Evan... didn't want to go back.

He'd kind of forgotten just how easily this place could become home, and he'd known but he'd never fully realized just how much people hated... not just him, but everyone like him, back in his own world. He hadn't lasted long there before, when he'd been sent here to give him a chance to sort of breathe, and then he'd been called back, and...

He reached for a stick and threw it, and a dog and a small dinosaur both went racing off after it.

It wasn't just that he was hated, though. He was lonely. He missed his friends. He missed... he missed a lot of people.

Maybe if he just played here a little longer, and pretended as though everything was going to stay just like this forever, and ignored it, it would go away on its own.

"It's not, is it? Going to just fix itself?"

That was meant to be kind of rhetorical.

Like so many weekends before it, the calm of a September Saturday morning was interrupted by the unscheduled opening of a portal in the park. This one sprang to life in a blaze of blue and gold and a burst of glitter before settling into something more stable.

The first to flood out were a score of squirrels, followed by some alots, a few teal deer, and some gremlins who had left Fandom to seek their fortune through biting. Then humans, humanoids, and those we never asked about too closely came through the portal.

Welcome back to Fandom, alums! Even if you hadn't planned on being here this weekend!

Evan frowned as he stared at the letter in his hands, turning it over once, twice. It was addressed to him from the headmaster of the Jean Grey School, and he'd gotten it this morning, much to his chagrin.

He still hadn't opened the envelope. He was maybe putting that off, a little.

So, over the course of the day, the letter had been tucked into Evan's pocket and pulled out again two, three, fifteen times. He still didn't have it in him to read it. He was pointedly ignoring anything that came courtesy of Logan, after the whole Savage Lands... thing.

Even if it was stamped 'urgent.' Even if the longer he put off opening it, the more he felt awful about it.

Even if all those things.

There were books to put away. Evan was going to do that, instead.

Evan was antsy today at the Book Haven for reasons he couldn't quite put a finger on. It felt like there was something lingering just over the horizon that was ominous, imposing... heavy, somehow. Like it was lurking just around the corner, watching, waiting...

It took him until about noon to realize that he was experiencing the feeling because a handful of the books were actually physically creeping up behind him, and that was the moment they chose to strike. Or, rather, to fall on him from a bookshelf overhead, trying to pin him down to make him read a horror novel he'd put back the other week because it was just a little bit too violent for his tastes.

Books.

So, it was completely possible that Evan had managed to absolutely miss that anything weird had happened on the island at all. Sure, the weather had been a bit gross, and the clouds overhead had left everything looking a bit more washed out than usual, but just outright weird? Nah.

Of course, he'd kept mostly to himself over the weekend, reading a stack of classic murder mysteries in the company of his dog and his dinosaur, and only really left the room to take the animals for walkies. Apparently whoever it was who had been smoking inside all weekend had moved on, and things seemed to be a lot more lush than they had been on Saturday and Sunday, so what reason did he have to complain?

Humming a little to himself, Evan got to work stocking shelves and poking through more of those classic crime books to see if anything else could catch his imagination today.

Evan had come in to work today expecting some sort of crazy. It always sort of seemed like a safe bet, after all, that where there was books around here, there would often be chaos. It was just that sometimes the chaos was a little less blatant than others.

It wasn't until the fifth book he'd turned right-side-up on the shelves that he figured out today's madness of choice.

"Really, books?"

Another book shimmied out of its place on the shelf, flipped itself around in mid-air, and then tucked itself neatly away in reply.

It was going to be another one of those days.

Eleanor was absolutely not nervous as the entered the animal shelter. There was no reason to be nervous. She was just accompanying Evan -- and his puppy and his tiny dinosaur -- while he bought some pet food. There was nothing significant or momentous about today in the slightest, because she herself was just going to go into the animal shelter, not actually pick out a pet for herself. Besides, it was ludicrous to just pick up another living creature and swear to love and protect it for the rest of its natural life. People didn't actually do that, did they?

Do not mind the fidgeting, Evan (or Ozzy or Old Lace).

At least the food section wasn't too intimidating, although you could easily overhear the barks and mews from the back.

"I thought cats ate mice," she said, idly, because saying something was preferable to not saying anything at all.

