The glitter moosen and beavers had been moved to the park to stand friendly guard around a cluster of tents, tables and chairs. Underneath, the Homecoming events rolled on with another maple-themed buffet and plenty of space for standing around and chatting.

The sound system played kd lang and Leonard Cohen at a low volume, to gently welcome anyone who might have gotten into the punch last night after it was spiked. This event was decidedly hangover-friendly.

Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

Welcome to your 2011 Homecoming Dance!

Welcome, one and all, to the Fandom High Homecoming Carnival! Here you'd find red and white decorations abound, including just about everything maple-leaf emblazoned imaginable, an assortment of moose-related things (including a crossing sign), and an assortment of delicious foods.

Rides, games and activities were set up all over the park, and an enormous set of speakers was playing a Canadian Greatest Hits playlist that seemed to be disproportionately Bieber-centric.

All the joy of Canada was brought to you by your friendly neighborhood Student Council. Enjoy!

Kyle had a list of things he wanted to do in Fandom before he went home. Being on hold with Portalocity's customer service was not one of them. He'd waited over an hour in his room, waiting for the annoying music and intermittent service messages to stop. After that, he decided that he wasn't sitting in his room any more.

He made it to the road outside of Luke's when the music finally stopped and the customer service agent spoke. Kyle gave her the details of his portal so he could find out why they wanted him to call back.

"No, my portal is leaving tonight." Pause. "It's been booked for weeks!" Pause. "Maybe it's under a different name." Pause. "Canceled? It can't be canceled. I'm supposed to go tonight. They're waiting for me. I- yes, I know it's a busy weekend. I know, Iceland. There was a viking thing. Re-booking? What is that?"

Kyle frowned at the phone after hanging up. It looked like he wasn't leaving today after all. They'd call him back once they managed to figure out when they could book him a new portal. Damn it.

Today was weird, if that even needed to be said. Going to graduation and remembering that she'd done that just last year except it was six years ago now was odd enough, and then there had been Vikings, which Jaina could identify due to that one night a couple months ago she'd Googled "Vikings" and ended up stuck in a Wikipedia loop for three hours.

Once she'd finished with all things graduation, she'd gone to Caritas a little late for her very last shift. That was somehow stranger than what had happened at the ceremony, and she was firmly not dealing with any sadness or any thinking about how she was gone in a few days. No, tonight she was repressing and making herself a drink because it was her last night and she could, and also advertising a special.

Emma was still a bit distracted when she made her way into work, to the point she was almost late. She wasn't, but it was a near thing.

The fact she couldn't remember most of her weekend was driving her insane. There were flashes, bits, and pieces, but nothing that made sense. Still, the Devil's Nest was open, and it would provide a good enough distraction for her tonight.
[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com
As far as weird ass Fandom weekends went, this one hadn't been terrible. For one thing, Rose hadn't accidentally slept with anyone (or had a threesome, Caroline) and for another, apparently there was some universe where she was still alive in twenty years. Still alive and in love with Lissa - she was trying to only think about that first part.

But with the weirdness of the weekend over, she was free to obsess over how to handle the situation at Court. It turned on either convincing Dimitri that they had to do their own investigating into the Queen's death and the possibility of Lissa's sibling or getting away from him to investigate on her own.

Rose had been surprised by how empty the gym was when she got there, but for once, it sort of suited her mood. She'd even been able to dig through old (clean, thank you) laundry and lost and found to find some of her old stuff to wear as she worked out. Next step probably should be Pixie Dust for more clothes. But for now, she was working the heavy bag, letting the familiar rhythms of punching and kicking take over.

[The gym is open though without OCD]

A near constant in the past twenty years for Bobby was church on Sunday.  The past ten or so had made Sundays the busiest day of his week, and while he supposed he could have gone off-island to continue that trend, he felt called instead to the old stone church on the island.

