Kaidan had spent the wee small hours of the morning teaching Hernando how to properly use a Yooper Scooper and standard snow shovel. Then there'd been an impromptu snowball fight. After, he hiked back to the CIC, clearing the sidewalks on both sides of the street between the two buildings as he went. Had shovels, was travelling.

Snow was cleared from the walk and from the back stairs. Then he went up and proactively shoveled and salted the roof, especially around the shuttle's docking legs and door. "You going to be ok up here alone EDI?" he asked.

"I am a shuttle, Kaidan," EDI responded, amused, "The weather doesn't bother me."

That wasn't what he'd meant. "Well, I'm only a comm call away," he assured her.

"Shuttle, Kaidan," she reminded him, still amused.

He patted the shuttle door anyway before heading inside to do battle with IKEA furniture.

Unfolding the directions, he frowned at them. "Good god, what even is this?"

It was going to be a day.

Vette might have been maybe the tiniest bit late coming in to work tonight.

The eensiest bit.

The most smidgen of a bit.

... A few hours. Vette was a few hours late coming in to work tonight, and so it was fortunate that the raven had picked up the slack for her before she finally came in, a bag of Mooby's under one arm and a look on her face that said that she had a lot of food for thought to go over, besides.

Earth had a really boring solar system, for starters. There was nobody out there, which she had been told before, sure, but it actually managed to make her feel a little bit more alone when it was right there to be seen in person, with hyperspace coordinates that suggested that maybe the owner of the ship had taken one look out past the Sol system and had decided that there wasn't even a point in going on.

So she was maybe weirdly quiet as she settled in behind the counter with a few more mooby burgers than were strictly necessary and a pile of severely busted phones that she was going to throw herself into cobbling together into at least one functional phone if she could manage it, so help her. She mollified the raven by giving it a whole burger to pick at as thanks for covering for the first half of her shift, and then she set to work, tinkering in between bites of burger or pausing to go bully the Friday regulars into taking their breaks and drinking some kriffing water.

This had been an exhausting week. She was grateful it was almost over so she could move right along to dreading whatever next week had in store, next.

Prompto never really thought he'd be uncomfortable going to his job where he basically got to play video games all day, and yet there they were. After this weekend, he was just so restless, like he was afraid of slipping back into that sad, lonely kid he'd been if he spent more than ten minutes in front of something that wasn't productive. So sitting behind the desk at the C.I.C. that evening was difficult. Impossible. He managed to stick in his chair for maybe ten minutes at at time, a little longer if he was updating something on his farm, but then he'd start bouncing, his hands would start drumming on the desk, and he'd have to get up. He had to move around. He went and checked on all the rooms about a billion times, started going through accessories and reorganizing them, only to organize them back to the way they were, finding spare parts and spreading them out to shift through them and maybe sometimes try to put them together, but abandoning them halfway through, and one corner of the room definitely became an impromptu gym, where he killed some time with some push-up and even tried to get all extra about it with the whole one-handed or the no-hands-clap-when-you-come-up ones. Jogging in place. Time to check on the rooms again. Wonder what Kaidan might think about maybe installing a pull-up bar in here somewhere for days like this where just sitting on his ass all day was going to drive him absolutely insane.

And the raven wasn't any help, either, no surprise there. It just sort of perched there the whole time, watching him, making him all too aware of every single minute that ticked by when he wasn't doing something he could deem productive.

Ugh! Why did his dumb stupid brain have to be like this, anyway, huh?

Prompto was expecting a pretty quiet day at the C.I.C. that evening. Definitely more normal than last week, at any rate; you could practically feel the relief washing off of him like tidal wave when he walked in to find everything was working and running as smoothly as could be, that things were staying solid, that tools and controllers weren't turning into leeks, for crying out loud. He'd even sort of solved the mystery of the knife from the other day (not in any satisfying way, though; it had been sitting in the sink the next morning, as if he hadn't thoroughly searched the thing), so that wasn't bugging him out or anything anymore.

Well, it kind of was. He'd checked. It hadn't been there. Where had it gone to just...reappear exactly where he'd been looking for it?

