After last week, Fraser was sure that no student or adult needed to be exerting themselves. They needed to rest and recover. That was why he'd had the NPC Landscaping grew bring out several tables, umbrellas, and some food and drinks out to the garden.

"We're not going to work today," he said, smiling gently at them. "We're going to rest. If you're here, please feel free to take a seat and relax in the shade. Have some food and a drink and recover. It's been a very trying, very long few days and we all deserve a chance to recharge. Enjoy the garden and the completely whole island."

With that, he nodded and took a seat at one of the tables himself.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
The NPC Landscaping Crew was still at the community center but Fraser had taken those that had been volunteering their time to various spots around town to do some more planting. With the summer season in full swing, today was all about replacing some older, dead plants and flowers with newer one. It was about weeding areas around the park, the preserve, and the streets that needed attention. So, put on your gloves and be prepared to get dirty. It was time to weed and plant and plant and weed!
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
The tents were still up as it was going to be another scorching, hot day and the NPC Landscaping Crew and the school administration didn't want to make anyone sick from the heat. With the trees planted and garden in progress, things were slowly beginning to look more decorative in the previously dirt filled lot.

Today, it was time to plant more trees. This time, they were going to line the perimeter of the actual community center to provide shade and decor to the building. There were several flowering saplings sitting near the lot, ready to be planted. Take care with the trees as their young and delicate. Make certain they get watered and situated safely and go back and do it again!
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
It was going to be a hot day and, as such, the NPC Landscaping crew had thought ahead and had erected a few tents over the garden area so people wouldn't swelter. They'd still have to battle the heat but the sun would be less intense.

The trees that had been planted last week were now being tended to and today's job was back to planting flowers in the garden. The lot was large, giving the workers a lot of room to plant. The NPC Landscaping crew was hopeful for variety and a lot of pretty colors.

They weren't a fickle bunch.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
The lot near the community center was bustling with activity this morning. Despite the holiday being yesterday, everyone was awake and not showing any signs of being too full, too burned on fireworks or too hungover. That was a good thing since today, there were trees being put in.

Several small flowering trees were situated away from the lot, waiting to be planted. There were landscapers tending to the ground and digging the holes and it was up to those working the project today to get the trees planted and situated. It would be strenuous work but ultimately rewarding.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Even though it was a break week, Fraser was still out supervising the community project. Work didn't stop just because classes did, after all. The gardeners and landscapers were in the lot near the community center today, getting started on the very large garden that was due to be started there.

Landscaping supplies were piled neatly on the outside of the lot and there were already people hard at work planting flowers and laying down mulch. It was a nice day, the sun was shining and it wasn't oppressively hot.

It was a good day to be outside.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
With the community center finished, a new community project was needed. This time, the administration had decided to go in a more...decorative direction. It was time to beautify the island! Currently, landscapers and gardeners were set up in the park, replanting some of the flowers that hadn't made it through the winter and planting new ones.

There were packets of seeds on the benches along with piles of gardening equipment. Everyone was going to be working in and around the park today, planting flowers that along the various sidewalks and in the flowerbeds. It was going to be a warm day so water and shade was provided for when the workers needed to take breaks.

So, dig in and prepare to get a green thumb!
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
The community center almost looked complete. The walls and roof were installed, the doors and windows had been put in over the weekend so now the brunt of the work was being done inside. There was painting, electrical work, tiling, carpeting, furniture moving, plumbing, and lighting on the schedule today. With the community center scheduled to open this Saturday, the NPC Construction Crew was working diligently to get it up to standard.

Hard hats and goggles were required today. Safety first!
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Despite the heat of last week, the NPC Construction crew had managed to get the framework of the community center up. It half looked like a building now. There were walls being installed now along with several other odds and ends both inside and outside those walls. The heat wasn't quite so bad today but there was plenty of water for those that wanted it.