Evan had been all prepared to come into work at the bookstore, which more often than not was at least somewhat more sane for him than his Sunday library shifts tended to be.

Except, quite the opposite of his time at the library on Sunday, today there wasn't a single pop-up book to be seen. Anywhere. And NPC parents kept coming in with their children, asking if they had any. The best that he could do was apologize profusely, and then offer to either place an order, or suggest they check out the school library. They had plenty of pop-up books there.

He was kind of wondering if perhaps these two things were related by way of some sort of shipping error, or if it was just another case of the island messing with him.

Some days, it was hard to tell.

Hands! Evan had hands again! It had happened with little fanfare and in the most boring way possible, which suited him just fine. He'd gone to sleep last night curled up under his nice cozy bedsheets with OL and Ozzy at the foot of his bed sleeping the way normal dogs and dinosaurs do, and he'd woken up this morning, naked but at least covered, completely back to normal.

Having stretchy arms meant that he hadn't even had to worry about trying to get his pants from across the room without potentially losing his bedsheet in front of his roomie.

So he was finally back to work, feeling much better in his old skin and quite happily embracing everything from opposable thumbs to actually being kind of tall for his age to not being a dog, all while dusting the bookshelves and making certain that everything was in proper working order.

Old Lace was there too, entertaining herself with an empty box that a new shipment had arrived in. Evan would tell anybody around that she was just helping him with his job by breaking the box down for recycling later, but to the untrained eye, it probably just looked more like she was chewing it to bits. An easy mistake to make, yes.

Um.

So much of Evan's reactions to things lately could be summed up with 'um,' it seemed. Today's 'um' was the island's latest bout of bookstore mischief, because he'd nearly had to chase a few getaway books out the door when he opened it this morning for the start of his shift.

He wasn't going to ask why some of the books had been outfitted with wheels, or where they were trying to go. He was just going to attempt to corral them into a little paddock he'd fashioned out of some overturned chairs and empty spare shelving, until he could figure out what else he could possibly do with them.

... Maybe race them.

Evan was having another conundrum at the Book Haven today. He wanted to put out as many books from the new shipment as possible, of course. But the fact that every book on the shelves had apparently changed language magically overnight was making that difficult. Logically, he knew that the cookbooks were over there, but he certainly couldn't read Chinese or Cyrillic and he didn't even know if the same forces that had changed the books had alphabetized them, anyway. Was there even an alphabetization system for pictograms? Would it be a faux-pas of some sort to put the new shipment, which was in English, out amongst all of the other apparently haphazard assorted books in the wild?

Most of Evan's morning, admittedly, was spent just looking helplessly between the new books and the old, absolutely puzzled.

The rest of it was spent making a display consisting of just the new books, because why spread the English language texts around the store where people would have a heck of a time finding them, anyway? He was all for multiculturalism and such, but whatever this was seemed a touch counter-intuitive.

Okay, so perhaps Evan hadn't thought through this 'being employed and having a telepathic dinosaur' thing very well. Not that he'd really planned for this, granted. Old Lace and Ozzy had gotten along fairly well on Sunday, when he'd left them alone together in his room for his library shift, but Old Lace had looked kind of pathetic when he came back to his room afterward. And, well, she had huge eyes. He was quickly learning that his dinosaur gave better puppy eyes than his dog did.

So today, he was trying something a little different. Ozzy stayed behind again, and Old Lace came along with him, under the strict understanding that she would behave herself until lunch time, when he'd take her for a walk to get some exercise or something. She seemed amenable to that (or at least that's what Evan had gathered from the look on her face), and she'd come along with him to work.

Today at the Book Haven, Evan was putting out a display of dinosaur books. Old Lace was helping. If, by helping, one meant she was sitting and watching curiously, occasionally snorting whenever she spotted a cover that caught her interest.

So far, so good!

What a drab, miserable day it was out there. Evan frowned out the window as he straightened out the books, watching the rain drizzle against the bookstore windows. It kind of set a mood, didn't it? People graduated on the weekend, and there were only a handful that Evan really knew well, but with weather like that, it was kind of like the island was mourning over the people who were leaving.

