The Park [Friday night after dark]

Ben had found a giant movie screen...somewhere...and had set it up in the park along with rickshaws and cardboard boxes decorated to look like cars. (On a carless island, you improvised when you'd decided you wanted a drive-in movie experience).

There was also burgers, shakes, fries and other drive-in food for those who were coming to see the cinematic classic that was ~~Fast and Furious~~ Quick and Angry 6: This Time We Have a Tank!

The weather was cooperating tonight, so the sky was clear. Come on out for a movie before the newbies arrive!

Ben groaned. "Fine."

Ender smiled. He shook his head. "So," he said, "Did you get Karla's recordings as well?"

"Yes," Ben said, shaking his head and grinning.

"I don't know how she manages to make even a cut-throat election sound like a farce," Ender replied, shaking his head as well.

"It's a special Karla gift," Ben replied. "She would have loved to see this."

"She does enjoy her car movies," Ender said a little dryly. "But I guess that means the easy part is over."

"As long as she keeps checking in, I don't care how flippant her messages are," Ben said.

"I'm not sure what to make of it," Ender said. "She's scared."

Ben nodded. "She's smart enough to know what a tightrope she's walking."

"So she puts on a brave face and bluffs her way in."

Ben smiled. "Well, Karla. It's not so different from what I'd do if all eyes were on me."

"You'd be more belligerent about it," Ender judged. "You'd wave a stick around and shout 'hey, Hobart, over here! Egg on your face!'"

Ben smiled. "Well, yeah, but I also have--had--a lightsaber."

"A lightsaber against a room full of Blood," Ender said. "That would have been interesting-- for about ten seconds."

"And then I would have left quite happily and in one piece?" Ben tried.

"If that's what you'd like to believe."

"Either that or I'd have a dashing scar somewhere."

Dream on, Ben.

"Sure you would," Ender said patiently.