It wasn't nearly appropriate to celebrate a Eucharist in a church he was neither installed in or invited to, but that never had seemed to matter at Fandom, and after saying his own prayers, Bobby found himself moving through the liturgy, partially out of habit and partially because it felt very - and oddly - right.

He wasn't sure the last time the Eucharist had been celebrated in this church - and Bobby was pretty certain that it probably had not been celebrated recently with an overly large cinnamon roll he'd gotten from J,GoB before he realised where he was going to end up.  His priest tools had wine and holy water, but Bobby had a dislike of those wafers that could last a thousand years and never packed them.  So this very Fandom service had wine and cinnamon roll.  It seemed appropriate.

Although the weekend was almost over, the esteemed alumni of Fandom High were not getting away without one last get-together. The park had been deemed too cold for the event, so the community center had been set up again with tasteful blue and yellow streamers and real flowers on the tables, although there might have been a few paper flowers still lying around from last night too.

There was plenty of food just waiting to be eaten, and if someone asked nicely, they might be able to acquire a drink or two as well. It was five o'clock somewhere.

Jaina had spent some time at the mixer, but she had to admit she'd been sort of drawn to Caritas. Saturdays had been her night and for some strange reason she was a little nostalgic today. She couldn't resist stopping in for at least a little while to tell Tino everything she'd been up to, despite- or more accurately, because of- the fact that he'd never cared about his coworkers' personal lives in the slightest, and to head behind the bar.

Just because she could. And because she never got to do things like this anymore. For some reason empresses didn't tend bar much, who knew?

...Empresses probably also didn't consider lining the bar up with champagne glasses and trying that pouring trick she'd perfected at Mirta's wedding, and yet here she was, considering it.

If anyone could recall the dance from the night before, they would have thought that it was decorated tastefully compared to what was going on tonight. There were streamers, balloons and what appeared to be paper flower ornaments everywhere. All done in yellow and blue for the proud graduates of Fandom High, of course.

And there were the 'classic' songs from twenty years ago blaring loudly for people to dance or cringe to. Who knew Ke$ha and Justin Bieber would get to be classic pop music for future generations?

Just be glad there is an open bar.

Rose had gotten herself a cup of hot chocolate from the Perk, but she wasn't into sitting around inside. She was way too restless to stay still so she wandered around the island, staying carefully away from MCA and certain parts of the beach. There was a pink tree in the park that seemed more peaceful than the rest of the island, but she wasn't feeling the urge for peaceful and made her way over to the swings instead.

Swings were always awesome tyvm even if she was 19. She pulled out her phone, finally punching in the numbers of some people she hadn't seen for way too long. Calls done, Rose pumped her legs, seeing if she could achieve the ever-elusive 360 over the bars and wondered exactly why Lissa had sent her here. It didn't make any more sense than it had before, but she was starting to enjoy the idea more as she kept an eye out for anyone she knew.

Even though it was daytime, the "dolphins in space" theme had been carried over to the brunch. The mural was nowhere to be found, but inside the tent that had been set up to give everyone a shady place to gather, there were silver and blue metallic streamers and balloons hung up, and each of the tables had a blue flower arrangement on it.

There were no fish to be found though, unless you counted what could be on the food table. Honestly, that might not really be fish either.

Huh. It was Rose's last shift at the gym. In like - she checked the clock - 36 hours, she'd be leaving Fandom for good and heading on back to her real life. She wasn't thinking about it.

It was just a normal day at the gym. Normal chores, normal work, normal music. Everything normal except the growing pile of Rose's stuff that ended up next to the desk as she tried to find everything she'd left at the gym over the past year.
[identity profile] guardian-god.livejournal.com
Nine months ago, if given a choice was between packing, training, and getting out of the apartment, Dimitri would have selected to complete his packing preparations. Tonight, Dimitri was leaning over a pool table, taking a few practice shots while he waited for a girl to show up. How things had changed for him.

Pool was a welcome distraction from all the things he would prefer not to think about. Like how he really needed to get Rose to let him have that conversation he felt they needed to have. Maybe when she was distracted by how badly she was losing. Or winning.

