Things Reborn, Friday

While straightening up the store, Harper accidentally knocked over an old chess set. After recovering all the pieces, she set up a chess game at the register with a sign:

50% off your highest price item if you can beat me at chess!

"I'll take a look after," Turtle decided with a nod. "There isn't anything I can think of that I need, but maybe if I look around, I'll feel inspired."

There was a long, long pause.

"Don't tell me," she said, "that the hats you have in mind are going to be like the hats from yesterday."

"No bright colors?" Turtle asked, especially since she couldn't argue about the hats. "At all?"

"If they want a bright color, though, can they have it?"

Turtle wrinkled her nose a little; her own dealings with Mister Tennant had been anything but reasonable, in her opinion, so she decided just to move on.

"So do you prefer black or white?" she asked.

"By all means," Turtle said, making an inviting gesture toward the board.

One of Turtle's pawns almost mirrored Harper's, only she'd only moved it one square.

"Really well," she said with a nod. "You should stop in more often; we always have really good sales going on."

"Except duct tape," Turtle pointed out, a natural disclaimer, as she looked at the board and then moved a bishop into the spot previously occupied by her pawn. "And you....do a lot of your own designing, right?"

"Are they really tiny?" Turtle wondered, nudging forward one of her pawns, as well. "I mean, because that seems kind of...big to be hanging from your ears."

She held out her thumb and her forefinger, trying to measure out the approximate size of the average plastic soldier.
