The Perk, Wednesday Morning

Strictly speaking, Leto hadn't needed to visit Fandom today. Those documents could have waited until Ghanima's next visit home, and he was well aware that it was just an excuse. These days he let himself indulge in excuses, however, if they didn't cause any disruption. Besides, yesterday had been quite a success, not to mention hilarious, as he had managed to confuse both the Ixians and a few of the Houses, by at first agreeing to their proposals and then turning them upside down, and making everyone unsure what they had actually agreed to, even after signing the documents. That was part of the excuse, because it really needed to be described in person.

And, because he was here, he could just stop by for a cup of coffee, and some quiet time just idly looking out the window.

"Home," Atton said easily, "A galaxy well away from here." He raised his chin. "How about you? What year did you graduate?"

He probably wasn't going to give Leto grief if he turned out to be outrageously too old for Sparkle, but still.

Leto raised an eyebrow at the evasive answer, but he has smiling. "In 2010," he said. "Although time seem to move faster in my universe. And despite that most people I knew as as student are no longer here."

Oh, he remembered where he had heard that name before. Leto told himself he needed to pay more attention, and silently debated with himself if he should bring it up. But why not, he decided, it might be interesting.

"You're Sparkle's friend, aren't you?"

"Yep," Atton said.

He lifted his cup back to his mouth and took a sip. "And you're his new... I don't know what. Booty call? Is that a word they use in your universe?"

No, he legitimately didn't know. He figured if Sparkle had gone and gotten himself an entire boyfriend, he'd have heard.

"No, but you could find equivalent expressions," Leto said with a grin, deliberately not answering the main question. He saw no reason to, and besides, he wasn't even sure himself, and that didn't bother him at all.

"Sparkle told me you're a Jedi." Perhaps even reluctantly if he remembered correctly, which made it an even better change of topic.

"Yeah, but don't hold it against me," Atton said easily, leaning back in his chair until it tipped back a little.

"I'll do my best not to." Leto took a sip of his coffee while giving Atton an amused look.

"I'm from a different era than the Jedi you might know," Atton explained, more seriously. "If you know any."

That made more sense. "I took a class for Anakin Skywalker while a student," Leto replied. "And there were members of his family at school with me. So, in what way has the Jedi changed between their time and yours?"

"It's a four-thousand year time difference," Atton said dryly. "Where do you want me to start, exactly?"

Leto shrugged lightly. He wasn't really concerned with the details, and if there was no short version of it - or if Atton just preferred not to talk about it - it didn't matter. He took another sip of his coffee.

Atton took a thoughtful sip of his own coffee. "Well, to begin with," he said, "All of the old Jedi died during the past three wars, so we're currently kind of making things up as we go along. Plus we wear sensible armor instead of dramatic sweeping robes. Don't know how that last bit got in there later on, 'cause it's stupid."

"The situation later demanded dramatic appearance, perhaps?" Leto offered as a not particularly serious explanation. "You have the lightsabers though, don't you?"

Sparkle had mentioned that during knife training.

To be fair, the previous Order had also liked the dramatic robes a lot, so Atton was lying a little here.

"I do have the lightsabers," he agreed, patting both hilts on his belt. "As far as I can tell, Anakin's group is big on the blue and green color coding, though. We don't do that."

"So what do you do?"

"Oh, politics." Leto could elaborate should Atton be interested, but if not, that should be enough.

"Yeah?" Atton said. "I've known some politicians in my day. They're all very polite. As long as they want something, anyway."

"That is one tool, yes," Leto agreed. "I take it they wanted something from you, then."

"We're a martial and religious force living in the center of the Republic," Atton said. "Of course they want stuff. I'm sure it's the same in your galaxy."

"Of course," Leto replied. "That goes without saying." He drank from his cup, looking mostly amused. People wanting things from him could be entertaining, as it had been yesterday.

"So are you one of the politicians who wants things, or one of the politicians that has to deal with people wanting things?" Atton asked.

"The latter." Leto saw no reason to be deliberately vague anymore. "My sister and I rule the Imperium of our universe, mostly by controlling the most precious commodity there."

... Huh.

"So you're like, what, Merchant Emperors instead of Merchant Kings?" Atton said.

"I suppose you could say that," Leto grinned. "Although I have never heard anyone call me that before."

"Yeah? What do they call you, then?"

Atton had an innate distrust of bigwigs in general, sure. But he wasn't going to go spouting off about that and making an ass out of himself unless he saw a reason for Leto to think of him as one.

The guy had been perfectly polite otherwise, if overly amused by himself, anyway.

"I meant the merchant part. Although it is true to some extent." Well, combined with starting new religions. "My home world is Arrakis, a desert planet, and the only place where Spice can be found. It is said that if you control the Spice you control the universe."

Atton blinked. "What, like drugs?" he said. "Because I can hook you up with a bunch of pirate crews who are running my galaxy, then."