... Or maybe he was looking too far into this. Weather was really only weather, after all. Unless Storm was involved somehow. Which, of course, she wasn't.

Shrugging, Evan got back to straightening the books, and then dusting around the shop, wondering to himself about who was leaving, what sort of people might come to the island next weekend, and where in the world Sholeh had been hiding for the past week, now.

It was actually a pleasantly laid-back shift today at the Book Haven. Sure, there was a new shipment of cookbooks in today for Evan to go through, but there were no huge mix-ups tucked away in there. He didn't open any boxes to see nearly eighty of the same novel, and while cookbooks weren't exactly light, it wasn't as though they were difficult to sort.

And maybe he was occasionally stopping to see if he could find any recipes that he could recognize. Just because his Ma's cooking was never real didn't mean he didn't miss it.

Evan was poking through the self-help books as he put the new stock away today. Not for anything specific, really. Maybe some books on anger management. Maybe some books on goal-setting.

What he really wanted was something with a title like, 'So You Don't Want to Grow Up to Be a Homicidal Psychopath,' but that seemed a little too specific.

Still, if there was any place that had it, a bookstore on the island was probably that place.

He wasn't even sure if he was allowed to sign for things. But apparently his signature was good enough for the delivery guy, so he was going to just go with it for as long as he could manage, and hopefully Rosalind would show up again, safe and sound, sometime soon.

Evan was better rested today than he'd been since coming back from vacation, which really didn't say much at all. He still looked tired - he even slept poorly on the spring trip, up all night staring at ceilings, thinking to himself - but he'd had a warm bed last night in a hotel room, and his things seemed to all still be in order when he woke up in the morning, so that was one less thing to worry about today.

Besides that, he was starting to get a little concerned about where Rosalind had gone. It wasn't that he didn't think she could take care of herself, but she just kind of fell out of touch with her employees all at once, out of nowhere, and she really didn't seem like the type.

He was frowning as he put out a new shipment of books, wondering if maybe he should make the next order himself, since it didn't look like Rosalind had been in to put the order in this week at all.

Weird.

Okay, today, Evan came into the Book Haven expecting the worst. Mumbles and whispers and memories and all sorts of nasty things just lingering around him in the air to be heard when he least expected it. And he started to put out new books and straighten shelves with that thought in mind.

Around the time he came back from his early lunch (he went to class rather than eat, these days, because he really hadn't thought out his class schedule that well this semester at all), he was almost - almost convinced that today he was going to get off totally free.

He was still paranoid, though. The second he let his guard down, that would be when the island would decide to mess with him.

Evan was burying his face in a book today at the Book Haven, and he wasn't coming out for anything. Not for restocking the shelves. Not for anything.

Normally, he'd be in the best place in town in order to deal with emotional traumas, but today his first few steps into the bookstore had been accompanied, out of nowhere, with the face of someone he'd lost almost a year ago, standing on the other side of the room with a baseball glove on his hand.

"So, this En Sabah Nur, he was the first mutant on Earth," Cluster caught the ball that was thrown toward him from... Evan couldn't imagine where, but it seemed to be coming from himself. "As such, he was selected by the Celestials to become Apocalypse, charged with ensuring the success of humanity's new mutations. Ensuring they would flourish, and become the dominant species."

Cluster threw the ball again, and the vision vanished. But for the rest of his shift, whenever Evan dared to look up, he could hear the rest of the conversation, in fits and starts.

Only the monster was still just a boy.

Evan had never been so absorbed in a book about vegan recipes in his life.

Another Tuesday, another shift at the Book Haven. Today, Evan was going through the books and contemplating putting out a display here for the new residents of the island. The topic of choice? Books teaching survival skills.

Evan wasn't completely certain how to go about readying the store on New Year's Eve, really. Should he just open as usual? Close out early since people were probably going to want to party or something later? Put up a display of some sort?

He eventually settled on that last option, printing out a sign from the work computer and pulling some classics from the shelves, arranging them neatly on a table by the front door.

This time Drac had heard the radio announcement and he was not best pleased at being threatened. He'd been through this already and definitely knew what to do...

Grab Mavis and run away.