Overall, though, it wasn't like it was a real big deal, and there were farms to check on and newbs to mow down, and Prompto settled in at the desk with the intent to have a well-deserved normal day.

Vette had had some wild dreams last night, of being a starship captain with her own ship, of doing some tricky stunt flying to get through a barricade to a war-torn planet. Why she would ever want to go to a war-torn planet was anybody's best guess. As much as she liked excitement, that seemed a little over the top.

Being a captain with her own ship would be pretty neat, though.

It had her thoughtfully considering what games she would like to play tonight, after she was finished working her way through a few repairs. Something with starships, probably. Maybe she could just find herself some kind of pilot sim and play around with that a little, dream the big dream and all that...

If the world outside was glitching this much, you'd better believe all the games inside the C.I.C. were just going bonkers.

And Prompto, coming down hard after the pure joy that was stunt chocobo riding, was trying his very best to try and fix it, wondering if some sort of virus or something got into all the graphic cards, rendering everything virtually unplayable. Hilariously so, more often than not, that was true, but it was really only cute for about the first fifteen minutes, and then it just got frustrating.

Also frustrating? Disappearing tools. Or tools that were in his hand a second ago, and then somehow shifted to just being a few inches out of his grip. Or tools that were suddenly something very not useful: he'd gotten a hairbrush for a few minutes, a spatula, a leek! His hand going straight through the computer he was trying to poke at, he was pretty sure there were two of him for a few minutes there, too, and he didn't even want to talk about when all of a sudden he had no body and was just sort of a floating head for a bit.

It didn't help, either, that the raven kept popping up in random spots throughout the store, and when it opened its mouth to caw, it sounded more like a chicken than anything else. Or sometimes a dog. Prompto was pretty sure that was at least one moo-cow in there, too.

It was entirely possible that Vette was coming in to work today looking a little bit like she had flat-out murdered somebody. Yes, the heist on the offices had gone down yesterday morning, but she really didn't want to stain Nina's clothing with anything if she could help it, and the fake blood was turning out to be a little bit more tricky to remove even from her skin than she might have hoped.

Which meant that she was absolutely having fun with the Friday usuals, just sitting behind the counter and affixing them with a silent stare as they made their way into the gaming rooms they tended to camp on between awkward as heck bouts of checking out the pretty blue girl behind the counter.

The fact that the raven was once again perched on her shoulder really brought the whole look together, she thought.

"So it worked?"

Prompto Argentum, fully geared up and ready with his headset and controller, the comfiest of all the chairs in the place, surrounded by bags of snacks and bottles of soda, was clearly prepared for an evening of epic 'hard work' that Tuesday at the C.I.C., grinning stupidly at his monitor at the main desk.

"Of course it worked," Noctis's voice came back to him through the headset. "I still can't believe you spent your birthday money buying a gaming system for me."

"Worth it!" Prompto sang back. "What's the point in kicking ass, taking names, stomping on newbs with all these Earth games if I can't do it with my best friend? I'm just glad I was able to rig up something to work with our tech, but it helps that, you know, it's not really that diff--oh, hey! Watch your six, you've got--nice!"

"Thanks; I think I might be finally getting the hang of this."

"Yeah, maybe in a few weeks, I might even be able to stop carrying your ass all around the map."

"Right, because who had the higher kill score the last few games?"

"Glitch! I had a glitch! Also, a customer, I am technically working right now, you know."

"You are such a nerd."

"Hey, I may be a nerd, but at least I'm not a dork."

"Hey, I may be a dork, but at least I'm no---ugh, crap. Iggy's home, he's probably going to start getting on my case about homework."

"Iggy can go suck a chocobo egg."

"...Is that Prompto?"

"Hiiiiiiiii, Igniiiiiiiiiis!"

"Yeah, and so do I, and it won't be all night, the C.I.C. isn't open all night, just most of--Aww, crap! That was a sucker shot! Iggy! Stop distracting me!"

"But I--ugh, never mind. I'm going to prepare dinner; I hope your Highness can tear himself away long enough at least to eat?"

"Yeah, sure, whatever."