Hard hats and safety goggles were required, once again!
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Due to the holiday and the player's vacation, Fraser hadn't been out at the site on Monday. He was out there now, letting this serve as his regularly scheduled office hours for the week. The foundation had been laid and now the framework of the rooms was going up. There were supplies to be moved, things to be held and a messy day to be had.

Safety goggles and protective gear was a must!
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Construction had been going smoothly since the groundbreaking the previous week. There was progress being made and the NPC Construction Company had moved in a lot of supplies over the past few days, stacking them and getting them ready to be added to the new building. Foundation, of course, would come first since the ground had already been prepared.

Hard hats, goggles and tool belts were required and it was going to be hard, sweaty work but it'd be rewarding. The Community Center would be all the better for it.

Fraser was out there as well, supervising those from the town that might come out to help. He was more a point of contact and someone to ask questions to rather than a supervisor. He was in his safety gear as well and helping move supplies.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
It seemed appropriate that on today, of all days, there seemed to be flowers everywhere. Fraser had woken up to them in the coffee pot, in the dog food and growing out of the pockets in his serge. Now, as he prepared to break ground on the new community center, they were surrounding the work site, sticking out of the pockets of various townspeople and singing delightedly while they did. It was fitting.

The land around 27 Chimera had been cleared, giving it a flat, empty look. That would soon change. With one dig of his shovel and a few smiles, ground was broken on the brand new community center! It was one of the bigger undertakings the town had taken on recently and there was a lot of excitement about it. The NPC Construction Crew wasn't going to waste any time and immediately got started once people had dispersed a bit from the work site.

Construction had officially begun! In a few weeks, everyone on the island would be able to utilize a brand new facility for whatever they might like!
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
It was the last day of the community project. The NPC Construction crew were all hugging and saying their goodbyes like they weren't going to see each other the following Monday at work. Fraser let them be.

"Good morning," he greeted. "Today is our final day here. We're just going to be touching things up in the interior of the building today. It's light work so if you finish, do feel free to leave early. I and, I'm sure, Mr. Harris, thank you for your time and dedicate to the project this summer. You've all been wonderful."

He gave them all a smile, glanced one last time at the hugging construction crew before waving them all to work.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
The apartments were nearing completion as each day passed. The exterior was almost complete with the NPC Construction crew still adding the finishing touches.

"Welcome back," Fraser said, nodding at the assembled group. "We're almost finished with this project and I thank you for your time and dedication this semester. Today, we're going to continue our interior work. Hard hats please. If you are working with electrical wires, please make sure you have a member of the construction crew nearby. If not, there are things taped off and labeled for you to complete. Thank you."

Fraser nodded and waved them all into the building.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
The new apartments were progressing so well that they almost looked completed. Well, from the outside. NPC Construction was still on the job and still adding things to the outside.

Fraser addressed those that had come out today. "Welcome back. Today, we're going to be doing interior work on the ground floor. Please wear hard hats and find the marked off areas where things such as insulation, sockets, light switch work and other things await. Please be careful, as always. Should you need me, I will be around."

He smiled at the group and then walked off to talk to someone from NPC Construction.

No, actually, he just felt like wearing shorts today. He felt it was in keeping with the theme of the day, which was, "Short workday! It's totally because I love you all and appreciate how hard you've been working and the care you've taken not to drive drywall screws through your heads, and nothing at all to do with it being my last day on the job or having a tux fitting in another dimension to get to this afternoon."

It did leave Xander a little confused about why everybody else was wearing shorts, though. Not that his pants didn't all transform? It's just that he'll never know it because he only opened the Tacky Bermuda Shorts drawer today.

[OOC: Open! Not the last day of construction, just Xander's, as he's honeymoon-bound this weekend. We leave you in the capable hands of Constable My God If You Haven't Seen Men With Brooms You Should.]

Fraser had managed to get to work albeit with a few detours along the way. Robin, who seemed to delight in sticking close to him and being mean, was right by his leg, wagging her tail happily.