Only, this time there were more monsters here that he worried about. And apparently they were out there in the streets, fighting. That was insane! Right. Well, then. Time to go get everyone. And if they didn't want to get away and be safe... there was always the option to hypnotize them. Someone in this town had to show they cared about them, after all.

So now Drac was walking the streets, a very grumpy modded Mavis tailing behind him, and collecting various students and other fellow monsters. He figured he could take them back to the hotel and contact their families from there.

Evan actually kind of felt wrong about coming in to work today, given just how weird things were out there. Opening the bookstore seemed, to him, like a statement that translated to, 'The island is up to weird things and there are sketchy people out there. Buy books!'

Which... made for odd priorities, even for him.

Still, he was in for his shift today, going through new stock and putting it out on the shelves. That he kept looking toward the window to make certain the streets weren't on fire or something probably said volumes about just how into it his head really was, though.

Either way, today he was back to work, going through the children's section and picking out a few of the titles that he'd enjoyed the most while working at the library on Sunday. They were going straight onto the 'Staff Picks' wall, with a little sign under them saying that they'd be excellent to have around if people here turned into kids again, or if they just happened to have little children show up. And now, because he was curious, he was looking up what books were coming out soon on the internet. New Pratchett was on the way, and new Robert Jordan, and...

... Mostly a bunch of kinda iffy-looking romance novels and some cookbooks. Evan tilted his head at the selection, and then made a note to just keep an eye out for the books he was interested in when they were finally released. Ah, another Tuesday, another shift at the Book Haven, and Evan was a little bit of a kid in a candy store as he shelved today's new releases. He wasn't terribly interested in the new Danielle Steele book (did people even read that stuff?) and the children's book with the pig on the cover declaring that he was a frog didn't hold his interest for long, either. But there was a new biography on Johnny Cash that he had to flip through on principle, and one about the girl who was hurt by the Taliban for speaking out for education, and another book with really amusing looking stick-figures on the cover that Evan couldn't just put on the shelf without reading through first.

He had a small stack of books set aside by the time he was done doing his daily duties around the shop, and if anyone asked, he was reading through them so that he could properly recommend them to any customers that might wander into the store. Honest. It was part of his job as a bookstore clerk, after all.

There were a lot of things that Rosalind was trying not to dwell on approximately a day and a half into her return to the island. How she'd gotten there was high up on that list. Higher still was the situation that she'd left behind. Between those two things was the nagging concern of how her coworkers were reacting and what was going on and the feeling that if she thought too much about it all, while stranded on the island, she would drive herself mad in short order.

That thought occasioned another glower at her phone, even as she picked it up to try and get a call through. She got nothing. Again. Portalocity was very sorry but very firm that there was no way for her to get a message back home.

Rosalind blamed the island. Heartily. And resolved to not think about it again. At least she'd gotten a chance to sleep some and clean herself up so that she was looking presentable.

She had plenty to think about in the meantime, since being back, and not as a student, meant she needed some way to keep herself from getting bored. (More honestly, she needed something to do to give her the busy work to take her mind off the inaccessibility of Gaia, but self-deception was a time honoured Turk tradition.) Money wasn't really a problem, since she could access that, which irked her when nothing else worked, but keeping busy was a necessity.

(Though she did wonder of Tseng would notice the activity in her account. And, if he did, what he would do about it.)

Running a shop probably wasn't what most people did to keep themselves distracted. Taking one over was probably not on any list of how to deal with things.

Nonetheless, armed with the largest coffee the Perk sold, a table all to herself, and all the paperwork required to get Book Haven back in running order, under her name, together worked out to an afternoon that was peaceful so long as she didn't think about those things that… she wasn't thinking about.

And, as Evan walked down Unicorn Street, it seemed more and more like it could even be a good evening for sitting at one of the little tables outside of the Perk, sipping a coffee and reading while Ozzy napped at his feet.

It was good to see that the best laid plans sometimes did work out nicely, because ten minutes later he had himself a mocha frappuccino, and was a few pages in on one of the books he'd taken out from the library while Ozzy settled himself down on the cobblestones, content to rest for a while.

She'd think it was one more way of hazing the newbies, but everything else she'd dismissed as a hoax was turning out to be true.

