Mary found a ton of paperwork for her when she got to the front desk. There were people who checked in, people who checked out, records that needed to be updated, purchase orders from Gunther that needed to be approved, a package that was buzzing...

That definitely got Mary's attention. She opened the box to find that Delinda Deline had sent her a Frisky Ferret for her birthday, and the thing was vibrating. Mary took out the batteries, stashed the box under the desk, and tried to pretend that she hadn't seen the thing.

Gunther was working again because the redhead was too distraught to work. He mumbled something to the sous chef about Mary and morning sickness, but didn't elaborate further.

And like any bit of completely untrue gossip, the news spread like wildfire through the NPC hotel staff.

Mary was a little late getting to work this morning. For one thing, she was still crashing at Mike's apartment and he didn't have a hair dryer, so it took Mary a while to get ready. Then there was the fact that her undies had disappeared in the middle of the night, which made it much harder to get dressed.

And finally, when she made her way over to the hotel, she was stunned to find that they were no longer in chilly, rainy France but in some kind of tropical paradise. She'd really love to get out there and explore it, but today was going to be a busy day at the Arms Hotel.

There was a notice posted at the front desk:

Attention guests! Starting today, minibars will only be stocked by request only. Please pick up your new minibar keys from the front desk.

When Mary walked into the lobby, Gunther looked at her suspiciously. "Vhat are you doing here? The other girl works today," he said.

"Oh, I talked to Hoshi and we switched days," explained Mary. "That way George Michael and I both have the same day off."

Gunther didn't seem happy about it. He stomped off to the kitchen, muttering in German.

Like any other Monday morning, Mary was at the front desk, getting head start on all of her weekly paperwork.

D'Argo did open Caritas tonight. Of course, as he had no AU children wandering around, he had no idea how many people might need to get really really plastered today.

[Will mainly be doing kid stuff, so mod Tino if you want fast service.]

Mary realized that Gunther was probably getting frustrated with her. He was trying to pitch the idea of hosting a wine tasting at the hotel, but she wasn't paying attention. She was doodling her name on a piece of scratch paper and thinking once more about whether or not she should take George Michael's last name once they got married. She had been all set to keep her own name, but the more she thought about it, the more she felt that George Michael would really like it if she used his name.

Not that Mary was going to tell him or anyone else yet. It might make a good last-minute wedding present for her new husband if she couldn't come up with anything else.

[identity profile] montecito-east.livejournal.com

There was no one at the front desk today. Instead, Mary was sitting on one of the couches in the lobby, going over that wedding insurance policy one more time before she signed it. Okay, make that two or three times. Gunther, meanwhile, was keeping her supplied with tea and cucumber sandwiches.

D'Argo was there at Caritas tonight. He just was spending pretty much the entire night trying to tape up the zombies again whenever body parts would start falling off.

When an arm fell off of two at once, he looked at them, duct tape in hand, and asked, "Really?"

So it was Tino behind the bar tonight. Mostly because he'd refused to do this part.

Mary was nibbling on a cucumber sandwich while browsing online for flower girl dresses. Her little sisters Ashley and Ariel had been all excited about the wedding and Mary couldn't wait to see them again.

Gunther should have been setting up the buffet, but he left all of it for his sous chef while he looked over Mary's shoulder and pointed out the dresses he liked. Finally Mary just glared at him and he left.

Robin still kind of had no idea how she'd wound up doing this, but it was funny and she could laugh and drink and just enjoy her post-Valentine's glow behind the bar while everyone else suffered.

And in the meanwhile, she set out a pretty little sign.

Three Minute Dates @ Caritas
Hosted by Robin Scherbatsky
Presented by loneliness and desperation*
* beer goggles recommended/necessary in some cases

That done, she wandered by to the stage to take the mic. "So, hi. You know how sometimes you're at a bar, and you just don't know how to talk to those pretty people you're eyeing? Or, you know, you want to know what the deal is with that creepy guy in the corner who won't stop staring? Well, tonight, we're taking all that guesswork out of it! Welcome to Three Minute Dates! I'm your hostess and deeply amused bartender, Robin Scherbatsky."

"So here's how it goes -- when I call your name plus someone else's, it'll be time for you to find that other person and either lemon law them or find your way to true love...slash a good one night stand! Or a bad one. It's part of the fun! And then lather, rinse and repeat for four more times, because yes, boys and girls, you're doing this five times."

[OOC: Three minutes equals ten comments for our purposes. That's five comments per person. Try your very best to get it wrapped up in that time. You do NOT have to do these in chronological order. Do them as people are available. Just try not to Joss yourself.