"If you made it, congratulations," he said. "And please, continue with the drywall project you were doing on Monday. The project is progressing nicely and hopefully, we'll soon be complete. Be careful, avoid the bulldozers and try not to get lost."

Robin barked in agreement then stepped on Fraser's feet as she trotted away. Fraser sighed and followed.

Today, the construction site was oddly quiet.

This was because so far, none of the contractors from NPC Construction had managed to find their way to said construction site.

There was just Xander, looking slightly confused, his clothes a little the worse for wear after tromping through the Preserve for half an hour before he finally decided to give up and head home... and ended up here.

"So, um. For anybody who actually made it to work today? Congratulations. Put up some drywall, don't touch the bulldozers, and you probably don't wanna head offsite for lunch. Unless you were looking for an excuse to slack off in the afternoon, in which case go for it. ...I should probably have used my inside voice for that, huh."

If the guy with the tools happened to look like a guy with a lot on his mind today, the looker would not be incorrect in his and/or her* assumptions. Still, he did manage to stop muttering possible wedding vows under his breath long enough to give a set of basic "Hey, look, we now have a second floor. Make more walls. Don't climb the scaffolding like it's monkey bars unless you are in fact a monkey," instructions that would hopefully stop people from going splat on his watch.

"Good morning," Fraser said brightly to all those that made it out to the community project. "Today, we'll be continuing the progression of the construction project that Mr. Harris started on Monday. Please continue to build on the structure, carefully, with the pre cut lumber. The places that still need work are still marked."

He gave a quick nod. "Please don't hesitate to come find me if you have any questions."

"So about that whole being back on Friday thing..." Xander said as he reached for his Galaxy Quest hardhat. "I'll just say have you met the idiot who plays me Portalocity? At least it gave the contract guys some time to get the first floor walls started for us."

He pointed to the building, which was indeed starting to look more like a building, now. When he turned back around and stubbed his toe on the black stump in his path, there followed a few choice not-safe-for-squirrel epithets before he shook his head and added, "Helps that it wasn't totally a pile of rubble to start with. Good foundation goes a long way. So today we start building on that. There's pre-cut lumber already laid out, and the places that need framework are marked with red cable-ties. Need any help, I'll be working over on the south-east corner. Just yell."

He paused. "Preferably something like 'Hey Xander' unless we're talking industrial accident or something's ignoring the No Rampaging signs. Then go with 'Help!' Or 'Oh frak!'"

[OOC: Community project, open to all!]

Fraser was back out at the job site, wearing a hard hat and already working when everyone else arrived.

"We're continuing the building process," he said once they were all assembled. "Help out where you can, be proactive if you see something that needs to be done and be safe."

It was short but it was to the point and Fraser nodded at the mall before going back to work.

[Community project! Open to all!]

The island was in a new location. Again. If the new locations hadn't been turning out so well, he might have been getting irritated with the constant change of surroundings but he really couldn't complain when it kept depositing them in such nice places.

Nevertheless, he was back out at the ruins of the Echolls mansion. The framework was starting to take shape even further and soon enough, siding, flooring, ceiling and other necessities would be going up.

Not quite yet though. Still more building and stacking to be done.

"Good morning," Fraser said pleasantly. "I hope you all are enjoying the island's new location. For today, we're going to continue with what we've been doing. It should be completed by Friday at the latest. And Friday is when Mr. Harris should be back so you won't have to see me all the time. I know, it's been hard."

With a smile, he nodded at the crew before sending them off to work.

[Community project, open to all!]
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
With Mr. Harris unavailable, Fraser was back at the job site again on Friday. There were several rows of provided water bottles and a cooler full of ice.

Things were starting to take shape even further now as the NPC Construction team hadn't really stopped working.

"Good morning," he said and smiled. "As you can see, we're moving right along. I'd like us to continue with what we were doing on Wednesday. Please be safe while building and using the power tools and please see me if you have any questions. Thank you."