Rose was in a remarkably good mood for spending the majority of the past 24 hours in the gym. Jessi was in a remarkably good mood too which was disturbing.

At least until Rose realised that Jessi's good mood was based on the understanding that it was Rose's last day at the gym.

Oh, how she loved breaking the news that it wasn't.

After one night sleeping in his office, and one night on a cot that simply wasn't meant for a person his height, Dimitri deserved a drink.

Sadly there was no Chuck there for him to chat with, just a too-happy Tino.

Dimitri didn't want to ask why Tino seemed so happy. He was certain the answer would involve TMI. It was better to listen to the zombie's rendition of music that was NOT Celine Dion. It would work out.

While the past couple days had been easier than Jaina had thought they would be, she'd come to a disturbing little realization: she hadn't actually been alone for over a year. Even when she'd been the only one in the room, Zekk had always been close enough to share thoughts. Or when he was too far to share direct thoughts, she'd still had the Colony. And while said realization sort of bothered her, it also meant that her quiet little apartment bothered her more.

At least until the new bugs moved in, and hadn't stopped with the damn music. They had no idea what she meant when she kept throat clicking at them to stop, either, or else they didn't care. There was still no temptation to squish, but there was a desperate need to get out of that apartment and get somewhere sane. So she'd headed to JGOB with her datapad, got herself a pastry and something to drink, and parked herself in a window seat for ease of escape in case she heard anything even slightly French Canadian.

Anyone who accused her of humming was getting hit.

[Open, and she could totes use distractions.]

To some the worst way to change back into a person after Fandom-induced stint as an animal was for it to happen in front of a bunch of people - or one particular one. For Rose, that would have been a cakewalk.

Instead, she turned human again as she lay on the mats at the gym, contentedly chewing on the remnants of the mouse that had just made up her breakfast. Torn between trying not to gag and really, really wanting to barf that up, Rose jumped up, paying no attention to her lack of clothing as she spit out the whisker that stuck to her lip and ran to try to wash the mouse taste out of her mouth.

She was going to be there at the drinking fountain for a while as she tried to forget that any of this ever happened.

There was a moment during the day when Rose happened to glance over at the calendar on the desk and realise that she was only going to have three more shifts at the gym. That the trials were in four weeks, and then her entire future would be determined.

Too much was happening in the next month, and as much as she looked forward to some of it, there was more than a little that she wanted to delay as long as possible. Most of that being what was involved with leaving Fandom for good.

It was too much to think about, and Rose put down the paperwork she'd been attempting to catch up on and went to avail herself of the gym facilities instead. How many pull-ups could she do in a minute? Definitely something that needed to be concentrated on.

He was dealing, but he knew he had to get over this brooding thing soon, or at least learn to cover it. He hated people hovering over him and, let's face it, the emo thing was annoying, even to him.

He settled down behind the bar with a bottle of scotch, figuring that was a step in the right direction to get him in a better mood.

It was quiet in the gym after Dimitri worked through his usual routine. The staff seemed to be giving him a wide berth, which was unusual on Jessi's day. Perhaps she'd seen the dangerous gleam in his eyes as he assaulted the heavy bag. Or maybe it was the intensity and sheer number of sit ups he performed. Whatever it was, Dimitri was fine with Jessi keeping away. He would have to hold his tongue, and as it was, that was going to be a difficult feat if the reason for his ire showed her face. Perhaps her most recent lapse in judgment proved permanent.

In an effort to regain and maintain his sense of inner and outer calm, Dimitri now sat poised on the thick, plush mats, legs crossed with his hands resting on his knees, palms open to the ceiling. Meditation was the key. Deep, even breaths in and out. No thoughts, just a singular focus on his breathing.

How long the quiet lasted would depend on the company, but Atlas was open for business.