"I mean, like, it's not that I have no ideas," Nina complained to the Raven as she reviewed her notes on the inner workings of a computer. "But a second opinion would be nice?????????"

The Raven only cared about the shiny bit of metal she'd offered it, but that was okay, Nina had just really needed something to complain at and she wasn't good enough at any of the electronics in the store to feel comfortable complaining at them. Yet. And she hadn't really wanted to whine at Vette about this.

So, Prompto had kind of given Vette some food for thought yesterday over at the bakery, and she'd been turning it over in her head ever since. It was the sort of thing that had seemed a little too good to be true, the idea that just going for it without worrying about what other people thought would ever end in anything but regret. But he'd said it all like he knew what he was talking about, and Vette couldn't deny that the things that held her back now where mostly ghosts of things that hadn't been a part of her life since she was about eight.

She was turning the whole thing over and over in her head while playing the most relaxing video game she could find, today. The sort where she could just tune out and play by reflex, all while sitting and thinking distracted thoughts about a certain big earnest Zora boy, and what he'd make of it if she just walked up to him and announced that she was going to rubber-stamp claim him as her big earnest Zora boy before dragging him down by that cravat and kissing him silly. It didn't hurt that she already knew that kissing was on the table, at least, and--

"Ugh, headcrabs!"

Sorry, train of thought interrupted by shooting enemies in this game. This nice, relaxing game.

The last few weeks had been a ride, that was for sure, and most of it had definitely been squeezed into the last weekend, so Prompto had almost nearly forgotten that it was almost his birthday until he got a card in the mail that day from his parents. It was kind of the usual deal, just a card with a scribbled message saying that they were proud of him, happy birthday, nice and encouraging but dismally impersonal, with a nice check so that he could buy himself something for a gift. At least with him away at school, a gesture like that made sense, so he tried not to think of all the previous birthdays when it was just that they were too busy to do much more.

Should he do something? It would be kind of lame to throw a party for yourself, and at this point, mentioning it to anyone would just seem like he was looking for attention. Which he wouldn't mind, but it would be nice if it didn't feel so obvious. So he guessed he'd just do for his birthday what he mostly always did: buy himself something for a gift, put a little bit of the money toward splurging on a cupcake (it had been a whole cake some years, but he tried not to think about that), and have the same private little birthday celebration with himself that he always had, that was it, no big deal.

It was a pretty good amount of money they sent this year, especially when he transferred it into dollars at the bank. So when he wasn't checking on his little plot of land in his one game, Prompto was spending most of his shift doing some online window shopping, checking the scopes on some new cameras, maybe thinking about getting some new threads, maybe something blue...

...look, when a charming, handsome shark prince who'd been fawning all over you said you'd look good in blue, you wore some goddamn blue, even if that charming, handsome shark prince was gremlin-bit at the time.

Zack's predicament had brought something to mind, so Kaidan had taken himself to the hardware store early Wednesday morning.

The CIC was open, but the owner was busily replacing all of the round door handles with lever handles for every door in the building. The front door already had an automated opener, as did the game rooms, but the Employee Only door and subsequent doors to the apartment upstairs - as well as the back fire door on the ground floor - all needed replaced.

The dogs were helping. Zack was bringing him tools and Girl was occasionally just flopping on Zack to hold him still for a few minutes. Puppy zoomies were still totally a thing.

"Oh, maaaaaan, come on!"

Prompto had thought he'd done so well. He thought he'd planned and set everything up perfectly, so that when he got back from vacation, everything would be fine in his new favorite game, but Prompto had been devastatingly wrong. Any of his crops that hadn't died were clearly eaten by moles, all of his pets had run away, and even his house had burned down and not just a normal fire, but he was pretty sure someone had razed it, which he didn't even think was something that could or should be possible in the game, but, apparently, that was what happened, and so he loaded up his game to a picture of devastation and destruction and heart-ache.

He just didn't have the heart to start the grueling task of building his little adorable paradise back up to the utopia it had been before, not yet, it was still all too fresh, too raw. So he was just going to go back to even more King's Knight with Noct while tinkering a little bit with some controllers.

