Troy hadn't really noticed anything funny going on this weekend, and didn't really have anythign big going on....yet....he'd mostly spent the day yesterday debating whether or not to leave the pillow and blanket fort that was his room down or not. And today was his last day at Groovy Tunes, so he definitely didn't plan on doing any work unless Tisarwat came in.

Which meant, instead, he'd set up a wastepaper basket on the other side of the counter and was narrating a basketball game between himself and...himself....with balled up pieces of paper that he sure hoped weren't important as the ball, flinging shots toward the basket and commentating on his performance.

The fact that there were more balls of paper outside the basket instead of inside of it was clearly because the paper was not good paper.

Troy didn't know if he should consider it sexist or what that it seemed Tisarwat had ordered the sleek new modern fixtures and shelves for the store to be delivered on his day (and one of his last ones, too!), but he couldn't be too mad about it, because he actually did manage to put them together pretty quickly and skillfully, without even really thinking about it.

And then they had a whole bunch of new shelves and fixtures, and a bunch of old shelves and fixtures that should be replaced, and Troy was trying to decide if putting the fixtures together was enough work for him that day and he should just leave the rest for Tisarwat.

And then he realized the potential in getting to reorganize all the CDs, and his eyes lit up, and he was deifnitely going to start by putting all the bands and artists with FOOD NAMES in one spot. Fiona Apple, Cake, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Black Eyed Peas, SPICE Girls!, Smashing Pumpkins! SALT-N-PEPA!

....it was a good thing building the shelves hadn't taken long because this was going to be a whole thing now.

Usually, there wasn't anything much that really happened at Groovy Tunes that made Troy feel like he was out of his element too much or didn't know what to do, unless you counted anything to deal with the Headphones Monster, but this most recent shipment sort of had him at a loss.

It was clear to him, after all, that Tisarwat started to rearrange a few things, so getting a shipment of chairs wasn't that out of line. They were colorful and sleek and seemed to go well with a more modern touch that she seemed to want to bring to the place, and he set them all out in a row because he had no idea where she might want them to be put or anything and didn't know if he should just leave them there for her to deal with, or take some sort of initiative and see if he could figure out where to put them himself.

Of course, once the final chair was set down and Troy stepped back to admire his hard work in setting chairs in a straight line, they started...to play music? Like, in turn, they'd light up with a tone to play a little electronic ditty not too dissimilar to the patterns on a game of Simon.

He blinked.

"Ohhhhh," he realized, "right. Musical chairs. I get it."

Now he just needed to figure out if he was mad about it.

Troy probably shouldn't have been nervous about opening up a letter from a school whose motto was 'You're Already Accepted!', but, you know what? That almost made it even more nerve-wracking. After all, since he botched his football career on purpose, he had to depend on his brain for his next step, and anyone who'd spent five minutes talking to him would know that that lead to some tumultuous ground. So if he managed to get rejected from Greendale...well....

There'd be no way he'd manage to get City College instead. Not that he'd want to, he actually was leaning more toward Greendale if only because he liked the way that guy gave a thumbs-up to the camera in that one ad.

So he was putting it off, but finally, in the more dull hours of his work day, he finally caved in, opened it up, and had a look to see what the final verdict was.

"Yes!" he said, with a small pump of his fist. "I'm gonna be the first one in my family to graduate from community college!"

Everyone else graduated from regular college!

In response to how uncomfortable this week had been, the theme of this year's prom was a Winter Wonderland. The Community Center was decked out with shiny fake snowflakes, plastic fuzzy snow creatures, and plenty of glitter snow. Cold decorations might not actually chill out anyone's hormones, but it was worth a shot.

The food and punch were as normal as anything could be with all the pollen still floating around, and hopefully everyone would be on their best behavior. If not, you might have some children to explain your actions to in the morning.

A certain musically-based off-shoot game based on a popular word-based game had lead to a very heated discussion between Troy and teh Annoying Vinyl Hipster, who had given him crap for guessing this one song by today's artist instead of this other song by the same artist, because Troy was pretty sure they were the exact same begininng, which the AVH thought was ridiculous, they sounded absolutely nothing alike.

Which meant non-stop playing the beginnings of both songs over and over again to compare, with the threat of this turning violent (or at least involving turning over a table of demo tapes) by the end of the day.

Troy really shouldn't have been surprised, once he realized what the day actually was, that the stereo at the store was very insistent on only playing Dropkick Murphys, Celtic Woman, U2, and the Corrs today, and yet....

...he did kind of wish the mystery of who kept pinching him was just as easily solved as the reason for the musical selection today, though, especially when it kept happening, even after insisting that his underwear was green, he swore! And he wasn't going to be afraid to prove it!

Well, actually, he kind of hoped that he didn't get called on that bluff, because he knew they were red.

But maybe if he pretended to be colorblind?

It might be worth a shot.

"What?" asked Troy, who was getting really sick and tired of the Annoying Vinyl Hipster giving him a look all day ever since he got in there. "Don't give me that look. I have definitely been here every week, I don't even know what you're talking about."

The AVH now just looked skeptical.

And Troy just scoffed. "Yeah, right," he said, "like you really do all that much around here, yourself."

Just for that, Troy was going to crank up some of the rap and hip-hop that AVH insisted barely even counted as 'real music' and go back to considering a few brochures for colleges back home because he should really get on that.

Although, honestly? He kind of just 'wanted to go Greendale,' if only because he liked the way that guy did the thumbs up in promo video that he was definitely watching a few times on his phone with sensible chuckles and wondering if he still needed to apply via fax.

Troy was a little bit distracted behind the counter at Groovy Tunes that day, which was fine, it wasn't like they were ever that busy, but he was definitely trying to put together a good solid To-Do list for the school trip next week.

