The Park, Thursday evening

Leia sat on a bench near the pond, idly throwing breadcrumbs for the ducks. She'd dreamed of her mother again that morning, mostly vague impressions of her face, an echo of her voice. It should've been impossible for her to have memories of her mother, but somehow she did. The holos Luke had shown her also flitted through her dreams, and she saw Padmé young and happy, and also quiet and determined. She kept hearing the voice saying if you dream them, they will come. Was it really possible? She'd just wait here and see.

Padmé was completely unsurprised to hear that, and sent warm wishes toward Obi-Wan and Bail for arranging matters that way.

"Even with all of our technology, complications happen during childbirth," she said carefully. "I don't really remember the specifics."

She sighed and reached for Leia's hand. "You need to remember that your father was raised by the Jedi," she said, "where emotions--especially strong, negative ones--were something to be repressed and discarded, not discussed." Her lips quirked up. "Anakin was always easier to read than most of them--I believe they got so used to checking in the Force for emotions they stopped looking at his eyes--but he is never going to be one to admit that he's hurt, especially when he is. He was back on the front lines weeks after losing an arm, and he thinks of emotional injuries as much less important."

Padmé knew more about her husband than her husband knew about himself.

"You and Luke will both be Jedi?" Padmé looked a little conflicted about that.

"Why is Bail no longer in the Senate?" Padmé asked, chewing on her lower lip.

Padmé looked stricken. "I am very sorry to hear that," she murmured. "Palpatine is not to be underestimated. I watched him declare the birth of the Empire to thunderous applause in the Senate."

Oh, Ani, what have you done? Padmé thought sadly. She gripped her daughter's hands tightly. "You have inherited more stubbornness than you should have--I blame your father for it--and it would be the height of hypocrisy for me to tell you to back off from a fight or put your life in more regard than those of the people you represent, but promise me you'll be smart about this."

"Have you thought of body doubles?" Padmé asked. "They won't confuse Palpatine or...Vader," her voice stumbled slightly over that, "for long, but they might buy you some time."

Padmé smiled. "I was elected queen," she said, "but I'm sure you do fine."

"You'll do both positions well," Padmé said, "as long as you stay true to yourself. Opinions and trends--especially in the Senate--change like the weather on Coruscant. Trust yourself." Her brown eyes sparkled. "I didn't have the Force as an ally and I did fine. You shall do much more."

Padmé saw in her daughter's eyes the same uncertainty that had filled Anakin's when he'd told her of his visions of the future. "You cannot be afraid to live your own life," she said steadily. "And different isn't necessarily bad."

"From what I learned spending time with Jedi," Padmé said, "major events that are meant to be, will be. Don't second guess yourself, dearest. Your decisions will lead to the correct outcome."

"You already do," Padmé said.
