It felt like every single day, Lucy woke up and told herself she was used to the temperature outside, and then every single day she ended up feeling over-humid halfway through a walk outside.

At least when she was headed to work, she could get an iced coffee on her way in -- and by now, she'd even figured out what she liked, and had buddied up to the gremlin enough that they were working on her drink as soon as she headed in the door.

That was nice. She kind of felt like she needed to figure out the little thing's name, if they were going to be good friends, but she was also learning that friendship came in a lot more different forms than she'd thought.

The ballroom was positively sparkling with glitter and the light off of the brand new chandelier for the occasion. (Which should really come as a surprise to no one considering how many chandeliers they'd cycled on through for previous events.)

In preparation to the many amateur skaters they were anticipating, the half-sized walls around the skating rink--now located below the chandelier and taking up three quarters of the normal ballroom space--were well-padded.

There were drinks and appetizers and plenty of good music ready for people to come in and have a fun evening out if they were so inclined! Time to roller disco!

The Ghoul and Dogmeat were behind the desk, not doing much in particular. The Ghoul had a cup of the blackest coffee he could get, and Dogmeat was chewing on a stick she had picked up on the walk here. He was well aware of a party later but, no, he would not be showing up to that.

Ghouls didn't use roller skates. It'd mess with his whole vibe.

The rainbow in the sky over the island for Pride was tradition, any and all weather logic be damned, and it seemed to be especially -- almost defiantly -- bright this year.

And the festival's organizer wouldn't have it any other way.

The park was all decked out in rainbows, glitter, and miniature Pride flags of different varieties. The bounce house and ballpit slide were back again to serve as the centerpiece this year, as were the assortment of rides and very queer-themed carnival games.

The stage with its NPC bands and open-mic sessions was set up next to the picnic area, where an assortment of highly moddable foods had been provided by whichever restaurants Steph had strong-armed into prevailed upon to contribute. Tables and booths were set up on the other side of the picnic area for any vendors or local businesses that wanted to take part, but don't worry, no one was going to try and get you to sign up for a credit card or anything like that. Steph would have personally beaten anyone who tried that over the head with their own clipboard.

Happy Pride, Fandom! Have at it.

Today was slow enough that Lucy was actually able to do a bit of work for herself, once she'd finished up with a few phone repairs.

And really, that had been the inspiration -- with a taken-apart phone for comparison, Lucy had meticulously unscrewed the bolts on her Pip-Boy, and was comparing the components of the two with interest.

Crazy how something from two centuries in the past was actually, maybe, a lot more sophisticated than her own gizmo, wasn't it?

Lucy had a few things waiting for her when she came in -- she'd check in with Jarvis, and see what the most efficient way to work through the projects might be.

In a second.

First, though, she had brought an inquiry to the gremlin -- a shy one, honestly, and intended as the first olive branch of a hopefully long friendship.

"What's your favorite drink to make?" Lucy asked, eyeing the various syrups and bottles at the kiosk with interest. "I'm new to all this."

And that was how Lucy learned about boba, which might be her new favorite thing on the whole island.

[open, slow due to annoying RL, and credit to the baristas of Reddit for the drink!]

The firehouse was all ready for guests, cleaned as much as humanly possible and organized within an inch of its life. Which meant it was time for people to come in and mess all that up.

But, you know. Lovingly.

And just across the way at Selkie Lake, the food and the general mingling place was all set up for people. Because it was time for the First Responder's Memorial Day Barbecue!

The sound system at the club was playing something jazzy, Tiny appeared to just be putting away clean glasses, and Octavia was behind the bar, googling wetsuits. All was right at the club!

Except of course that half the bottles behind the bar had been replaced with small traffic cones. Octavia did not know what that was about.

But she was assuming pure island nonsense.

Today, Lucy was actually doing something a little old-fashioned at work. Once she'd taken care of the repairs that needed doing, she was using her downtime to examine a couple of different large, folding paper maps she'd gotten.

You know, you're lied to about two hundred years of history, you can't really rely on your own previous knowledge of what the US of 2024 looked like, right? And while she'd figured out the island by foot pretty well, now, there was a whole bunch of land across that causeway. It would be silly to assume everything was like here.

[open if a little slow!]

So, first order of business: Lucy got herself a cappuccino, thank you Ignis, from the kiosk in the lobby, and made sure to leave a little extra for the little guy working the booth. (These things were, respectively, called a tip -- which she had heard of before -- and a gremlin, which she had decidedly not heard of before.)

Armed with coffee, she set to work familiarizing herself with the available tools they had, and what was already in stock as far as parts and repairs-to-be.

Stark Industries was open!

Lucy had had a strange day or so, yes -- but it had also been more than a little productive.

She was, apparently, over 250 years in the past, and in Maryland, and that was fine! That was totally fine. And it kind of was, too -- obviously, she (and the Ghoul) had gotten a little sidetracked from the whole hunting-down-Dad thing, and that wasn't great. But as far as places to get stuck...like, everyone here had been so kind, already? And the way they all knew she was new -- as someone who'd grown up in a very small, tight-knit community, it was...kind of really nice.

(Maybe a little suspicious. She'd still learned a lot, even if her first impulse was to allow herself to feel the warmth of that community spirit.)

In any case, Friday morning found her running a couple little errands -- she'd located the bank and changed her few caps over to even-fewer dollars, before taking another little walk around the island (and indulging in a little staring at the ocean, because that much water was still very new.) But, eventually, the idea of breakfast started to appeal even more than watching the water move.

It took a little doing, but the people behind the counter eventually helped her figure out she wanted just a plain coffee, and could add her own cream and sugar -- there were so many words on the menu in...Italian? -- and with her minimally-dressed coffee and an enormous cinnamon roll, Lucy settled down at a table, and turned her Pip-Boy to her radio to keep her company while she ate.

"-- don't [BEEP]-ing know, but they and their dog wandered into town and tried to figure out why everything wasn't terrible, ohhhh, so they're those kind of newbies! Fun! Welcome to the island, guys!"

And that was how Lucy learned that sometimes, the radio was about her.

...okey-dokey.

Another day, another...well, day. Jon was a bit tired and hungry, but he was leaving that for a tomorrow's problem so he'd be better able to cope on Saturday when the new students arrived.

So now he was trying to distract himself by deciding if the lobby needed a new coat of paint. He'd ordered chips from a place that swore they didn't mind doing business on Fandom, and was currently trying to tell the difference between "baby powder", "ivory", "seashell", and "parchment".

...maybe he'd go with a nice green or something.

Tony was going through the paperwork he'd been ignoring this past week with Steve out of town. Which was something Pepper would appreciate, but that was hardly the point.

"J, why is my signature on an internship here?"

JARVIS didn't respond, possibly pretending that the speakers in the shop were broken. And because he'd for sure forged that signature like a kid for a permission slip at school.

"This better not get strange," Tony sighed, putting it to the side for now.

This whole "let's pair up to get revenge on your shitty father" thing had started off so well. Minimal speaking, minimal danger, and absolutely no sidetracking bullshit. The Ghoul had, in fact, mostly kept his head down while walking in the general direction of Hank MacLean's bloody trail. Occasionally he'd kick a piece of trash up ahead of him for Dogmeat to chase.

At some point, however, he noticed that the trail was becoming less wasteland-y and more...well, more like he had remembered the world 200 years ago.

So. They were lost. Was he gonna mention this to Lucy? Nope. Let her figure it out for herself.