Atlas had seen Rose in better moods as she stomped through her duties at the gym. It wasn't anything in particular bugging her. Just the fact that according to radio all sorts of people's dead friends and family had come to the island to visit them, and Rose, who normally hoped that the ghosts would stop coming after her, was left wondering what the fuck. So, you know, no big.

There wasn't really anything to do at the front desk which left Rose spending her day training. Even though a 5am text had canceled formal training today, she was in the mood to kick ass, especially that of the heavy bag that apparently needed to be taught several very violent lessons. Pummeling the bag was great. It kept her from wondering why Mason could visit her as a ghost but not in person. It kept her from wondering what was up with Dimitri being drunk last night and warning her off bees. Yes, not thinking about these things was very, very good.

Even if every few minutes she paused to glance out the doors to see if a sandy-haired boy in a green fleece pullover was out there. He might still come.
[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com
The chance of thunderstorms earlier seemed to have dissipated into a really nice night. The type of night that called for spending an evening on the beach. It wasn't too hot for a fire, but Rose hadn't really bothered so much with one, mostly because gathering wood was boring. And sandy.

Instead the water had turned a glassy grey as the sun started to set behind the island, and Rose was considering if there was a need for a swim. She had her swimsuit on but she hadn't yet gotten up - partially because there was a carton of blueberries and raspberries out on the blanket over the sand that needed to be eaten before sand worked their way into them.

Still, swimming was an interesting idea. She glanced over at the girl she'd dragged along. "Gonna go for a swim or do I get to splash you when I get back out?"

[For the girl there and any others who might happen along!]

There wasn't much in the way of work when it came to the bar this evening (at least not when it came to work Chuck was willing to do), so Chuck settled behind the bar with his usual glass of scotch and was fiddling around with his phone. After so many months, Dimitri really thought he should be immune to Jessi and her special brand of whining.

"Seriously, she just hangs out and then wanders off for an hour and comes back with shopping bags! Not fair!"

It was going to become obvious soon that he was only pretending to be focused intensely on order forms for yoga bands and so Dimitri reached into the desk drawer and surreptitiously put in earplugs. Sometimes having a gun range as part of the facility was useful. "Go shopping if you want, but clock out when you leave," Dimitri told her. Again.

"You so don't care if I'm here or not, do you? Did you forget that we used to have a thing?"

It was like being underwater. Jessi's mouth moved but the sound was drowned out. The quiet was bliss to Dimitri. He swapped the order forms for his book and propped his elbow on the desk to get some quality reading done.

"Um, hell-o? Talking to you over here?"

Atlas Gym was open and strangely quiet.

The good mood Rose was in was helped by the fact that she was expected to go TA on the beach later in the afternoon. Also helping it had been the look on Jessi's face when Rose informed her that she'd have to cover the hour and a half she'd be gone and hanging out on the beach.

Rose was available before and after 5th period. Jessi might be around during that missing hour but she was probably off sulking somewhere.

She had a feeling that today might be a good sales day for booty shorts and swim wear, so she moved a couple of racks closer to the door. Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Atlas was very quiet today. Classical music played softly in the background while Dimitri worked efficiently on the mats with the over-stuffed dummies. Even if there weren't Strigoi active in Fandom, he couldn't very well let his stake-handling skills go sluggish. No matter how much practice he got in with Rose, he still kept up his own training as best he could given the schedule.

Which meant Dimitri had come in early to clean the back room, reorganize the front desk, and check that everything was in order before his trip to Court. It was expected to be a simple trip: show up, visit with colleagues, testify against Victor Dashkov, and return ho--to Fandom.

The workout was really to keep him focused and ready for anything Victor had in store. He flipped the silver stake into the air, silently catching it by the handle and plunging it once more into the dummy - the point slipping past the fake ribcage and straight into the plush heart.

Atlas was open for business.

When Dimitri arrived at the gym, he was greeted immediately by a high-pitched scream emanating from the back room. The keys in his hand hit the floor as he raced across the main room, leaping over equipment rather than wasting time going around. Bursting through the door, he came to an abrupt stop, unsure if he should succomb to the urge to laugh or leave.

