The Park, Monday Evening

Some would rejoice, others would cry, and a good chunk of Fandom's population would probably wind up with mixed feelings. This portal had brought the children onto the island but two nights ago, and now it had reversed the polarity of the neutron flow returned to take them back.

It floated calmly in the middle of the park's clearing, exuding a soft yellow light. It wouldn't steer the children wrong.

Say your goodbyes, Fandom... for the year.

"Mommy always gets extra kisses," Sylvie declared. "An' she'll get super extra extra kisses when I'm home again. An' Daddy, too."

"And Daddy, too," Rinoa said with a nod. "Okay, sweetheart. I love you. I'll see you again real soon, okay?"

Some other Rinoa would. She wouldn't ... maybe for years, and maybe not ever. She had the sudden impulse to just ... grab the girl and run for it. Keep her, and never give her back. Ever.

She fought it down, swallowing past a lump, and pulled Sylvie in for one last hug, instead.

"Okay," said Sylvie, nodding a few times and hugging back. "I love you, too."

She didn't know why this was sad, for Mommy. But she was going to squeeze extra-tight and give her a big, big kiss.

And then, Sylvie was going to bounce her way over the portal, give a huge, huge wave, and jump through it.

Rinoa was going to be very, very happy that she'd held back from openly crying until after Sylvie left.

And maybe she'd kneel here on the ground until she could stop crying and regain her composure.

The world seemed like it was missing a little, much-needed burst of warmth.
