somewhere else?"

It couldn't be that easy, right?

Liam

"It's worth a try," Liam said. "Of course, if the guards aren't just Troopers, that probably won't work."

Amaya

"We try that," said Amaya, thoughtfully, "and if that works, great. If not, then we send out the distraction, especially if they're none too bright, like you said, and the rest of us'll slip in while all that's going on and see what we can do?"

It was actually seeming to come together in a way that might actually work, so that was encouraging! Or maybe Amaya just wanted to move things along a little quicker, because she was really just itching to see what this thing looked like right at the very heart of the matter.

Kanan

"Excellent," Kanan said, giving a quick nod. "Then there's Team Diversion sorted out. Who's going to be giving actually kick-starting the machinery a stab? So we know who it is we're diverting from?"

Shuri

"I vote for Mr. Stark and all of his equipment," Shuri said, pointing to Tony's back with her paw, narrowly not falling over to do it. "Do you have hands that work?" she added.

Tony

Had he not been made of plastic, Tony would have made such a face at the 'Mr' part of that.

"I brought some."

THE SOONER THEY WERE BACK TO NORMAL, THE BETTER.

Shuri

Getting lost many times while walking there? Check. Successfully avoiding one group of plastic Army guys that really had no business being down there? Also check.

And now: "I'm going to guess that this much machinery in one place means we've found what we're looking for," Shuri said, sounding a bit awed. So many shiny things! Bast, she missed having fingers.

Tony

"Let's get started," Tony said, begrudgingly replacing his hands with one's with more slightly more articulation. "This will never not be creepy."

Kanan

"I'm going to pretend I didn't just see you swap out your hands," said the guy whose hand was permanently fused to a plastic lightsaber. Kanan smiled crookedly as he took up a position to keep watch while the techies worked. "If that's all the same with you."

Kanan, you literally had a chunk missing from your foot after spending all week trying to pry it free from your base.

Kitty

"Just think of how much happier-" Ugh. "-we'll all be after we have our correct parts back," Kitty said, wandering closer to the machinery to see what was what.

Keyleth

Keyleth wasn't sure how well it would work in this form, but she was holding a fog cloud spell, ready to release in case they needed to be obscured to make a quick getaway.

"I'll cover you guys."

She'd try, at least.

The hands thing was creepy and might throw her off her game.

Liam

"Well," Liam sighed, bending down awkwardly to examine one of the control panels. "I'd thought things were going a little too well." The control panel in question was pretty thoroughly smashed.

Kitty

"That's... definitely not immediately fixable," Kitty said, sounding calm while really cursing internally.

Like a lot.

Amaya

"Well, not with that attitude," said Amaya, stoutly, who did rather believe anything could be fixable if you tried hard enough.

But she also sometimes counted pitching something out a window as 'fixing it.'

"Maybe if we pried it open it could still be salvageable? I'd be willing to give it a look, while we consider exactly what our Option B might be?"

Liam

Liam had jury-rigged a few mechanical systems in his time, but truthfully, his skills lay more on the programming end of the scale. Especially when dealing with non-organic tech. If Amaya thought there might be something she could do, he wasn't about to say no.

"Go for it," he nodded.

Amaya

Well, then. Amaya'd been working this Blacksmith Action ArmTM of her non-stop all week...might as well put it to some actual use instead of just beating on fake plastic weapons, right?

She grinned, eager to finally get her fingers into something...literally, as she ran her hand along the edge of the bashed-in panel to find the best place to gain a purchase. She braced one foot against the console, got that nice Action Hammer GripTM in place, and, with a considerable grunt, pulled.

The panel came tearing off as easily as a sheet of paper in a notebook, but Amaya hardly had time to gloat. Almost as soon as the panel was pried from its poor, bashed bolts, the alarm began to blare all around them.

"Ah, zards."

So. About that Plan B?

Army Troopers

Within seconds, a swarm of several dozen Army Troopers (significantly more Troopers, for the record, than were usually present on the island) descended upon the group.

"You're not supposed to be in here!" several of them said in unison.

Liam

"Sure we are!" Liam replied brightly. "We're testing the alarms to make sure they work in case any Bad Toys sneak down here."

Army Troopers

The Troopers traded confused looks amongst themselves. That... didn't seem right... but Liam was also their boss.

"Uh..." for a moment, it looked like they might actually buy it. But the moment passed pretty quickly.

"You're the Bad Toys!" one of them gasped, sounding personally betrayed by this revelation. "Get 'em, boys!"