With that, he nodded and walked off to begin work.
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Fraser was, again, very grateful for the lack of purple rain and the lack of being a girl. He noticed the start of things being built as soon as he made his way out to the job site this morning.

"Good morning," he greeted all those that were there. "To continue on with what Mr. Harris started on Monday, we're going to continue the building process. Hard hats, please, and safety first, of course."

He nodded to the framework. "We're getting there and I thank you for all your help thus far."

Xander stood in front of the now-much-less-muddy (though slightly purple-tinged) construction site, hat-clad as usual, though, er. Not the usual hat.

Blueprints were spread out in front of him on a table, next to said table was a large pile of cinderblock, and nearby all of that was a corner of the building which the trusty guys from NPC Construction had actually got into some semblance of its intended structure, bare metal framework waiting to be built around.

"Now don't anybody get so excited we have to truck you down to the clinic in a wheelbarrow," Xander said, "But we're actually gonna start building stuff."

So it was a little wet. So what? Not like the rain that was slowly spattering Xander's construction hat until it looked like he'd been swimming in Grape Kool-Aid made for an unsafe wor-- oh.

Building a deck, probably safe. Playing in the purple mud of post-snowmonster ruins? Not so much.

So there was a tarp and there were drinks, snacks, lawn chairs and and a radio under it, and there were slickers for anybody who did want to go out and play in the rain as long as they didn't, you know touch the tools or get anywhere near the actual ruins.

There was also a wee portable aquarium on a table just outside the edge of the tarp, and a very happy purple frog taking a rainbath.

[OOC: Very wet community project, open to all!]
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
There weren't any gold X's or parrots on shoulders at the project site today. Instead, there were several small, white rats and they were...singing.

A simple rat, lowly born
Unwashed and unknown
Who toils for bread from early morn (just a nibble!)
Till half the night has flown
Till half the night has flown
No golden whiskers can he impart
No wealth of water or squeaking on demand
No fortune, save his tiny heart
And honest, clawed right hand
His tiny heart and clawed right hand!

Fraser could only really stare. And stare some more. "Riiiiight. Today, we're...going to try not to break into song with the rats that are here. I'd say continue digging but I think we're not going to find anymore buried treasure this time around. So, since we've still got ruins to organize, we can probably, at least, start moving things to get our work area clear for when foundation and such is laid."

Fraser nodded and kept a close eye on those singing rats.

They were still mostly ruiny, but a great deal less trashy, thanks to the volunteers.

They were also covered in little X's, and there was a Xander standing near a wheelbarrow full of shovels.

"Okay so this wasn't what I had planned for today?" He scratched his head under the edge of his construction hat, then shrugged. "--but ignoring it when Fandom gives you a hint tends to be a bad idea, so... be careful? If smoke, fire, green gas or baby dinosaurs come out, STOP DIGGING. And just in case, there's bottles of Holy Water to squirt on whatever you find before you open it. Just saying. "

Standing next to a portable work-table piled as usual with hats, gloves, and other safety equipment, Xander had his own hat in one hand, the better to gesture with.

"I know you guys have been looking forward to getting done with the cleanup and actually, you know... building something."

Then he hat-gestured at the rubble-strewn remains of the entry foyer. "That's good. You keep doing that. Everybody needs hope to get them through their day."

"Good morning," Fraser said, greeting those that had assembled. "To continue on from what Mr. Harris told you on Monday, we're going to continue the clean up of the area that was formerly the Echolls mansion. Please wear all proper safety attire and please refrain from playing with the debris."

He smiled pleasantly at all of them. "Think of this as the renovation of the school but on a smaller scale. Should you have a need for assistance, do not hesitate to come and find me."

He clapped his hands together once and said, "Let's get started then."