Remember, if you're violent, you'll be teleported out of the club and will have to make your way back. If you can't get through all of your dates today, you can sp, don't worry!

Normally, Ghanima would do her training outside, moving on the sand that was and was-not home.  However, today she was going to train against live blades, and did not want to risk a student getting injured.  These machines were awake, and they were thirsty.  To go against less defeated the purpose of such training.

Those attacking blades could maim and they would kill.  But the finest swordsmen in the Imperium never went against more than seven.

Alia's record was eleven, before Paul had vanished into the desert.  After that, she had never again danced with the blades.

Ghanima set her two hooks carefully on the floor of the gym before beginning.  Today, she was working with ten.

Town hall seemed to have gone through a transformation for one evening as both security forces had outdone themselves. The ballroom had been made to look like the inside of a log cabin, a rather large log cabin at that, but still a log cabin. The walls were temporarily covered with woodwork and the decorative fireplaces had finally been put to use, casting a warm light on the rest of the room. The usual tables and seats to the side of the room had been replaced by comfortable, squishy couches. The middle of the hall was left open so there was plenty of room for people to dance.

Of course, there still were wooden tables covered with food and drinks spread along the length of the room. There was hot cider, mulled wine, gingerbread, apple pie and tarts with whipping cream and cider donuts,... Pumpkins, squashes and oranges with cloves were used at decorations. The tables away from the fireplaces and closer to the cooler dancefloor had been made to look like they were snowed under and the windows had been covered with fake snow and ice crystals to establish the winter theme.

It was something different.

((Up early for timezones and slowplay! As indicated before, this time it's adults only. So enjoy not having to watch yourself for ankle biters! If there's a need for it, a second post will be thrown up later.

Mary had her suitcase sitting open on the front desk that morning. She'd gotten someone from housekeeping to do her laundry for her and was putting clothes neatly in the suitcase just as soon as they were done. Sometimes it was really nice to have people working for you.

She had no idea how much to pack since she had no idea how long she'd have to stay, but finally Mary gave up worrying and admitted that she could always buy what she needed in Las Vegas. She also wondered if she could persuade George Michael to go with her to the Policeman's Ball tonight. She had an early morning portal and wouldn't be able to stay too late, but it would be enjoyable.

Mary was in a really, really good mood, even if her boyfriend was going away for a few days. Her good mood probably had something to do with extra special good-bye she had given him, but her lips were sealed on that matter.

She walked into the kitchen, thinking of asking Gunther to put together a picnic basket for her to take to the park, when she noticed Gunther and his sous chef devouring bags of chocolate chips. "What's going on?" she asked. Gunther whined about how he felt so unappreciated while the sous chef cried about how no one even knew his name.

Mary was at the front desk, putting the finishing touches on her present for George Michael. She was in a very good mood and there wasn't anything that could possibly ruin this Christmas for her, not even the prospect of spending time with his family.

Even with the absence of Gunther's gingerbread monstrosity, the lobby still looked festive. Gunther had gone overboard setting up a magnificent Christmas tree decorated with hand-blown glass ornaments, twinkling lights, popcorn garlands and a lovely star at the top. There was even a little train set circling the tree. It was amazing that he even found time to cook.

The memorial service was held on the flat hilltop overlooking the ocean, and at its edge rested an old-fashioned wooden boat, worn and weathered. There were chairs for those still too weak to stand and four torches, burning steadily, set in the ground at the four cardinal points. The day was bright and clear, a light breeze blowing out to sea, but despite that, the torches never flickered.

Karal, dressed in formal robes of black and gold, stood in front of the boat, waiting patiently while people arrived.

When everyone had settled, he stepped forward and began to speak. )

Katara was almost completely unconscious in a cot but the Town Hall's makeshift hospital was ticking over like a well-oiled machine.  Even as volunteers and doctors grew more and more tired, their dedication still won out as each patient was tended to carefully.

Christian hated feeling this helpless. The number of patients were growing, and nothing was relieving their symptoms. Even the kids with their magic mumbo jumbo could only bring fevers down for a short time.

He didn't want to admit defeat, but things were not looking good.

It was noon, a time sacred to Vkandis when the sun was highest in the sky. The rain hid it from view, but Karal knew it was there. Like everyone else, he was exhausted, but there was something he had to do.

He was the only priest on this island. He had a duty. And he was beginning to believe that prayer was about the only thing left.

After a brief stint in the library, he'd returned to his room, changed into his robes, and returned to the Town Hall. Not to the clinic, though. Instead, he appropriated a room just down from it and set to work.