Vette was... actually doing pretty okay, today. She'd come in to work and immediately started tinkering with a busted tablet that had been sitting in the pile needing repairs. It had taken more time than she'd cared to admit, but even with this world's stupid fondness for devices with very specific parts that you couldn't plunder from elsewhere, she'd managed to bodge together enough bits and pieces from the spare parts pile that the thing actually worked.

... And you could make phone calls from it.

Look, she could just fix the thing, or she could challenge herself while she was at it. And throw some of the little fried metal bits onto the counter for the Raven to play with while she was at it.

After amusing himself a little too much by confusing the raven by offering tiny metal biscuits instead of the usual bits of chainmail, Prompto got to work. Like, actual work work, kind of, in a way. He'd had an idea for a rig on his phone that would allow him to stream King's Knight over the nice big monitors at the shop, he could shoot the shit with Noctis over the headset as they raided together, and maybe he could even start working on some sort of mod that would make it easier to get other people involved, too, because that would be cool as hell.

And, sure, he knew there were plenty of other new games that he had to explore, but sometimes, you just had an itch that you needed to scratch, and nothing beat being able to talk shit to your best friend in a co-op while completely annihilating his score and getting pretty much paid while doing it.

So, there was some kind of... visitor... thing... going on around the island this weekend.

That was... nice? Vette supposed it was probably nice, if you were somebody who could contact any potential visitors in the first place so that they could visit, thanks. It was too much to hope that the gang on Nar Shaddaa would even know to show up, and her own family?

Vette sighed as she settled in behind the counter, the raven hopping over to take up its perch on her shoulder.

Yeah, it hopped up there mostly to admire her headpiece again, but she could at least appreciate the company as she idly poked at some silly 'throw everything into the fireplace' game that started to become really weird as she continued to play. Why were they burning all the things? And why was it strangely hard to stop even while the game was making her feel guilty about it?

"I don't think I like this game," she informed the raven as it nuzzled up against her earpiece. And then she threw a few more toy blocks and a stuffed animal into the fire, too.

Buzzy was flying in lazy circuits around the room, occasionally giving a tiny pirouette in the air for no reason except to do a tiny pirouette in the air.

Kaidan had spent a solid five minutes wondering just what the hell Vette had done to the keyboard. Which now had a scroll wheel embedded in it. His fingers, larger than hers, kept hitting it by accident while he was doing the end of month invoices. Even though it was annoying him at the moment, it was still clever as hell and he was proud of her for it.

Talking to Nina the other day had Prompto feeling like maybe he was slacking off a little around here; he was having a lot of fun, but it couldn't really be all fun and games, right?

Well, technically, the fun and games was totally part of his job, and you couldn't be considered a slacker when you were just doing your job. Not that he needed a whole lot of convincing to accept that logic, anyway, as he swung into the C.I.C. for his shift, tossing the raven another little bit of shiny chainmail to distract him from being a total butt, checked to see if there was anything that needed doing and getting those taken care of before finally settling behind the desk and looking for a good FPS.

The raven had no real opinion. Not that Nina had really expected it to have one, but since the bird was busy peering at her doodles she figured it didn't hurt to ask.

After her conversation with Prompto last night, Nina was hard at work trying to figure out what the three of them could all wear that would be something that all of them would be willing to wear in the name of being a team.

Given their varying senses of fashion, it was harder than it should have been. Nina definitely didn't want to wear black—which Prompto favoured—and so far Vette hadn't offered too many opinions on what her colour preferences even were.

Ugh.

Now, those were words Prompto would have never expected to come out of his mouth ever, and yet there they were. But he had managed to score what was in his estimation the second coolest job anyone could have, so it wasn't that surprising. So he came in, checked to see if there was anything in particular that he needed to do that day, fired everything up, and then plopped down behind the counter to get his game on.

After tossing the raven the little metal chainmail ball he'd gotten from Norman yesterday. There. That ought to keep the beady eyed bugger from staring at him and looking all judgey.

And judgey was probably exactly what he'd be, too, because, after testing out a few games in the hopes to find one that really stuck with him today, the one that really stuck with him and got him way too sucked in was....adorable.

