Since there was no need for a mid-summer welcome picnic, the administration had splashed out on this one: the tables (located under giant tents) were groaning with sidedishes from corn on the cob to potato chips to baked beans to several dodgy-looking jello salads and the grills were set up along the beach cooking chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs and veggie burgers. There was an ice cream sundae bar, watermelons, enough lemonade and ice tea to swim in (please don't swim in it), coolers for more adult beverages if you were an adult or sneaky about it, and areas roped off for tug of war and relay races and pick-up softball games if people were in the mood to be more active than just stuffing their faces and waiting for it to get dark.

The music was playing loudly--one of the more esoteric of the zombie band's offerings--and the sun was shining. It's hot, it's humid. It's the 4th of July and there's plenty of free food to go around. Come on over!

It was the first day of summer and we're going to act like the weather cooperated for the duration of this party and with nothing too terrible happening lately- at least in Fandom- so the way Kitty figured, that was enough reason to get together and do something fun.

The pool was clean and ready for people to actually use, there was food and drink set out and upbeat music playing, and hopefully it was late enough in the day that those who had to work or who were daylight challenged weren't going to be put out. And Kitty wouldn't actually kick anyone out if they didn't wear a bathing suit. She just wanted to make sure people made an effort.

They did have to wear clothes, though.

[Because it's been too quiet on the weekends. Open party!]

Normally, Riley wasn't a big fan of heat. It just made his glasses fog up and made him sweat and uncomfortable. He much preferred the heat of a server room or, even better, his air conditioned apartment but, amazingly enough, he was outside today.

It hadn't been that hot when he'd gone out earlier and it didn't look like rain so Riley decided to take the chance. He'd lugged his laptop out of the park was currently stretched out on a bench, picking up WiFi from somewhere. After a quick scroll through the news and his emails, Riley decided to get down to business.

And by business he meant hacking something harmless yet fun. He left everything on the island alone because he didn't need any problems there but hacking a mainland subway system to give out free rides wasn't bad, right? They charged too much anyway.

Riley snickered and waited to see how long it took them to notice what he'd done.

[Open town post too]

Anakin came to the school because he'd been called about a delivery to his office. It turned out to be crates full cinnamon buns, Wookiee cookies, and sausages.

So. Many. Sausages.

Anakin didn't remember ordering any of this stuff, and there was enough of it to feed dozens, so there was now an impromptu beach party going on, complete with cantina music, as Anakin cooked up all the food.

Watch out for the way the sun glared off of the water--it was a little lens-flarey.

Sometimes, sitting inside his apartment and messing around on his laptop bored even Riley. Even though it looked like it was going to start pouring any minute, Riley had pulled himself off his comfortable couch and a really tepid episode of The Price is Right so he could head into town.

He'd never been inside Fast Eddie's before and with the promise of a video arcade within, he couldn't really resist going in there now. He didn't want to bowl (those shoes, man!) and he wasn't really hungry but he could feed quarters into the various arcade games and be happy for a few hours...

...until he started losing and actually kicked one of the machines. But, not hard enough to break anything or earn a reprimand from the staff. Riley took a few deep breaths and fed another quarters into the machine. He was going to beat this damn game on this quarter.

Then, he died again.

Okay, he was going to beat this game on this quarter! He meant that this time!

Now that everyone had survived graduation, it was time to celebrate with brunch foods!

Shhh, tasty traditions were important.

There were tables and chairs set up in the park, along with a buffet of moddable brunch foods. Hopefully, anyone nursing a hangover or multiple hickeys could hide that business in front of their loved ones!

With his class completed for the semester, Riley actually had some free time that wasn't being consumed by editing his book or making lesson plans. So, it seemed like the perfect time to get out of his apartment and go into town.

Of course, he'd brought a book to read after getting something tall and caffeinated. He was still working hard to not think about the things on Horizon because he didn't want to have some panic attack or end up with nightmares or hallucinations. He wasn't really built for stuff like that. He didn't regret going or helping but still, he was a nerd and that had been...intense.

Riley found a spot near a window and opened up his book, skimming a few paragraphs but mostly just resting and enjoying his drink. He'd already submitted a class for summer so it looked like he was sticking around a little longer.

Hadn't expected that to happen when he'd first arrived. But, he liked this place.

Flash had just arrived in town a little bit ago and he already seemed a little annoyed about something. "Kiernan warns me about weird stuff, but not about stairs. That's helpful," he muttered as he rolled up to the counter to order a coffee.

Once he got past his grumbling, he had to admit that Fandom seemed nice. Quiet, so far. Smaller than he expected, though. Not that it was a complaint. That meant that if everything went FUBAR, at least it would probably be manageable.

After the barista handed his coffee over, Flash rolled to a table and looked out the window to people-watch while he went over his game plan:

Find a place to stay for a few days. Figure out who knows something about powerful magic. See if they can find and perform some kind of spell to remove a Hellmark placed on him by one of the most powerful devils around.

Simple, right? Sure it was! At least that's what Flash was going to keep telling himself. And hey, this coffee was pretty good. Things were looking up at the moment!

