Luke's, Sunday
Pancakes.
Of course, the special for the day was pancakes. It had been pancakes for years, now. It would probably be pancakes for years to come.
But this was also the first week for... probably also years to come... that Kanan knew he wouldn't have one of his regulars coming in to give the kitchen staff hell over it, and with that in mind, after a few pokes from the cook, he sighed and said, "Fine. Might as well get out the things for waffles too."
Compromise. Or utter defeat. One of those two things.
Welcome to Luke's!
Sunday Specials:
Pancakes and/or Waffles!
Choose your favorite toppings!
Either way, Kanan was having himself a waffle and a pancake, either in the name of giving both a fair shake, or maybe in the name of making more work for the cook. So there.
He missed Summer already.

"Typically, they're sweet," Kanan replied, hiking up a shoulder. "Waffles are like crispier pancakes, and neither of them are typically finger foods. We can avoid those for you, since we don't want to make a mess of your gloves."
He paused a moment, and then ventured, "Tea?"

And then she had to laugh a little, because she wasn't sure what she'd been concerned about. Honestly, if Seivarden actually bothered to recommend she come to the diner on a weekend, then she should have expected the service would be excellent. Anything less, and she'd have no said anything or told Tisarwat to just not bother.
"I think I'll try the waffles, then," she decided, "since they'll be something new."

"Could we maybe do a little of both?" she wondered, since she really wasn't sure she could choose.

Hey, he knew what it was like to be from far, far away. Being spoiled for choice on top of everything else was sometimes fairly daunting, and she seemed to be - ahem - waffling, a bit.

He wrote out the order and sent it to the back before pausing to check on the tea. Giving a little nod, he removed the strainer and set the mug (it was, after all, still a diner) in front of her. "Do you take anything in this? I'm sorry, I'm still learning what is and isn't done in the Radch when it comes to tea customs."
He... vaguely remembered Seivarden, as a teenager, insisting that she wasn't a baby when Caleb muddled his way around making tea for her. It didn't hurt to check.

"Oh, no, thank you," she said when the mug was set down in front of her, with another smile and an appreciative gesture. "This should be fine. A good, proper tea shouldn't need anything else added to it."
She did have her doubts as to how good it might be, especially considering Seivarden's complaints, but she'd drink it anyway, even if it was terrible. Her expectations weren't very high, though, which is maybe why it wasn't that bad once she did get around to having a sip.
Not great, either. But not that bad. Probably not anything she'd look forward to drinking again, but still would out of politeness. Especially since he was being so respectful about her customs.
"I take it you're friends with Seivarden, then?" she ventured, once she set her tea down for now. "You seem to know quite a bit about the Radch."
Comparatively. It was more than she'd come to expect out of people here, and she couldn't help feeling a little impressed.

He shrugged a little.
For however long it lasted, really.
"Her cat and my dog get along. I figure if they can, we might as well. And everything else," he gestured toward the tea. "That's just basic respect. Learning and acting appropriately toward somebody far from home doesn't do any harm, after all."
Well. Within limits. Kanan still wasn't too keen on the Radchaai concept of 'uncivilized,' after all, and would never regret letting Hera tear after Seivarden as a nexu when first they met, either.

"I know I appreciate it," she said, smiling a different smile when she set the mug down again. "It is...really different here, and even little things like knowing the importance of tea can make things a lot easier. So thank you. Again."
She laughed a little, giving her head a small shake. "I've said that a lot, haven't I? But I mean it. You've been very kind and helpful."
no subject
Covered up with that mug or not, Kanan knew you were amused over there, Tisarwat. That helped, too.
"You're welcome," he added. "And I appreciate your patience. Tea was a part of my life as far back as I can remember, but what I'm used to is a little more modest than what I'm certain you consider adequate."
And then he'd become space trash and had developed a caf addiction instead. So.

And thank Amaat his experience hadn't been just Seivarden Vendaai!

"I wasn't going to name names, but Breq and I are friends," he acknowledged. "I've taught her a little since we met, sometimes she stops by the park when I'm training." A beat. "With swords," he added. "Which Seivarden so very tactfully calls 'sword club.'"
And that came with a roll of his eyes.
"But Seivarden will be Seivarden."
Kanan would not hesitate to thump her if she crossed any lines around him again, at least?

He gave a small, wry smile.
"A bit like tea."

She liked to think she could one day get used to everyone without gloves, but that wasn't something she had a whole lot of hope for.
"What is it like where you're from?" she asked. "And what are your people like? Is it very different from here?"
no subject
Safer than home, anyway.
"My people were," he realized he'd spoken in the past tense only a moment too late and barrelled on without pause anyway, "something else entirely. Warriors, yes, but scholars, too. The peacekeepers of our galaxy, part of a tradition going back tens of thousands of years."