Don't you even dare judge him. By the end of his shift, he was totally going have the prettiest garden and the most stylish blue jeans the town had ever seen, and then go brain a monster with a flower pot!

Prompto could still hardly believe it that this was going to be his job. He was going to get paid to be here and...'familiarize' himself with all the video games and tinker around at the machines, and play games all day...well, not all day, during the slow times, Kaidan had said, but considering the shop hadn't even been open on Tuesdays before, and it was Tuesday, just how busy could it get?

That big, slightly scary bird didn't even try to chase him out of the shop like he was half expecting it to, either! Bonus!

He tried to expend some of the nervous, excited energy he was feeling in taking care of the few things he knew needed to be done first, making sure to cover all those responsibility bases before flailing slightly about where to even start with all these new and shiny games. Clearly, he'd have to just do a sampling today, maybe dip into each one a little to get a vague feel...

....and ended up staying on the first game he chose, which was a racing game, but he didn't actually get to any racing. He'd spent so much time dicking around in with customizing his car that, by the time he'd put the final touches on it, he realized it was already time to close up.

Nina… honestly still couldn't believe that she'd gotten gainfully employed at this shop in particular.

Kaidan was such a pushover. And a total sucker. She'd decided that she'd liked him, though, which meant he was her pushover and sucker to boss about. (That he was, in fact, her boss was a thing that Nina knew, filed away in the back of her mind, and would probably not pay that much attention to.)

Anyway!

Though Kaidan had walked her through everything in the shop, and all her duties to it, it was her first day, so Nina was spending the time re-reading her meticulous notes on everything he'd said, looking cute as anything at the counter (if nothing else, she was good at that), and eyeing the bird.

Who was eyeing her hairclips. Probably because they were shiny.

Well, whatever, she wouldn't do anything unless it made the attempt.

Well... this week had definitely been an interesting one. Not better than last week, but interesting for sure. And now it was seven days since the last time she'd been in to do the apparently-Vette-had-a-job-now thing, so in she came again, giving a nod and a shiny coin from her pocket to the raven before settling in at the counter, herself.

She considered trying to pick apart the last of Kaidan's phones-for-parts and see if she could throw together something fun with them, but... nah. Instead she was just going to settle in behind the counter and try to acquaint herself with more of the games that were installed on the computer there.

It was a bit of a randomized crapshoot, since it was impossible to be sure what any of those games were about just by looking at an icon on the screen, even if she did take the tiem to translate the words in the title. But after a few swings-and-misses, she settled on a cute game about evolving a little single-celled organism up into sentient life. Which was great until she encountered, for the first and likely not the last time, an inability to change something in-game without a scroll wheel.

... But she hated the mouse. If she wanted to play a game using a brick, she'd just round up a posse and go on a window-smashing spree or something.

So, that was Vette's day, then. Scrounging around for enough parts to find some kind of scroll-wheel workaround that didn't involve gaming with a lump in her hand all the time. The raven was even helping. Sort of. It grabbed any shiny bits out of her discard pile and flew off to hide them somewhere in the shop, which was possibly almost the same thing, anyway.

Kaidan opened the shop and let the raven in. "So," he asked it conversationally, "How'd the new girl's first day go?" The raven made a noise that was disturbingly mimic of a human laugh. "Oh no. Is she coming back?" The raven considered the question and then bobbed its head once before proudly strutting back and forth across the counter.

When he went behind the counter, he was amused to note that Vette had taken 'try to fix the phones' to heart. Even most of the ones meant to be parts were in the 'fixed' pile. Good hire.

He put a sign on the box, "If you're new and you don't have a phone yet, ask at the desk." It was set in the window.

When he returned to the counter, he spread out some small shiny treats for the raven.

Honestly, if asked about it, Vette would admit that she was still kind of impressed that she'd managed to make her way in for her first work shift at the right time on the right day. A regular job? With hours and things? Now there was a novel experience, made even more novel by the fact that she hadn't even been here on this weird island for a full week yet.

Her crew had to have noticed she was gone by now, right?