It was now lit with the soft glow of candlelight, shining into the hallway through the open door. Anyone looking in would see Karal, head bowed, and hear the soft liquid sounds of Karsite as he prayed.

He hoped that anyone who needed to would find their way there.

[ooc: Room appropriated with permission. Open to anyone who might want to pray, or meditate, or hope, or just sit somewhere quiet for awhile. Minor OCD for the sake of convenience

Christian was upset when he found out one of the kids had died the day before and was pissed at himself for taking the day off. The island had been through a lot while he'd been here, but one of the kids dying was unacceptable. He was frustrated by his inability to reach anyone outside the island. No ordering more supplies, no consulting with contagious disease experts. If it had only been the adults sick he might have been trying to head for the hills to save his own ass, but he wasn't about to abandon the kids. They had to find a way to stop this. Especially because now a baby was sick.

"I like what you've done with the place, Mary, but Gunther and I were just talking about how this would all flow better if we made some changes," replied Ed. Gunther was nodding enthusiastically.

Mary noticed something clipped to Gunther's belt. "Is that a cell phone? Gunther, since when do you have a cell phone?" she asked.

"Oh, that was another idea I had. You remember those cell phone/two-way radios we had in the casino? I got one for every member of your staff here," responded Ed, handing her a new phone. "You know what else? I noticed that you were juggling that clipboard all day yesterday, so I got you a PDA as well. Now, Gunther, back to that discussion we were having about changing the menu..."

She really didn't pay too much attention when Gunther came out of the kitchen and asked if she would try out the new milkshakes he was making. Mary was absentmindedly sipping the milkshake when she started having trouble holding onto her pen. Why? Because her hands were turning into little kitten paws.

"Not again," moaned Gunther as Mary the kitten scampered off her chair and went to play in the open expanse of the lobby. But just as quickly as she changed into a kitten, Mary transformed back into her normal shape. With all the dignity she could muster, Mary got up off the floor, tugged at her dress until it was in place, and calmly said to Gunther, "This town is completely bizarre."

When Mary woke up Monday morning in a strange place and realized what she had done, she quickly pulled on her clothes and got out of there. She did not take the money because she was not that kind of girl. In fact, she was in such a hurry that she left her undergarments behind. She raced back to the hotel, hoping that she could quickly get to her room without any of her staff catching her doing the walk of shame.

It was a futile attempt, as Gunther was already in the lobby overseeing a special delivery for the cocktail party tomorrow evening. He looked at her, mumbled a rude comment in German, and asked if she would like to help. At least the chaos of directing delivery traffic in and out of the lobby served as a distraction, though it kept Mary in the lobby without a chance to change out of her dress from last night. Mary wasn't sure if anyone would be coming by for afternoon tea today, but she still set up anyway. Rather, she sat down and read through her mail while Gunther and his faithful sous chef set up for afternoon tea. After that little incident with the milk pitcher, Mary wasn't taking any chances.

There was an envelope from Las Vegas today. Mary eagerly tore it open to find an information packet about a conference held by a hotel industry trade association. Samantha Marquez had included her own note: "Mary, I'm going to this! It's in Washington D.C. next weekend. You have to come too!"

Mary squealed and started dancing around the lobby. "Gunther, I'm going to see Sam next weekend!" she yelled to the chef, who grinned when he heard the news.

Mary had a pretty bad hangover, but she still managed to make it to her shift on time. She dimmed all the lights in the lobby, took a couple aspirin for her headache, and collapsed into her chair at the front desk while Gunther brought her a pitcher of water and a glass of ice. "Just keep it coming, I guess," said Mary. "Think you could do me a huge favor, Gunther? I have Stan's cookout tonight and the cookies I made yesterday didn't turn out so well."

Gunther made a face. "I heard," he said. "I listen to radio last night."

"Oh no," said Mary, covering her face. "You mean everyone knows about my wild tequila cookie experiment?" She was about to swear of tequila for the rest of her life when she noticed Gunther looking at her with pity. It wasn't like him. "What's wrong?" she asked.

"I listen to radio last night," Gunther repeated.

"Is there something that I should know about?" asked Mary. Gunther leaned over and whispered something in her ear that nearly made Mary's eyes pop out of their sockets. "No way! They really said that? Maybe it was a mistake. You know that sometimes the radio doesn't exactly get it right?" she suggested.

"I never liked him," said Gunther, looking angry. He directed the sous chef to put out the specials board while he continued to fuss over Mary.