Riley had, naturally, been a little concerned about his car once everything on the island seemed to be settling down. He hadn't gotten a chance to get out of the parking lot until just now and, when he saw that his darling car was all right, he breathed a deep sigh of relief.

He ran a hand over the car's curves reverently (and not at all creepily) before he jumped into the driver's seat and gripped the steering wheel. He was really, really gonna have to take a joyride and soon. His car hadn't been used enough since he'd gotten to the island. It was really just too bad the roads here were too narrow because his car would tear up the curves and dips.

For now, he was content just sitting in his car and relaxing.

[Open post, of course, if other people have a reason to be in the parking lot. He just missed his car.]

Today Tino was trying to attempt bar tricks he'd seen this week on The Amazing Race. It involved pouring several stacked glasses of colored liquor into a pyramid of glasses.

So after the second time he'd spilled everything all over and broken a couple glasses, Kitty told him he was paying for any damages and decided she'd encourage people over to this side of the bar, where it was safe.

There wasn't a ton of time to clean everything up after Cade's funeral, but the time for grieving had come and gone and now it was time for a wedding! In the same place where a teenger had just been eulogized! Happy times!

The place was done up all pretty, because even if it was Jaina's- ...third? Fifth? Who really kept track of these things anymore- wedding, Skywalkers spared no expense.

You were free to place bets on what was going to happen this time.

[Yes, another wedding! Open to all!]

When Kitty had planned this party she'd just figured that it'd be a good way for people to mingle, especially since there were new people on the island now. She hadn't thought that there'd be powers weirdness going on, though really, there were probably a few people who could use a drink and/or assurances this would be back to normal in the morning.

At least, it'd better be normal in the morning. Did you hear that, Fandom?

The place had been all prettied up, the back room had been blocked off for party purposes, and if you got a drink there was a good chance that you had a macramed drink cozy along with it because if you gained a new skill you might as well use it or whatever, right?

[Open party!]

Right, so Kitty had no idea what had happened today, but she'd gotten to hit things and hopefully never had to hear Handsome Jack's voice again so she was going to call it a success.

And since they'd come to the end of a traumatic week, Kitty went to open the bar, just in case anyone felt the need to drink, or wtf, or stress that they hadn't had time to prep for finals.

The glitter was relatively modest for the brunch, by Fandom terms -- which still left enough on the statues moved over from the dance and other decorations to blind a small child. Italian opera played softly to match the classical theme, and space heaters had been set up under the tent to fight the late-October chill. It was, overall, a tasteful arrangement -- at least, if you ignored that the classical figures were wearing glitter underwear.

Fandom, enjoy the end of Homecoming 2013.

So the thing about deciding to follow the directions of your at least semi-sentient magical harp (with occasional chiming in from your as-far-as-you-always-knew-not-actually-sentient-or-magical guitar) was that after awhile, you started to remember that neither said harp nor said guitar actually had eyes, and thus couldn't actually know that they were leading you down a really long road across open water to what looked like it might possibly be an evil magical citadel.

Roland really hoped that the harp hadn't decided it really missed the world of the Dark and was making him take it home. It didn't seem likely; he was pretty sure the balance of Light and Dark was all fixed now, but still. That was definitely a castle, and while he certainly wouldn't put building a random castle just outside of Baltimore past some enterprising American, it really didn't seem like it fit what he knew of the city.

Of course, what he knew of the city basically came down to "they have a baseball team", so.

He stalled out a bit at the end of the causeway, staring up towards the castle, only barely managing to take in the details of the town that led up to it. The harp had finally quieted down, so he supposed this was, in fact, where she wanted him to end up, but that didn't mean he was going to go exploring before he at least managed to work out whether or not the place was inhabited by evil elves.

[ooc: And the townie I've had in mind for three years finally makes it to town. Open post, sure!]

This was Riley's idea of exciting night life. An open laptop, a huge cup of coffee and a gigantic muffin sitting on the table of the local coffee shop. He was there, feet kicked up in an empty chair and fingers busily typing away on the first draft of his book. It was coming along pretty well and he was daydreaming about becoming a bestselling author with girls on each arm and a house that would dwarf Ben's.

He tried to keep himself grounded in reality though since his book hadn't even been written and it could be a major flop. But, it was hard not to imagine being something amazing and having photographers snapping his picture and fans wanting his autograph.

Riley smiled to himself and took a sip of the coffee...and nearly spit it out.

"That is hot," he said, fanning his tongue and wincing in pain. He was truly the portrait of a future bestselling author.

The zombies were apparently trying to jazz things up a bit. Not only was the music more upbeat- and not terrible, as long as you didn't mind the occasional bad chord as a finger fell off- but they were trying some new dance moves tonight. That part wasn't going so well at all, as after being dead this long, their coordination was not really the best.

Finally after the fourth time one of them fell or bumped into something, Kitty grabbed the duct tape from behind the counter and handed it to Tino, because taping them up was just going to be his job tonight. Perks of being the boss.

[Finally home! And home sick! Play with me!]
