The Park, Thursday evening

Leia sat on a bench near the pond, idly throwing breadcrumbs for the ducks. She'd dreamed of her mother again that morning, mostly vague impressions of her face, an echo of her voice. It should've been impossible for her to have memories of her mother, but somehow she did. The holos Luke had shown her also flitted through her dreams, and she saw Padmé young and happy, and also quiet and determined. She kept hearing the voice saying if you dream them, they will come. Was it really possible? She'd just wait here and see.

Padmé had forgotten just how infuriating her husband had been and was taking some time to cool down by taking a nice long walk around the island.

She stopped abruptly when she saw the small figure by the pond. It was someone else who had been reaching out for her--blood calling to blood across time, space and possibilities.

"Leia," she breathed.

Leia jumped to her feet and spun around. Words caught in her throat as she stared at Padme, and she finally forced one out. "Mother?"

Tears filled Padmé's eyes. "Oh, my beautiful girl," she whispered, walking closer.

"It worked," Leia whispered, barely able to breath. "Are you really here? Or is this a dream?"

"I'm really here," Padmé said, reaching out to touch her daughter's cheek. "How long that will be true, I cannot say."

Leia put her hand over her mother's, reassuring herself she wasn't just some insubstantial ghost. "I don't know or care how," she said, tears filling her own eyes now. "I'm just glad you're here."

"Oh, my Leia," Padmé murmured, leaning in to hug her, "I've wanted to do this for so long."

Leia hugged her mother fiercely, afraid to let go. "I found my father here, but I never thought I'd be so lucky to find my mother, too," she wept. "I have so many things I've wanted to ask you. And Luke! I have to tell Luke so he can come meet you, too!"

"I can see Luke too?" Padmé said, smiling through her own tears. "This is truly a great gift. She reached out to wipe Leia's tears. "I have so much to ask you as well. Are you happy?"

"He's back in our own galaxy," Leia said. "He's not exactly my Luke, he's older than me because he's from the future in an alternate timeline, and I haven't met my Luke yet but I know he's on Tatooine and General Kenobi is protecting him."

Breathe, Leia, breathe. She drew in a deep breath to try to regain her composure. "I've had a good life. Bail Organa and Queen Breha raised me like I was their own daughter. But the galaxy is in an awful shape, and I want to be like you and become a senator and change things."

Padmé closed her eyes for a second and took a deep breath. "You are so much like me," she murmured, a mix of pride and sorrow in her voice. "I'd hoped for something less complicated for your life."

"I don't want it to be less complicated," Leia said, shaking her head. "I want to make a difference! Palpatine has to be stopped!"

Padmé smiled at her. "And of course you'll help lead the charge. You're my daughter. You won't be happy sitting on the sidelines. Without knowing it, I was fighting him my entire life."

"Your life should've been longer," Leia said brokenly, tears coming again. "If I could go back in time and change things, I would."

"Oh, sweetheart, don't waste time with tears," Padmé murmured. "What happened, happened. You grew up with Bail? He was a dear friend in our time in the Senate."

"He told me a lot about you when I was growing up," Leia said, wiping her eyes. "I admired you a lot. But he never told me you were my mother, not until I asked him. Father wouldn't tell me your name -- have you seen him yet?"

Padmé's lips thinned into an irritated look Leia would probably find eerily familiar. "I've seen him. He's just as he's always been--brash and irritating and stubborn and convinced he's right." She smiled sheepishly. "I've missed it."

Leia couldn't help but laugh. "How did you put up with him?" she said. "There are times when I just want to kill him."

"It helps that I didn't see him for months at a time," Padmé said teasingly. "It wears the sharp edges off of things." She sobered. "But when he walked into a room, he was the only thing I could see. He was more alive than any person I ever knew, and he said exactly what he thought. I was groomed for politics from the time I was a very young girl--I thought five times before opening my mouth. He was a force of nature. I could no sooner stop him than I could stop the sun from rising."

"You should see how he gets whenever I'm near a boy," Leia grinned. "The sulking and the scowling is something to behold."

Padmé burst out laughing. "Oh, I'm certain he's insufferable. He didn't like Bail and by then he and I had been married for years. I think he was jealous of Obi-Wan, too." She leaned closer. "Is there a special boy?"

"No one serious," Leia said, "but there is Christian, who looks exactly like Obi-Wan did when he was younger." Before the beard and all. On his face, not Duchess Satine.

Padmé's smile grew. "You have excellent taste," she said. "I met Obi-Wan for the first time when I was fourteen. He was very handsome."

"Oh, he is," Leia grinned. "But I'm not looking for anything serious because I know I have to go home, and the rebellion is going to be my focus. I know I get married in the future, though -- and you're a grandmother! You have to see Jaina when you're here, and Ben. Jaina is my future daughter and Ben is Luke's son. I know it sounds crazy" -- no less crazy than talking to your dead mother, Leia -- "but this place has brought us all together, and now it's brought us you."

"I have grandchildren?" Padmé stammered, looking truly taken aback.
