First Responder's Memorial Day Barbecue - Fire Station and Selkie Lake, Monday

The firehouse was all ready for guests, cleaned as much as humanly possible and organized within an inch of its life. Which meant it was time for people to come in and mess all that up.

But, you know. Lovingly.

And just across the way at Selkie Lake, the food and the general mingling place was all set up for people. Because it was time for the First Responder's Memorial Day Barbecue!

Lucy wasn't quite sure what was being celebrated today -- she'd have to do a little research on which war was being memorialized here, and all that -- but she did recognize infectious community spirit when she saw it! And celebrating public safety workers seemed like an incredibly noble cause to her, too, so she was here and people-watching and hesitantly helping herself to some food and a soda while she was at it.

Steve gave her a wave from the grill. "Need anything else?"

"Oh! I'm good, thank you," Lucy told him with a wave of her soda can, though she also recognized an opportunity for information when she saw one. "Are you one of the --" she consulted, briefly, to make sure she had the right phrase, "first responders? Or do they just have you doing their cooking for them?"

She could kind of suss out the meaning there, even if it wasn't terminology she was familiar with.

"I'm Steve McGarrett," Steve said with a smile, "I work over at the Trooper Station and I'm also a cop in Honolulu, Hawai'i."

"Lucy MacLean," she offered, juggling her plate and drink a little so she could stick a hand (with that necrotic index finger, no big deal) out for a shake. "Seems like you're a ways from home, though. Hawaii?"

Lucy actually knew very little about the Hawaii of her time, but given the kitsch and Americana of pre-war sensibilities and decor, she was familiar with a distant idea of Hawaii, at least. Hula girls. Ukuleles. Pineapples.

"I went to school at the Naval Academy in Annapolis a while back, so I'm not upset about being in Maryland," Steve said with another smile, "and the portals make it so much easier to go back than all of those hours stuffed into coach on a plane."

Lucy was doing her best to follow along, she really was. Plane she knew, Naval she could figure out.

But she was puzzled, all the same, and it showed all over her face.

"Coach like...for a team?" she asked, her tone making it abundantly clear that she knew she was missing something here.

Steve picked up on the confusion immediately. "Like a section of an airplane when I fly. Coach is for regular people and the seats are tight and squished. And I'm not a small guy, so it's not a fun trip on a ten hour flight. Where are you from?"

And possibly when?

"Oh, that makes sense," Lucy noted, eyeing Steve and immediately thinking of how well Chet, who had a similar build, would fit into a situation like that. (Poorly.) "I'm from -- well, Vault 33, but I'm told 'Los Angeles' is the better answer to use around here."

Even if the LA area Lucy was used to was almost unrecognizable compared to what it looked like now. (Even pre-war Los Angeles. For one thing, the sign in the hills here just said, 'Hollywood,' with no mention of, like, sponsorship.)

"Got it in one," Lucy noted, looking impressed. "It's 2296 back home."

A pause, and then, because people seemed curious, she noted, "We have a good while before the bombs fall, if you're worried."

"Still a little worried," Steve said, stopping his glance up to the sky with a guilty look. "My partner--" he pointed to Danny, "--and I dropped a nuke into the Pacific Ocean a year back because some terrorist had gotten their hands on one."

Normal picnic small talk!

"But that neutralized the threat other than making people afraid to eat seafood for a bit."

"Not to minimize the danger of a single nuclear bomb," Lucy hedged -- having, recently, seen the damage a single nuke could do to a town, for example, "but where I'm from...like, hundreds were dropped. Hundreds. The whole country...."

And then, as though worried it seemed like she didn't think Steve and his partner were heroic for their efforts -- she did! -- she added, "But I'm glad you guys stopped that one!"

Steve smiled. "Thanks," he said. "We're fortunately no longer in the mutually-assured destruction part of our nuclear deterrence, at least in my universe. We in the 'have too many and sometimes they get lost' stage, which is also not terrific."

"Hi Jon!" Lucy called, actually quite pleased to see a familiar face. She was acquiring those by the day, but still -- for someone who had grown up seeing the exact same people every single day of her life, Fandom was both a little bit of an adjustment, and also basically training wheels for this concept compared to the wasteland. "I'm great as can be. How're you?"
