Was it tacky to advertise for your big party on the weekend during your bar shift on Wednesday? Did Summer really care?

Because you could definitely bet Summer was going to try and tell everyone about that party, and, even if she didn't get around to it, she had a few ubiquitous flyers up around the place and smaller little print-outs advertising for the Big Beefcake Birthday Blowout Bash (sorry, Eliot; like a magpie, this one, but she did, clearly, improve on it), juuuust in case anyone missed it.

Look, she had to cover all of her bases. She was pretty sure she might actually die if she threw a party and, like, no one showed up. Forget parasitic brain eaters, evil galactic empires, the breaking of time and space as we know it....a bad party was, like, the most terrifying thing in the entire multiverse.

"I've never met anyone who wasn't from a version of my universe who had heard of us," Stark said. "And there haven't been many of those here. But yes, I think so? I'm not sure. But I haven't been sick here. Not very often before, either."

Maybe it was the whole not-entirely-corporeal thing?

That was a good possibility! Corporeality was, after all, arguably a mistake.

"That's actually really fucking cool," Steph remarked. "Have you been here long?"

Oh, Steph. You once again had no idea.

"Almost 2 years this time," Stark said after thinking about it. He'd sort of lost track of time this year, so far. "I think. And twice before that. So yes. You're still new?"

New enough that he hadn't run into her, anyway.

"New-ish. About six months now?" Steph's eyebrows twitched upward; she hadn't realized until she said it that it had actually been that long already. "I just hadn't been getting out very much."

"I haven't either," Stark said with a rueful almost-smile. "Not much at all."

"That's not entirely true. I have been getting out, just going off-island to play gigs and stuff. Not so much actually, you know, getting involved in the community. But hey. Look at us trying to fix that," Steph said, raising her glass at him.

"I'm trying," Stark agreed. It had been a long and strange few months.

"Right now being around people is better than not, I think. Much better than around raccoons."

"Yeah, I'm not sure you can go anywhere but up from being around raccoons," Steph said thoughtfully.

"There are worse places," Stark said, not at all ominously. "I assure you."

He'd been in one not that long ago, actually!

"But on the island, yes, I think everywhere is likely to be an improvement."

Yeah, Steph was sort of belatedly realizing that Alex would say the bottom of that abandoned Typhon mining shaft was worse.

"In the context of on the island, yes," Steph amended. "Where the people are pretty damn cool."

"They are. Usually. It's a good place. It's home, sometimes."

He still wasn't sure if it was home right now. He wasn't sure anywhere was.

"Subject to change?" Steph guessed. "I feel that. For me, that's sort of wherever I am at the moment, which for now is here. Maybe the foreseeable future, too."

"Sometimes home is a ship," Stark said, glancing upward. "Sometimes it's been here. Sometimes I'm not certain. I'm not planning on leaving again. For now."

"Nothing wrong with being a wandering weirdo," Steph said with a little crooked smile. "It's a perfectly valid lifestyle."