Jessi sat on the stool in front of the laundry counter, body wrapped in what appeared to be a huge cocoon of towels...dirty towels if Dimitri was judging by the stench. "Oh thank God it's you! They wo--" A towel jumped to cover her mouth and the muffled eww-ing was made more evident by the look in Jessi's eyes.

If the towels hadn't seemed to be tensing (or looking tempted by the new arrival), Dimitri might not have looked around for a solution to this living whites issue and noticed the conveniently prepared washing machine bubbling with suds. Fandom was always so giving with these things. "Are you rethinking the choice not to do any laundry while Rose and I were gone last week?" Dimitri inquired, already prepared to attack the towels regardless of her answer. Luckily, Jessi's head moved a millimeter against the strain of her bindings.

The movement was enough and Dimitri reached and quickly peeled a towel from her side, causing the thing to immediately wrap itself around his forearm and begin squeezing like a boa constrictor. He'd hoped to toss the terrible towel into the washer, but with it clinging on there wasn't much choice. He plunged his arm into the soapy water and the towel seemed to sigh, sinking happily to the bottom.

Dimitri eyed the fifty or so towels still writhing around Jessi. "Lather, rinse, repeat," he murmured, setting to work at this new task.

Have no fear, he left the towel covering her mouth to the very last. It was a strategy to keep Jessi from invoking the rage of any more linens. Really.

Since she'd gotten sprung from the clinic earlier, Rose had been concentrating on trying to push away the ghosts she could feel were present. It seemed to work - or at least she wasn't getting headaches or seeing them so she was counting it as a win - though the effort to concentrate was a little bit tiring.

That wasn't going to be a problem though. If this was what had to be done now, she'd just deal with it.

Dimitri had insisted on meeting back up in the evening - to check on her and make sure she wasn't crazier than usual, Rose assumed. But it wasn't like she'd turn it down, and she insisted in turn that what she really needed was ice cream. Because she hadn't gotten a lollipop at the Clinic of course.

Chilly Boulder it was then, and Rose stood studying the menu carefully. This was a big decision after all.

Tuesdays never were Rose's favourite day what with the lack of time to sleep between guarding Adrian, training, and working at Atlas. This Tuesday though was going to go down in history as being a much, much worse than usual Tuesday.

Nearly all the lights were off in the gym along with the radio, and Rose wasn't even pretending to work. She sat at the desk, her head in her hands as she tried ignore the headache that had built up to nearly the worst pain she'd ever had in her life. The air felt like it was pressing in on her head as her brain throbbed from inside her skull. Something flashed in her field of vision, and Rose looked over, but nothing except the gym was there. There was another flash of blackness, this one almost looked like wings. Unless Jessi had let a bird in the gym again, she had to just be imagining it.

The pain went on and on and even the tylenol and Coke she'd chugged didn't put a dent in it. Shadowy shapes kept flitting through her vision, making her flinch every so often as one looked like a skull or a face or a bird.

Finally it had been enough, and after yelling at Jessi a third time for offering to 'adjust her neck,' Rose gave in. Something about this whole thing wasn't right, and if she had to dare the clinic to find out, she'd do that.

The gym was still open. Rose had fled.

Adrian got into work almost on time for once, which somehow felt wrong considering he might have still been a little hungover from this morning. He got in, made himself a drink he wasn't touching yet, lit a cigarette and Tino did nothing weird.

Every business had to have a normal day of work every once in a while.

Atlas Gym - Tuesday

The information about Victor Dashkov's trial - and the fact that she and Lissa were apparently not allowed to go - turned over and over in Rose's head. There had to be a way. Maybe if Dimitri spoke to someone else or if Lissa did. But she didn't want to worry Lissa with this information without having a solution for her first, and...

Rose worked halfheartedly, washing down the mats and barely even responding to Jessi's snide comments about the new girlfriend who was emailing Dimitri. There had to be a way to get them there to make sure that Victor Dashkov was locked up forever.