That thought had Vette frowning a little as she stood at the counter, tinkering away with one of the scrap phones that Kaidan kept on hand for parts. She had her comm out, too, and was dissecting both of them to see if she could make some kind of functional hybrid of the two. No particular reason. Honest. Nothing at all like how she was quietly hoping she'd have a better chance of contacting Plasmajack or Fuse if she was bouncing a signal off the local communications networks or anything.

Really.

The C.I.C. was open, and the Twi'lek at the counter was happy to direct you to the games rooms or try to fix your broken stuff. Whenever she wasn't chasing the raven around to try to get her shiny electronic components back.

Wednesday hadn't started out great. Kaidan was still pushing away the agoraphobia by stubbornly refusing to stay in his apartment. After a quick shower, he opened the store and let the raven inside.

"Buzzy, up," he called. The Robonoid whirred to life and spun up out of its little countertop pet bed, beginning a slow circuit of the storefront. It would eventually settle and walk around the counter, or use Kaidan as some sort of bipedal jungle gym. The raven didn't seem to mind the company. The two even played some sort of strange game of 'tag' occasionally.

He dusted off the 'help wanted' sign and put it in the window. There were new students on the island. Maybe he'd find a local this time.

Shop description badly in need of updating is here.

Kaidan had left the shop closed for a few hours in the morning. He'd sent a text to his friends to let them know he wasn't missing, he was going off-island for a bike ride, and the first person to freak out about it would get a smack. There was a combat veteran motorcycle run for charity about an hour outside of Baltimore, so he'd rented a bike and went to hang out around people he could relax around. The weather'd been dicey at first but then it cleared up. The ride was beautiful and it put him in a better frame of mind for the day. For a value of 'better' that meant 'less anxious', not 'less numb'.

The raven was waiting for him. He'd thought to warn it that morning that the shop would be open late and received a churble instead of a quok, which he assumed was acknowledgment. The raven didn't seem peeved when he opened, so. It did take up its regular perch on the counter, strutting back and forth.

Business was steady, so Kaidan didn't get nearly as much time to play with cards. He was curious about the new faces, but simply assumed school had started for the year.

Kaidan opened the shop and let the raven inside. "Hey, buddy. How've you been? I missed you." The raven seemed happy to see him, too. Or maybe it wasn't. The cup of pens by the register was systematically emptied as the bird one by one threw them to the floor in an almost ritualistic manner.

Leaning on the counter, Kaidan pulled out a bastardized deck of cards and began playing his weird form of pazaak solitaire again. The raven helped, for a value of help that meant occasionally stealing a card and gliding across the room with it.

Business was steady. The in-between moments were spent playing with the cards, his face almost entirely blank of emotion.

Nate had received a call from Hernando asking if he'd open the store this week. Kaidan was hurt and couldn't make it in. The raven was waiting, and he was subdued. No quoks, just little churbles and chirps. "I know, buddy. Boss's having a heck of a time lately. In you go." He held the door and followed the bird in.

He took up his station behind the counter and pulled out a book. It was either going to be slow or crazy busy today, depending on how many people knew where the boss was and what condition he was in.

The raven paraded to and fro on the counter, stole a pencil, and then began to play some sort of corvid hockey with it.

Nate opened the store again. He was a little happy about the overtime. Kaidan paid well. He was a little worried about the text he'd received when his boss asked about him covering this week. An entire week? That was longer than Kaidan had ever been away.

The raven was also displeased, gliding in and landing on the countertop and parading back and forth with the most irritated of quoks. "I know," Nate said, digging out some small sparkly candies and dumping them on the glass. The raven ate one and then proceeded to angrily fling the rest around the store with angry little churbling noises.

At least the customers were nice today.

Nate showed up to work dressed in black linen trousers, a smart white shirt with a silver-embroidered waistcoat, and of course a perfectly tied cravat. A small piece of clockwork winked from the top of the tie-tack.

He opened the door to the Aetheric Transmission Center, holding it for the raven, and went inside.

The counter was a length of polished hardwood and beveled glass panels. A large mechanical register sat at one end. Steam, soft beeps, and traces of aetheric vapor emanated from the open doors to the transmission chambers.

Pulling out a rag, he began to polish the glass of the counter, waiting for customers.