Shuri

Shuri roared threateningly at them because her manufacturer hadn't known what sound a panther made and tried to block as many of the Troopers as she could, but she wasn't that big a plushy.

Keyleth

A couple of things happened in quick succession.

First, Keyleth glanced over at the smashed control panel and caught a glimpse of something inside the space.

"Maybe someone should grab that," she blurted out, indicating the panel; it wasn't that she recognized it so much as she had a gut feeling about it.

Second, as the Army Troopers started to close in on everyone, she made the last little gesture to release the spell energy she'd been holding onto and swirls of fog began to fill the area. It wouldn't protect them, but it might confuse the troopers for a bit.

Or, you know, them.

Kanan

Kanan blinked at the fog as it filtered in. Said a few rude words under his breath. This was going to turn into mass confusion fast.

"Kitty! I think that's gotta be on you," he called. "You stand the best chance of getting out of here with it!"

And then he turned toward the Troopers, raising his lightsaber, for all the good it did, and holding his ground. He didn't have a hell of a lot of choice. It wasn't like he could run with his feet stuck together like this.

Kitty

Kitty opened her mouth to protest, but she couldn't really argue. She didn't have to fight her way out, and if this thing would help, then they could use it to save everyone.

"Got it!" she called, rushing to the panel to grab the nesting doll that had been hidden in there.

...Okay. No time to question that.

She phased, starting to airwalk up through the air and through the ceiling (technically ground?) above.

Liam

Liam watched Kitty go, and then turned his attention back to the more immediate problem, squinting at the Troopers through the fog. "Sorry about this," he said to the Troopers, before aiming his gun and firing.

Trying to fire. Because nothing happened. Liam sighed, rolled his eyes, and took aim again. "Pew pew pew," he muttered, resignedly. This time, laser bolts flew from his pistol and knocked aside a few of the Troopers.

Tony

"There's too many, fall back!" Tony shouted, glad that he didn't need to say 'pew pew!'

But he did have to change his hands again.

Amaya

And here Amaya felt like she was at a bit of a tough decision. It shouldn't have been tough, but did she really take all that trouble to tear off that panel and let something like an alarm and swarming troopers stop her from actually getting a good look at the inside of this thing?

Of course not! She could just take one peek, right? But then again...Stark did say fall back. But then again, she never was much of a fighter, she had a pretty mean right hook, but maybe she should just leave it to the experts...

Then again...

Her indecision defintely left her vulnerable and open and she no longer had the luxury of choice. She did still have an insanely strong arm and that arm was holding a big metal panel that was surprisingly good for thwacking troopers with. At least the first few. The several, several more after that...

At least she got a few good smacks in, though, before it became clear that the numbers were very clearly not on their side.

Keyleth

Keyleth made a distressed sort of whimpering noise and glanced around (sort of rocking one way and then the other on her little round base) and realized she just might have screwed herself over with this fog thing. She flailed her hands a little, casting a quick gust of wind that cleared the air immediately around her just long enough for her to realize that the troopers were closing in on her.

She made another distressed noise, though more of a squeak this time, and tried to summon some entangling vines to keep them back.

It probably would have worked better if they hadn't been plastic and inflexible Lego vines.

Kanan

Lightsaber fused to one hand, blaster fused to one hip, here Kanan was, regretting not bringing something detachable to fend these troopers off with. Maybe he could throw somebody's hand...

No, throwing people's body parts around was rude. And he could only throw so many troopers back at a time using the Force, before twice as many seemed to swarm in to take their place. When the first caught up to him, he tried a, "You don't want to be doing this," with a wave of one hand.

He was met with an incredulous look and an insistence that there was only one thing to do to a group of bad toys, and they were here doing it. And that was why Kanan was shouting, "Oh, come on!" as he, too, was swarmed.

He never did trust those damn clones.

Tony

Tony wouldn't be Tony if he didn't attempt to wade into that swarm to pull his compatriots out. Which was why he too wasn't making it out of here.

"Hey, give me that hand back!"

Still weird.

Shuri

"Gross!" Shuri agreed from where she was vigorously gumming the legs of one of the troopers. She wasn't getting out, but at least she was going down fighting, a vast improvement over a week of silent screaming.

Liam

Liam opened his mouth to set off another round of 'pew pew pews', only to be stopped as he was tackled by a group of Troopers.

"Oh no you don't," one of them admonished him, clapping a green plastic hand over his mouth. "You've been naughty, boss. You've all been naughty. And the big boss says naughty toys get sent to the Toybox."