So, Adrian brought the kitten in to work today. He hadn't wanted to, but it seemed intent on destroying anything in its path today and rather than leave it in his room to do so, he brought it here. Hey, at least Tino was here to clean up anything it ruined, right?

Of course the second they got there, the kitten curled up and went to sleep on a towel or rag, or something. Which just figured.

And upon seeing that, Tino just stopped talking to Adrian for the rest of the night.

Now Showing:
McLincock!

He likes his whiskey hard...his women soft...and his west all to himself!

When he heard what the theater was showing, Dimitri had decided a classic Duke film was just what Rose needed to see in order to better understand why Westerns were not romance novels. And while he could easily rent his favorites anytime, this was on the big screen and that made a difference somehow.

He hadn't gone inside yet with the hope that his message had gotten to Rose in time and she was feeling available enough to let him take her out in public. It was a small step and if she was still concerned about rodents even after all the weirdness of the week, well, he'd simply take the heat. There would be no bribing.

But there might be popcorn.

[McLintock! is a horribly racist and sexist Western with an exclamation mark in the title and available online! Meta name due to typo that stuck. MST3K is open but free from OCD.]

The gym felt overly quiet when Dimitri finally settled in at the front desk. So far there were no jazzercise classes blaring music to make his ears weep with the thump of whatever that not-jazz-at-all music was called. Patrons were in luck that Dimitri was choosing the afternoon music and he'd found a local Country-Western station before logging on to check his email. He'd hoped for more information about the Dashkov trial situation as he clicked through messages from coworkers, but the only interesting thing he found was from his youngest sister.

And her message was quite the surprise. )

The quiet feeling in the gym suddenly died. "Whatcha reading?" Jessi cut in, sticking her large, blonde head over Dimitri's shoulder. "Ooh, is that from your girlfriend?"

Dimitri frowned and clicked his reply window closed, deciding Viktoria could wait until later. "No, just my sister."

"That's what they all say," Jessi sing-songed, giving him a wink as she slung her bag over her shoulder and headed for the workout rooms. Dimitri missed the quiet already.

Tuesdays weren't Rose's favourite days right now. Sure, she was still thrilled to be human again, but between not getting much sleep on Monday nights and then training and working all day, visitors to the gym weren't going to find her in the best mood.

Something that Jessi had already discovered while playing her Miley Cyrus albums just a little too loudly for Rose's state of mind.

Adrian was trying something new today. Bored with his usual, he just fixed himself a drink at random, one he'd never tried before. At least, one he could never remember trying.

Since that didn't kill him, he thought maybe his next drink would be something more random. But till he got to that point, he'd just be behind the bar, "working."

[*fixes a thing, la*

Around, but it took me 40 minutes to write this post, so I might be a little slow.]

If Dimitri was speaking about it to anyone, he'd have to admit there was nothing very interesting about his tasks at the gym, other than when he was working out or when people stopped in for their own training. This day was no different, but rather than be bored, he set himself to the task of refitting the training dummies with an extra layer of padding in their chest cavity.

Rose could consider the enhanced dummies a special surprise for when she resumed her training. Thinking of Rose, Dimitri realized he'd not seen a certain feisty bobcat in quite a few hours. A glance toward the doors had him wondering for a fleeting moment what she was up to out there, but given the things he'd witnessed the bobcat doing over the last week, Dimitri felt he could be better off not knowing. So he resumed his task, humming along with the overhead music.

Clearly engineering dummies called for an 80s soundtrack.

Atlas Gym | Thursday Day

It was a strange day at Atlas: The equipment was clean. The paperwork was in order. There were no instructors snapping gum at the front desk.

This could have been concerning, but Dimitri was willing to accept the strange peace when it occurred. Catching up on his reading seemed just the thing to pass the time and he found a spot on the mats where he could see the doors and listen for anyone he could need to avoid.

Strange didn't necessarily equate to bad. It was Fandom, after all.