Nate took the morning shift at the C.I.C. The raven patrolled the counter, alert for any stray shiny bits of anything.

His first customers of the day were delightful. The second pair to come in, anything but. "Do you have the new Space Battle game?" one demanded. Nate shrugged, "Probably. Kaidan's pretty good about keeping things current." "But does it have the new Excellent Exiles expansion?" the second of the pair asked as if they'd just scored a point. Nate gave him the blandest of bland looks, "Like I said: Probably. Kaidan's pretty good about keeping things current." The pair signed up for the dual room.

Nate gave it about half an hour before he set the router to constantly disconnect and reconnect that room. Petty was not beyond him.

Kaidan came in late in the morning, attempting to peel white glue off his fingers. All of his fingers. How do you even get glue on all of your fingers?

Kaidan was manning the shop, with the persistent help of the raven. The radio broadcast that morning made him smirk a little. Wondertwin powers, activate, form of: confusing names.

He had some form of console gaming system on the counter, mostly taken apart. There was a hum from a small air compressor as he used an empty airbrush gun to blast the dust and grime out of it. It was pretty gross inside. A small paintbrush was also being used to de-gunkify the interior. He muttered as he worked on it.

Nate had gotten a call from Kaidan that morning to open, and since he could use the hours, he'd agreed. The raven was waiting. It made Nate a little nervous. The raven hadn't ever been aggressive, but it seemed prudent to be wary of something with a knifelike beak and talons. It politely hopped up on the counter and started strutting back and forth.

Not too long after opening, a group of kids came in, bitching about the Lucifer May Weep game and how the Danny character had gotten a haircut and this was a betrayal of all of the fans and.. Nate tuned them right out, took their money, and sent them to one of the thankfully soundproofed rooms to get their game on.

Not too long later, he received a text from Kaidan: If a little green kid made of gemstone comes in, triangle-shaped hair, stone in their forehead, give them access to the box of parts under the counter.

Sure, that wasn't weird. Gemstone? Really?

This island, man.

Nate unlocked the front door and let the raven in. It was weird Kaidan wasn't here, but he had said he might not be down right away so Nate turned on the lights and booted the computer on the counter to see if they had any reservations. They had two, but not for an hour or so. He spent some time going through the box of random cables under the counter, folding them and banding them into small bundles instead of the giant tangle they were in.

The raven, for his part, patrolled back and forth on the glass of the counter, watching both the storefront and the 'Employee Only' door with equal attention.

The raven was waiting for him in the morning, which wasn't unusual. The somewhat gawky teen standing next to him, however, was. Kaidan opened the door and greeted them both. "I'm not quite set up yet, but come on in and we can get you logged in."

The teenager pushed his glasses up his nose and mumbled, "Um. I'm here about the sign? I'd like to fill out an application?"

Kaidan blinked for a moment, but nodded, "Sure. Let me print one off for you. Know much about computers?"

The boy gave a sheepish smile, "Yeah. They're kind of my hobby. I'm Nate, by the way." "Good to meet you, Nate," Kaidan replied, printing off the promised application and handing it, and a pen, over.

"What's up with the raven?" Nate asked. Kaidan shrugged, "He helps out if I need a break. There are shiny cake toppings under the counter, if you want to give him treats. Don't give him dimes." The raven quoked a protest. "No," Kaidan said firmly, "The last one got stuck in your crop and I had to help you get it out of there. No more. You have crunchies now. Eat those."

Nate took all this in calmly, and continued filling out his application. Kaidan thought that was a good sign.

The weather was a little muggy out, but the C.I.C. was once again cooled to almost refrigeration. Kaidan hadn't slept well the night before, so for once he beat the raven to the door. Flopping down in his desk chair, he pulled a small children's book covered in post-it notes out from under the register. Some scrap paper and a pencil were added. Kaidan began sluggishly going through the book, forcing himself to read the non-English alphabet exclusively. He was getting better at it, he only missed two words this time.

Then the hard part - writing the alphabet. He did one round of A-B-Cs before trying to put them together in words. Pity the Aurebesh-literate person who actually read the paper.

