Midsummer Festival - The Beach, Saturday Evening

Sure it was a week late. And sure it wasn't even a traditional Midsummer festival because there weren't any games or people selling fried foods or screaming eyeballs in the sky.

But Magnus was pretty darn proud of what had been tossed together for a fun costume party on the beach.

With a big, mildly terrifying wicker bear waiting to be set on fire because something something Midsommar. He wasn't sure of the details because scary movies weren't his jam.

Either way, it would be good, clean fun!

“And? Don’t leave me hanging, man, what was the first time?”

"We found a body on a hike and that idiot broke his arm trying to climb down a cliff face to get a closer look," Danny sighed. Because his life was so hard.

“It kinda sounds like you need better friends.”

Because Duke had any room at all to talk.

"Yeah," Danny said, eyeing him. "Yeah, that would be nice."

You were part of the problem too, Duke!

“What’s that look for?”

Asked the guy who got Danny abducted by a cult and then decided throwing swords while drinking was a good plan.

"Just thinking about the friends I've made here and how none of them are sane either." He was including Liam in that now too. He'd been fooled for a little bit! "Though the time travelling pirate seems to be relatively normal."

“I hope you’re listening to what you’re saying there. I suppose being able to say that with a straight face is a sign of progress.”

Don't make him think about it, Duke. Don't you do that to him.

"And probably a psychotic break."

“Yeah, maybe. But hey, if it makes you feel better, is a psychotic break really so bad?”

"You're tryin' real hard to get me to accept this place, you know."

“Yeah, well. Maybe I’ve gotten used to having you around.”

And had big old abandonment issues.”

He was surrounded by people like that!

Danny shot him a look for that, sighing quietly into his beer as he took a sip. "Kind of at the mercy of this place."

Because he had Grace to think about.

Duke sighed. “Yeah, I know.” Just like Octavia had been! “But while you’re here, you might as well be comfortable, too, right?”

Danny took another sip of his beer, flicking a crab shell fragment at him. "Yeah, yeah. We'll see."

Were they having a moment here?

Please. They were basically each other's substitute besties.

"You know, Diaz thinks we've been flirting."

That was true. Look, there were voids in their lives that needed filling!

...not dirty.

"Of course she does," Danny said with a snort of amusement. That wasn't an actual denial because, well, he wasn't an idiot.

"Don't worry. I told her you only have eyes for your super SEAL."

Which did not stop them from flirting, no.

Danny rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Gee, thanks for that."

"You're welcome," Duke said cheerfully. "Just calling it like I see it."

"I don't know how many times I have to explain how it's not like that," Danny replied dryly.

He thought that maybe it was kinda that first year, but then... their lives kinda imploded and it got shoved to the side and now it was just this weird friendship that made people think they were married.

"Steven has a very nice girlfriend who somehow puts up with him."

Until she really got those abandonment issues up in a tizzy by bouncing.

Hate when they did that.

“Yes, because feelings being unrequited makes them go away.”

Hey now, that shit was uncalled for. People did not just come out and say things like that to Danny.

"Can we just not?" he asked, going to press his fingers to his eyelids before once again remembering the pain of Old Bay.

Danny started it by pointing out Duke couldn't save everyone!

"You rather go back to talking about how you don't know how to season your food?"

"Yes." Wait. "And I do know how to season food. Don't blame me for your poor work at cooking."

"Excuse me?!" Duke pressed his hand to his chest ala an offended southern belle. "I own a restaurant, sir!"