Also, it was hot and sticky as balls out here. Well, metaphorical balls. She presumed. Maybe hot and sticky as the underside of boobs? You know, this metaphor wasn't going anywhere good. Probably a sign of incipient heatstroke. Kathy wasn't sure what she'd been thinking, walking into town like this. She probably should have just gone back to her dorm and started looking up airfare prices home. Nice, safe, boring, overprotective home.

So that's what they were doing. Running. Practicing tracking and shutting out other distractions. Why they were doing it shirtless, Jack wasn't entirely sure -- but it was hardly something to complain about.

He leaned forward into his run, trying to match or exceed Derek's pace. Something about this had his competitive juices flowing.

Well, this was it. Opening night, and Jono had done about all of the running around that he could manage. His props girl had apparently vanished into the ether, his set was mostly painted in a shade of red-with-glitter that meant that he needed to be extremely careful how he lit the bloody thing, he'd drastically shorted himself on rehearsal time, though it seemed as though his cast had stepped up to the occasion and made up for that oversight, and--

Jono looked like he was going to pass out as he made one last check on the state of the stage before opening the house.

-- And there were occasionally waffles raining down from... apparently the catwalks above the stage.

Lovely.

"The show is going to bloody well go on if it kills me," he growled, and then doubled back to grab a broom before going to open the doors.

Spring break was nearly over, and, while Evan really hadn't intended to, he'd certainly managed to convince Vice-Principal McCoy that he was better off on Fandom Island than he probably was back there, at the Jean Grey School. Dr. McCoy had decided not to hold against Fandom the fact that it didn't offer Evan a mutant-specific education, surrounded by people that were like him.

In that other school, Evan was fairly certain there weren't other people like him. Not really.

Once he'd gotten back to the island, he'd dropped the few things that he'd packed off in his room (including the books that Wade had gotten him. Those wound up stuffed into his sock drawer, about as far back as he could get them), had put Ozzy's leash on, and had set out to the park to take him for a walk. He needed the air, and some familiar surroundings to remind him that the world kept spinning.

The company of an enthusiastic puppy didn't hurt much, either.

So, it was a date. Like, two people spending time together because they maybe kinda like spending time together and want to get to know one another better so that they can spend more time together, date. Evan had picked Sholeh up after his shift at the library, and they had started the evening with the mandatory run to the bookstore, because what better way was there to spend a date than book shopping?

And then they had set off to have dinner, which would have been an easy walk from the bookstore. Really. It should have been. But Sholeh had smiled and Evan had stopped paying attention to anything resembling what direction they were going... so instead of ending up at Café Fina, they'd found themselves on completely the other side of the island, a fact that Evan only became dimly aware of as he realized he was actually in a part of town he never went to.

"... I don't suppose you're in the mood for pasta tonight?"

[OOC: For the girl! But open place in town is open for other pasta lovers too, of course.]

After an hour or so of perusing the bookstore, Sholeh and Evan made their way to Chilly Boulder to finish celebrating Evan's birthday. Sure, it was very cold out today, but the lure of ice cream was too much to deny. Especially with Evan bringing along some of the brownies to add to their sundaes.

Taking a table for three near the window (their combined stack of books got the other chair), Sholeh turned to Evan and asked, "So, enjoying your birthday so far?"

She really, really hoped the answer was yes.

There was one thing to be said for having a pet dog, and that was that it was pretty impossible to just rot away with books in one's room and surface only for classes and work if you happened to be a kid like Evan who was pretty content to do exactly that. Ozzy, unlike his pet mutant, was quite the go-getter, and sometimes he didn't feel up to little things like going back home after his afternoon walk was through.

And that was why Evan was standing on the shoreline of the pond, trying to coax a stubby-legged husky cross out from the water, to little avail.

"Come on, boy," he pleaded, holding a well-loved tennis ball in the air and waving it about enticingly. "It's way too cold for swimming and I'm not going in after you. Don't make me reach!"

Ozzy was having none of it. There were ducks in the pond that clearly needed a good barking at.

