First Responder's Memorial Day Barbecue - Fire Station and Selkie Lake, Monday

The firehouse was all ready for guests, cleaned as much as humanly possible and organized within an inch of its life. Which meant it was time for people to come in and mess all that up.

But, you know. Lovingly.

And just across the way at Selkie Lake, the food and the general mingling place was all set up for people. Because it was time for the First Responder's Memorial Day Barbecue!

"Hi, Stark."

The smile on her face appreciated being such an immediate point of interest.

"And nah," she answered. "Everyone's probably out here more than anything else. Which is a good thing for the clinic, too, unless things get real crazy, but, like, it's literally falling under the First Responders umbrella; if something happened and they weren't able to handle it themselves, that'd be pretty fucking abysmal. Have you been here long?"

Something would have to be very wrong for Stark to not head straight for Summer. He wasn't entirely sure on kissing protocols for public gatherings though so he was holding off on that for now.

"There are a lot of people here," Stark agreed. "Not everyone but a lot. ANd you're right. If something goes wrong there are plenty of people who can help and the nurses are still at the clinic and I told them I'd come back if they needed me."

He shook his head then. "Not too long, no. I was going to get some food soon, I think."

"I mean," Summer pointed out, "would be kind of silly to go to a barbecue and not get food. I could probably go for some right now, too. Shockingly, Apu wasn't even celebrating anything to make me totally just lose my appetite today."

"What was he celebrating?" Stark asked. "And would you like me to get you food? Steve is grilling."

Not Steve. Steve was off doing somber Memorial Day things. Steve was showing off his tramp stamp at the grill.

Excuse you, it was pronounced Steeeeeve.

"Memorial Day, actually," said Summer, shaking her head, because even having witnessed it firsthand, she still wasn't sure she believed it. "Like a total normie! Like, not even a word about cellophane tape or old timey pianos or anything! It was bizarre."

Her head tilted slightly as a thought occurred to her. "I wonder," she mused, "if he got bit by a gremlin? Anyway, let's just go and check out what they've got together?"

It was a win for both of them, because she knew Stark would appreciate her accompanying him and also she would appreciate the tramp stamp.

Both Steves were pronounced the same to Stark!

"Do you think I ought to go get Apu and take him to the clinic?" Stark asked, grinning. "And yes, together sounds good."

They could both appreciate the tramp stamp, lbr. Though Stark appreciated Summer's tattoo far more.

"Only if you think the nurses are really that bored," Summer said, with a faint grin back and a nudge of her shoulder against Stark's before turning to head on over to get some food, taking in a deep, appreciative breath at the scent of grilled meats in the air. "Other than that, I think he'll be fine, the man's probably had about a million gremlin bites in his time here."

"Maybe he's immune by now?" Stark suggested, leaning towards Summer a bit at that bump.

"Burgers? Steak? Something else? I'm glad you're here now. And you didn't miss the tug of war."

They could admire shirtless gentlemen together and then go home together. Perfect plan. No notes.

"I'm thinking a burger," Summer said, musing with a tilted head. "Easier to just eat with your hands, you know? Which seems a big part of the whole barbecue vibe. And you know, if he is immune, we should donate him to science, I know a gremlin venom vaccine or antidote was something that Barry was always trying to develop to, like, no avail. Have you ever been bitten? I can't remember if we've ever talked about it before..."

They'd known each other for a long time, actually, it could be easy to forget some of the smaller little details.

"Steak seems like something fancier," Stark agreed. Maybe because he almost never ate steaks. Maybe they ought to go to a steakhouse sometime?

"And no. No gremlin bites. The gremlins haven't bothered me. Just the raccoons. Did you see Steve got a tattoo?"
somethingwithturquoise: (doubtful summer is doubtful)

Re: Arrive/Mingle

Summer...had to lift an eyebrow a little at that, which seemed...a bit like a non-sequitur to her, and her attention shifted over to Steve and this tattoo that apparently was more interesting to Stark than the opportunity to go fishing for her own gremlin bite stories.

His loss, though. Her gremlin bite story was fucking great.

"Do you mean Steve?" she asked, with uncertainty. "Or Steeeeve?"

Because, like, Steve already had tattoos? And, like, yeah, it was very nice to look at his tattoos, like, in a way that she would have thought Stark should not be encouraging, because my god, but if Steeeeve got a tattoo, now, that would be news. Like, stop the pressed, drop everything, she'd need to know more.

In Stark's defense, Steve's tattoo was distracting and his mind didn't always work in straight lines. He'd come back around to the idea of gremlin bites in a minute, probably.

"Steve, not Steve." Nope, still no difference in pronounciation.

"There seem to be a lot of tattoos lately. Yours is much nicer." He reached then to ghost his fingers over it. "Much."

Pardon Summer for maybe looking a bit skeptical at tgat claim, what with Steve's tattoo being so distracting and all.

Still. She was willing to give him that one with a faint grin.

"Who else's tattoos have you been scoping out lately, Stark?"

"His is very large and noticeable," Stark pointed out, letting his hand rest very gently at the back of her neck. "Yours is much better. Promise."

"Will you tell me about your gremlin bite? They all seem different."
Maybe Baniks were immune! Doubtful but possible.

Oh, no, Stark. You didn't get to double back to a missed opportunity just because the narrative pointed it out.

"Oh, no," said Summer, innocently. "I wouldn't want to distract you from appreciating Steve's tattoo, Stark."
stykera: (sincere)

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[personal profile] stykera 2024-05-28 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't say I appreciated it I just said it was noticeable. And large. ANd that yours is much, much better."

Oh, Stark.

He shook his head and stepped in front of her, keeping his hand at her neck.

"Yours I appreciate. Just like I appreciate every other part of you."

And that's when Summer realized she may have gone just a bit too much over the edge of that thin line between giving Stark a hard time and giving Stark a bad time.

So she stopped and gave him a soft smile as she looked back at him.

"I know you do," she said, and leaned in to give him a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks, Stark."

Beat.

"Okay, now let's grab these burgers and find the best spot for noticing Steve's tattoo."

Look, just because she was at the line didn't mean she was going to stop dancing on it!
stykera: (awkward)

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[personal profile] stykera 2024-05-28 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Stark would expect nothing less than Summer dancing on that line. That she knew enough to take a half-step back meant everything to him, though.

"As long as Danny doesn't get too jealous," he said, giving her a crooked smile and dropping his hand from his neck to reach for her hand instead.

"And maybe later you'll tell me the story of your gremlin encounter?"

"I love you," Stark said with fond exasperation.

"Perhaps later I'll just have to distract you so you'll forget you didn't want to tell me."

He had some thoughts. They might have involved biting.
