The Park [Friday night after dark]

Ben had found a giant movie screen...somewhere...and had set it up in the park along with rickshaws and cardboard boxes decorated to look like cars. (On a carless island, you improvised when you'd decided you wanted a drive-in movie experience).

There was also burgers, shakes, fries and other drive-in food for those who were coming to see the cinematic classic that was ~~Fast and Furious~~ Quick and Angry 6: This Time We Have a Tank!

The weather was cooperating tonight, so the sky was clear. Come on out for a movie before the newbies arrive!

Sholeh was thoughtful for a moment, looking at her cookie like it might tell her the answer. "We're...better," she said. "Not back to where we used to be, but we at least interacted today. That's more than we've done since March."

Evan tilted his head a little, and then nodded, reaching to put his arm around her shoulder.

"It's a long time," he noted, softly, "but what happened in there... I think facing him again takes a lot of courage, Sholeh. Little steps are still bigger steps than you have to take."

"He seems really sorry," Sholeh said softly. "But...if that wasn't you or me that weekend--" he knew which weekend she meant "--then can I really hold it against Sparkle?"

Oh yeah, it was hard to forget that weekend. Evan's mouth twitched a little in the beginnings of a smile, again.

"If he's sorry, and it wasn't entirely him at the time, even if you end up holding on to the fear for a little longer, maybe that'll help you both work past it," he offered. "A lot of people weren't themselves in there. It was hard on everyone, I think. That doesn't make what happened okay, but it might make it easier to forgive?"

"That's what Zhahar said," Sholeh agreed with a nod. "Zeela's not really keen on the idea, but..."

Zeela had a much harder time getting over things that had legitimately terrified her, not to mention a predilection for grudges.

"She's the protective one of us."

"I'm glad she is," Evan decided, wrapping his arm around her again for good measure. "I like that you've always got someone there watching out for you, I mean. Everyone should be so lucky."

Sholeh snuggled up close to him. "Don't let her hear you say that," she warned. "She's already insufferable enough."

Other than a giggle, Sholeh was going to ignore that outburst and focus on her date. Even so...heee!

"But you like it? The makeup, I mean. I know most other girls wear it all the time..."

"It looks very good on you," Evan offered, smiling her way. "You look really pretty without it, too, but it's flattering to see you wearing it. Like you took one more extra step before our date tonight."

Like she went through the extra pains to make herself more lovely than she already was. And like she'd done it for him.

"Well, Sparkle offered to do it for me, because I don't know how..."

But, yeah. She'd thought of their date and how pretty the other girls at school were and then decided that maybe prettying herself up (or, well, having Sparkle do it for her) might not be that bad an idea.

"But, I thought, since we were dating now and it's our first, like, official date after we agreed..."

"He didn't cover up your freckles," Evan murmured, and then bit his lip and ducked his head a little and blushed. "I think I like you wearing makeup right now mostly because of that. It's not hiding anything. Just... bringing out other things."

Because for all that Sparkle looked like an angry goth panda, he did know what makeup was actually intended for.

"I don't want you to ever feel like you have to hide pieces of yourself to keep me happy."

"You never make me feel that way," Sholeh said softly, glad that night was falling. It helped her feel less exposed while saying that. "I think you like more of me than I do."

"You mean, all of you?" Evan gave her a little smile, darkness or no darkness. "I think you're too hard on yourself, you know. You're beautiful."

The squirrels probably had a running pool on how many times Sholeh would blush during any given interaction. If so, the higher the better, and here was yet another one in the pot.

"You're just silly," she mumbled, looking down at her lap. "Zhahar's beautiful." Sholeh was the plain sister; she'd always accepted that. She was too mousey to be anything but.

"Sure she is," Evan agreed easily, shrugging his shoulders. "But that doesn't mean anything. One person being pretty doesn't mean that someone else isn't."

He reached to run his fingers affectionately through her hair.

"You're beautiful, too."

So there.

Sholeh looked up at him, tilting her head in curiosity. "You know, you seem different," she told him. "Since that weekend. You seem less hesitant about stuff. More sure."

She was pretty sure that Evan wouldn't have been able to run his hands through her hair and call her beautiful without blushing before.

Well, she'd gone and brought his attention to it. Now he was blushing a little.

"I think it helped to put some things into better perspective," he offered. "He was... He was really sure of himself, too. He knew what way was up. If nothing else, I can stop worrying about whether or not I ever will. It might be carrying a little into everything."

"I'm glad," Sholeh said, worming her hand into his. "It's nice to see. Not that you weren't nice before or anything," she added hastily, "but I like knowing that you've got your feet a little more firmly under you. You can be more Evan that way, you know? Being Evan without second guessing yourself."

"It's a nice change of pace," Evan admitted, smiling faintly. "I can make decisions based on what I feel is right, instead of what I think is going to keep me from making far worse decisions down the road, or what's less likely to make people think I'm something... huge and horrible and not me at all."

He ran his free fingers through her hair again, squeezing her hand and blushing a little all over again.

"But I'm never going to second-guess what I think of you. You really are very pretty."

"Well, you--he was huge, but not at all horrible. And different, but still very much the same person I know now. You'd grown up, but the core of you hadn't changed."

Sholeh knew very much about cores, thank you. She was something of an expert.

Looking up at him, she smiled softly and said, "I feel pretty when I'm with you." And then she gave him a very soft kiss on the lips.