So, somehow, Karla had managed to talk Priestly into loaning out his kitchen to anyone who wanted to help make food for tomorrow's Thanksgiving feast. She still wasn't sure how she'd managed that, considering Priestly's odd reluctance to trust her in the kitchen, but she wasn't going to look the gift chef in...the...uhh, oven?

Okay, that metaphor had gotten away from her a little. Whatever. They still had a kitchen to work with and an amazing freezer that had every ingredient imaginable AND a tram. Between that and Karla to oversee everything, there was no way that this Thanksgiving meal wouldn't turn out amazingly.

...Specifically since Priestly had tapped his cook to actually oversee the kitchen. And several members of StuCo had also planned to keep Karla from interfering too much.

Either way, there was plenty of cooking to do if anyone was interested in helping!

It was open mic night at the Perk, and Victor Mancha -- international singing sensation whose warm smile hid a crippling history of vocal amnesia -- was ready to take the stage. The coffee shop was a bit smaller than the stadiums he normally played, but he liked the intimate setting as a way to connect with and thank his island fans.

It also saved the producers the cost of building another set.

He stepped onto the small stage that maybe hadn't ever been there before and sat down on a stool, cradling an acoustic guitar, then smiled with endearing shyness at the audience. (At least, he hoped it was endearing. He spent a lot of time on that expression.)

"Welcome to my homecoming show," he said. "This is for all of you lovers out there."

And then he plucked a few chords and began to sing.

It was somehow even more glittery than it had been earlier in the evening, though there was still time for any latecomers to show before the moment you'd all been waiting for.

Glitter seemed to be a theme of the evening. There was glitter on the posters covering the walls, glitter on the plants printed on table cloths. Glitter on the fake full moon hanging in place of a mirror ball.

And of course, glitter on the banner hanging above the entrance.

Welcome to Homecoming 2012

Well, yesterday had been a big day full of catching up with loved ones, but today there were real activities planned! Although it had drizzled a bit the night before, by now the grass was dry and ready to be socialized on, almost as if Fandom knew that Student Council hadn't thought through a Plan B in case of rain and had decided to make things easier on them. The island was thoughtful that way. Now it was sunny and warm, and probably the best weather they'd had in a few weeks. You're welcome, parents.

Even if any of the guests had somehow been deliberately shielded from missed the signs about the field day in the park today, it was pretty easy to spot, what with all the brightly colored flags marking different stations, the big stage with a karaoke machine set up, the probably-larger-than-necessary buckets of station-specific equipment like balls and water balloons, and, of course, the picnic benches and food tables for anyone who just wanted to watch. Everything was perfect, assuming that whoever had commandeered the karaoke machine wasn't completely awful, so hopefully all the families would have a good time!

It was a warm, sunny, beautiful day here in Fandom, and look at how much it wasn't raining anything weird. You're welcome, parents, friends, assorted guests and fair citizens of Fandom who didn't want to explain that sort of thing right off the bat.

There was food to be enjoyed, picnic tables so people could sit, and decorations that were very heavy on the blue and gold. Also, probably more glitter than was reasonable for a picnic. There were Student Council traditions to uphold.

WELCOME TO PARENTS' WEEKEND 2012!

Well, Evan had himself a puppy, and puppies needed to go for walks. That much really was a given, so far as these things went, and had been since Evan had gotten Ozzy in the first place.

He had also, somewhere over the course of the night, somehow managed to inherit a talking swan. A really, really big one. But he was not going to let this get in the way of walkies, darn it. It just meant... well, really, it mostly just meant that he'd be lingering around the park a little longer than usual while the swan calmly paddled in little circles in the pond, close to the shore and as close to Evan as possible.

The flamingos were actually keeping their distance, today. Probably for the best, because that swan looked as though it could take them all.

"This was really not how I was expecting to spend my day," Evan sighed, attempting to get Ozzy to pay attention to the ball instead of the wealth of fascinating waterbirds. The puppy was having none of it, making yet another break for the ducks.

Billy had survived his fighting class today without receiving any kind of injury, and that was all the reason he needed to head to the Perk. The weather was nice, and all the pumpkin-flavored things were on display, so Billy was sitting at one of the tables outside with a pumpkin coffee and a pumpkin muffin. It was kind of one of the best times of year ever.

[Open! On SP until this afternoon.]