"For anybody who wasn't here when this went down--" Xander, clad in a certain white and blue hardhat that might be familiar to some, jerked his thumb towards the partially-demolished building, speaking loudly over the noise of a drainage pump that was patiently sucking the mucky, muddy water out of what used to be a pretty kickass swimming pool. "That's what happens when you don't have clearly posted safety signage during an invasion."

Oh look, he brought an extra No Rampaging sign. And a post-hole digger.

"It's also what happens when you do have clearly-posted signage," he admitted. "But at least this way you've got a better case if you try to sue the monsters for damages. And this--" He waved his arms at the construction site in general. "--is what happens when we finally run out of room at the MCA and have to get off our butts and build a second apartment building. First law of re-building, though - before you get to the fun stuff, you have to clear away the crap. ...Second law is don't juggle the power tools."

Ah, safety lectures. Just like riding a bicycle. Through a construction site. Without proper headgear. Which you shouldn't do.

Having handwavily let people know that they might want to wear beachy-type clothes today, Xander stood in front of several coiled-up garden hoses, and pointed to the biggest area of clear grass available.

"Since we're just about done here, I figured we could do a little lawn-care before we hit the road." Because a globe-hopping island totally didn't get enough moisture on its own, right.

And the extra-long, adult-sized Slip-n-Slides? Secret hi-tech lawn-tenderizing tool of master gardeners everywhere.

"Try to at least get some water on the grass?"

With the park pretty much back to normal, Fraser couldn't really think of much for the workers to do today since everything was pretty much completed.

"Good morning," he greeted. "With the park renovation almost as it's end, I would like to thank you all for your help. Today, I figure, can be a light day. If you have any pets, please feel free to go retrieve them and introduce them to all the new things in the park. Feel free to explore, enjoy and suggest further improvements. Dief barked his agreement with this before following Fraser towards one of the benches.

Well, after this weekend, it was going to be more of a park clean up.

Fraser was there, looking tired and worn, but he was there.

"Good morning," he said quietly. "For those that were here this weekend, I hope you are all well or will be getting well. If you have friends and loved ones that were all involved, I hope they are well too. Today, we're just going to do a park cleanup. A lot happened here and, while our improvements weren't ruined, they probably need to be touched up. Thank you."

With that, Fraser moved slowly off to start cleaning.

If the park smells good, it might be due to the burgers sizzling on one of the built-in barbecue grills, the one Xander's actually standing at. Dotted around the picnic area are several more, and beside them on the grass are coolers of moddable burgers and hot dogs of both the meat and the not varieties, wings, possibly a steak or two if you're lucky, and various veggies for shish kebabs.

"For reference," Xander said, spearing a steak a few times, then holding it up. "This? Horrible barbecue fork accident. Dead from blood loss with half their throat torn out? Vampire. Learn the difference. This has been your safety lesson for the day. Oh yeah -- also try not to set yourselves on fire when you test out the grills."

Fraser was relaxing on one of the benches in the park when everyone assembled. There were still tools and supplies but he wasn't working too much yet.

"Good morning," he said, nodding. "I hope everyone's week is going well and that no one's gotten into any trouble. We've almost completed the renovation. Things are built, improved or almost there. For today, feel free to finish any lingering things up and, after that, feel free to test out the benches and the grass to make sure they're comfortable. There are blankets and chairs to do so. Enjoy yourselves."

And Fraser finally got up to go complete a few things.

A not so early Xander today, made up for (possibly) by a dorky grin and an easy job. "No screwing around on the job today, because we're working on a very, very important safety project," he told the assembled grads, oglers, civic-minded volunteers, masochistic teal deer and passing squirrels.

"Testing out the playground equipment. Not kidding <snicker>, folks. This is serious business! Anybody I see having fun is totally fired."

So, the island had moved again. It wasn't surprising. Fraser had gotten used to it after the second move. And he'd never been to Madagascar, never thought he'd end up in Madagascar.