His first customers came in, and Kaidan managed a weary smile while he set them up in one of the suites. He hoped the day would be slow. The raven showed up, and he let it in. Once on the counter, it kept trying to steal his pencil, so he distracted it with pennies and kept the pencil in his grip, writing more words.

The shop was back to a single raven today. Kaidan breathed a small sigh of relief. The birds hadn't been problematic, but keeping the door open for them had kept the shop a little warm for comfort, even with the AC on. One bird meant he could keep the door closed and have the temperature inside the C.I.C. be something in the range of 'arctic'.

For someone who liked the cold, he sure had a big mug of steaming hot tea in his hand. The raven quoked and tapped the glass of the counter with his beak. "You want some tea?" Kaidan asked, amused. The bird made a derisive noise. Kaidan offered him a tea bag. The raven threw it across the room. He tried offering one of the disposable hot beverage cups, and it appeared that was what the raven wanted. It promptly started tearing it to bits, making a mess but also making adorable chirring noises.

With a shake of his head, Kaidan collected the tea bag and tossed it in the trash.

The C.I.C. - Wednesday

Kaidan stared at the front door of his shop when he came downstairs to open. The raven had brought friends. There was a perfect conspiracy of ravens standing on the sidewalk outside. That.. was new. He opened the door and addressed the one he recognized, "Uh, hi. This isn't going to turn into a Hitchcock thing, is it?" The raven gave a subdued, quiet quok that Kaidan took as 'no'. It disturbed him, the subdued tone, for the raven hadn't been anything but confident since he'd known it. Taking a breath, he held the door open for the conspiracy.

They waddled in and hopped up onto the counter, shuffling themselves into some sort of order but also packed themselves tight, huddling. "What's going on?" Kaidan asked, frown lines forming on his brow. 'His' raven barked a loud noise, others joined in at various points with some strange hissing noises. It sounded like.."You don't like fireworks," Kaidan said, "Ok. I get it. You guys can stay in here, but, uh, we're going to have to work something out for bathroom breaks outside." He thought about the problem, looking around for what was at hand. One of the consoles he'd scavenged for parts ought to do the trick.

Pushing the door open with a foot, he set the console between it and the jam, creating a space big enough - he hoped - for the ravens to come and go through. 'His' raven fluttered down and strutted over, inspecting the opening, then striding outside and back in. He shook himself, feathers fluffing, and made a small chirrup noise before flying back to the desk. Kaidan followed, bemused by the whole thing.

Today was the day - doors opened for the first time. Kaidan did a third walkthrough, making sure the computers booted, the network was up and running, and speedtests had all clocked at a high prime. He harnessed his calm; after all, the worst that would happen would be an incredibly boring day sitting behind a counter.

Kaidan clearly hadn't been in Fandom very long.

Hitting a switch, the Open signed blinked into life, the blue glow of the neon reflecting nicely off the window. Door unlocked, he headed back to the counter - and didn't make it. Almost immediately, there was a raucous noise from the other side of the glass.

A rather large raven sat on the sidewalk, pecking imperiously at the door and cawing indignantly. Something shiny was clutched in one talon. Opening the door with a polite, "Can I help you?", Kaidan was buzzed as the bird launched itself at the counter, perching and cawing most insistently. "O..k.," Kaidan breathed, heading over to see what the problem was. A customer was a customer, even if they happened to be a bird at the moment. Holding out a hand, he asked, "Can I see it?" The raven clutched the shiny tighter, then reluctantly lifted it to drop into Kaidan's palm.

It was a wristwatch. Nothing fancy, just not working. Using microtools, he popped the back off and winced, "Looks like it got wet at some point. Battery's corroded. Let me see what I can do. Did you want to wait, or do you want to come back in about an hour?"

The raven cocked its head to one side, then the other, then just stared at him. Right. "Ok. Taking the old battery out now," Kaidan explained, "Then popping it into the ultrasonic cleaner. Once that's done running, probably in about half an hour, I can see if a new battery gets 'er ticking again, or if the solder corroded."

The raven didn't answer. That would be silly, a talking bird.

Shop is open from 9am-midnight. Shop description.
