Beach; Sunday Afternoon

Luke was new to town, but that didn't mean he was going to let not knowing how things work around here stop him from his usual activities. It was Fourth of July and there were two things you should do on that day: Watch that movie with Will Smith in it and light some sparklers on fire. He had already done the former and, now that it was getting dark, it was time to blow up shiny things.

He had found a spot on the beach where he wouldn't burn anything down, made a bonfire and then snapped up whatever fireworks he could think of. Sparklers, Roman Candles, Wheels, Snakes, Parachutes, and even some of the bigger ones that may have been less than legal in this country (he was debating on whether or not he'd light those). Truly a pyromaniac's dream come true.

Luke snapped up some burgers and sodas and he was ready to celebrate July 4th in style.

"That'd do it," Peter said. "The new-kid sheen doesn't wear off until the next batch of kids arrive. Or so I understand. I guess it means that I have you to thank for me no longer qualifying as one."

"Yeah, I can get that," Luke said. "It was sort of my job at my old--uh, I guess it was a school--to welcome the new kids. I'm like an expert."

"You guess it was a school?" Peter asked, intrigued. "Now, feel free to tell me I'm prying, but what else would it have been?"

"Technically it was a camp. A summer camp, but I stayed all year round," Luke said. "They taught you stuff, so I'm calling it a school."

"Yeah, when a summer camp becomes a full time gig, I think it's no longer a summer camp," Peter said. "Must have been one hell of a camp."

"Well, for a summer school program, this place is a lot more than campfires and pottery, too," Peter said. "So what made you decide to change educational plans?"

"Just wanted a change of scenery," Luke said. That was sort of the truth. "I've been at this camp since I was nine, decided to try something new."

"Nine?" Peter said, unable to tone down the shock in his voice. "You were at a summer camp since you were nine. That's... I don't even have words for that."

Luke didn't much like someone judging Camp Half-Blood, considering that was often the only place demigods could go to be safe, but he understood that the average person wouldn't know anything about that.

"My mom's gone," Luke said, deciding to leave what "gone" meant to Peter's interpretation. "And my dad's not in the picture. So the people that run the camp let me stay there year-round. It's not that bad."

And that explained it, as far as Peter stood. He nodded. "Nice of the camp to do that," he said. "Sorry to hear that that sort of thing was necessary, though." His voice was sincere. "Hopefully this place will be just as nice for you. Peculiarities aside."