"Welcome back," Fraser said, nodding at the crew. "And welcome to Madagascar. We're continuing park renovations for today. Stay hydrated, take breaks when you need to and ask questions if you have them. Other than that, work hard."

With that, he let everyone get to work.

Anybody hitting the park today would find Xander out there bright and early -- unnaturally early, some might even suggest. Almost as early as someone who'd sneaked out of their own apartment before the alarm went off and showered at Atlas Gym might be. Though clearly that wasn't the explanation for why Xander was early. Even if his hair was still wet.

Said wet-haired Xander could be located near a pile of polyurethane-sealed wood and curvy wrought-iron benchposts this morning. "Today, we bench." This, thankfully, he knew how to do, unlike Tuesday's flail-inducing gardening.

It was a bit cooler today so Fraser was back in flannel and jeans and keeping an eye on the sky in case of rain.

"Good morning everyone," Fraser said, smiling. "It looks like we got a break in the weather today so we won't all be keeling over due to the heat. Still, stay hydrated and take breaks when they are needed. Thank you for your hard work during this project."

With that, he gestured them all towards their work and headed off to get started himself.

Today, there were...flowers. In little trays. And more Pez-shaped bricks to put around the flower beds. And there was a Xander standing next to them who knew what to do with the Pez-shaped bricks, but was sort of flailing helplessly at the plants.

It was okay, though. He had a list. Which he read off very carefully to the assembled masses. While he inwardly prayed there was somebody among the graduates who knew how to take care of plants that weren't arm-eating and holographic.

And then he started making borders, because bricks, he could do. He'd never managed to kill a brick yet. Except intentionally, with a wrecking ball.

It was a warm day out and Fraser actually dressed for the weather, eschewing flannel for short sleeves and jeans.

"Good morning," he said, nodding. "We're almost finished with park renovations. There will be a new project starting somewhat soon so keep an eye out for those. For today, just continue doing what we've been doing and, if you have any questions, I will be around."

With that, Fraser smiled at the group before walking off to tinker with some things.

Today there were no Pez-flavored bricks. There was once again a Xander, and there were poles.

He picked one up off the ground and planted it in the dirt in front of him like he was claiming the park for England. Or Wales or whereverthehell his ancestors had actually invaded from. He pointed. "Not for dancing. For swinging -- after you make 'em into swings, otherwise you'd just fall on your ass."

He set the pole down and reached for one of the connecting pieces to show people how to put it all together, then paused. "Not that I'm gonna stop you if you want to dance. Whatever. Just wear a hardhat."

There were also hardhats.

Today there were bricks. Bricks and bricks and bricks. There was also a Xander standing next to them, and a dirt-trail already laid out for paving.

"No power tools or heavy machinery, what'm I gonna safety-lecture about?" he asked, scratching his head. Then he snorted. "Oh wait, this is Fandom, and I've met you people. Don't throw them, don't eat them, don't trade them to anybody for magic beans..."

There was more. It went on for a while. At one point he paused to feed a Twinkie to the small blue deer that nudged gently at his knee. That kind of while.

Park [All Day]

Monday, June 2nd, 2008 07:02 am
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
It was Monday, the start of a new week, and, since the school wasn't in shambles, this year's community service project was a renovation of the park.

Fraser was out, bright and early (and out of uniform but IN clothing, thank you), waiting by a large moddable variety of supplies to help rebuild, renovate and revamp the park.

When those that were participating arrived, Fraser addressed them.

"Good morning," he said, smiling. "I thank you all for coming out and I hope you've been enjoying your summer so far. As you can see, we're, once again, holding a community service project this summer. This year's project is a renovation of our beautiful park. We're going to be adding paths, barbecues, benches and hanging swings, water features, and other assorted features. Safety first so please remember to protect yourself while working. Please also remember to remain hydrated. And feel free to come and find me should you have any questions. I will be around."

With that, he nodded and let them get to work.

[This is the senior community service project but it is OPEN to all those that want to participate in helping with the park.]