So far, the only thing on it (and the only thing likely to be on it) was Recreate that cliff scene from meta for'The Lion King' (only with me as the baby lion, obviously)

But even though he wrote it down and it was definitely something that would be amazing to do, he couldn't help frowning at it and feeling like doing so would just be an obvious soulless money grab that would just make everyone feel weirdly uncomfortable and marvel at the superiority of the original...

Huh.

The stereo was definitely pumping out some seriously up-beat and bouncy tunes that day, which was fine, Troy supposed it couldn't be helped, that stereo deifnitely had a mind of its own and he could survive dealing with it just fine, he definitely was not belting out that Aly & AJ song whenever it showed up in the loop complete with some sweet moves as he went about his work around the store.

Definitely not.

How dare you.

Except that he totally was, but he was making sure to keep an eye on the door so that he could stop and pretend like it never happened when anyone came into the store that day, but it didn't take long before he was singing it under his breath and bopping his head along to it all over again.

No matter what wound up playing on the stereo at Groovy Tunes that day, there was only one song that was playing in Troy's head that day, and it was playing on repeat, and he didn't even know when he'd last even heard this song, but there it was, and it didn't seem to be going away, and it was usually fine. He actually didn't notice it most of the time as he went about whatever needed to be done that day, but then he'd start bobbing his head and singing along to it and realizing he was singing that song again, and where did it come from? Why that song? Why wouldn't it go away? He even tried turning up the volume on the stereo, but then, when he least expected it...

"But you put on quite a show
Really had me goin'...
"

"....Ahhhh! Damn you! Damn you, Rihanna! Why? Why do you torture me so?"

And, yes, that was, at one point, actually shouted at the cover of one of her CDs, because at this point, it had to be some kind of curse or something, and if he didn't figure out how to break it soon...

Madness. He was going to decend into madness.

On the one hand, Troy knew he often had a weird knack for being able to fix things without even really trying that hard, but, on the other hand, it appeared as though fixin the stereo would involve messing with wires, and there was that whole thing? With this place and wire monsters and them potentially trying to eat him one day?

So Troy was mostly trying to convince himself that the lack of music in the store right now was actually very chill and okay and not weird at all, while contemplating just emailing Summer about just buying a new sound system for the place. If he sent that email, though, he would officially be recognizing her as the Temporary Boss of this place, though, and that was also a battle he was not quite ready to hand over.

It was tough, being the fake pretend owner of a music store sometimes!

Just when he thought things were finally safe, Troy (who showed up to work that day, inexplicably, in a suit and tie like he was going to a job interview or something...maybe he'd thought if he was going to act like the boss around here in Tisarwat's absense, he should look the part? But the thing was, he didn't really remember putting the suit and tie on....but, honestly, he did leave his room in clothes he didn't remember putting on quite a lot, it wasn't actually all that weird for him) was pretty sure he heard it.

It would have been easy to miss, with the music thumping over the stereo, but, in a brief pause between pauses, he heard it.

Slithering.

Of wires!

Eyes going a bit wide, stiffening slightly with fear, Troy killed the music and looked around, listening, waiting to hear the sound again.

It didn't come. It knew he was listening now. But he was now on high alert, and listening very, very carefully...slowly backing up toward where the guitars were in case he needed to grab one as a weapon.

There were some new vinyl and CDs and even a box of cassettes that seemed to have been shipped straight from the 1980s to be processed and put away, which worked fine for Troy, because the stereo was pumping out some beats that he was just sort of vibing to to the point where he just started spitting lyrics to go along with it.

He didn't even really know where the words were coming from, but he definitely getting into it and he'd be murmuring along with them throughout the day and wishing he could actually remember them later, but sometimes, gold was emphemeral, and you couldn't keep lightning in a bottle.

This was Troy's first day back at work in a while, and definitely his first day back since Rosa started with all her painting around the store, and so you can bet that most of his shift was just sort of boggling at the work she'd been doing and really hoping that when Tisarwat got back, she wasn't going to mind, because if she did...

Hoo boy. That was going to be kind of awkward!

But it had been a while since Tisarwat left, so, hey, maybe she might not even come back, and if she didn't even come back...maybe that did mean that Troy could take over the place and he wouldn't even have to worry about it!

(Yes, he was actively choosing to ignore the fact that, technically speaking, if Tisarwat never came back, then Summer would still be in charge, but, dammit! He still had seniority!)

So then the rest of Troy's shift was mostly trying to decide what his first actions once he was in charge of the place might actually be, and he wasn't really sure yet, but he felt pretty confident that it was going to involve puppies, pizza, or possibly both.

Of course Laszlo vaguely recognized the song that had been playing everywhere, but of course, he also recognized it as his own turn-of-the-century creation, 'Song of the Bosom,' which was mostly an ode to various breasts and had zero things to do with Christmas.

But that was what he was singing to himself as he set out his sign tonight. "Hark, see the breasts, sweet, swollen breasts," and so on. You should all be glad that some people -- unlike Laszlo -- are simply too uncreative to write songs on the fly and thus there would be no additional lyrics featured in this narrative.

Troy definitely didn't know enough about Christmas music to realize quite yet that the version of 'Carol of the Bells' that was playing on repeat over the store's sound system was not quite the same version as everywhere else.

All he knew was that it was definitely annoying after about the third time and he was pretty sure today was going to actually be the best day to personally test out how efficient some of those noise-cancelling headphones actually were.

He was just going to be particularly careful to not get the wires tangled up.

So, Troy's boss was apparently out for an unknown amount of time, but, instead of putting him in charge...he, who had worked for her for...a while now! And therefor should have....some sort of seniority!....Tisarwat got Summer to do it. Summer, who didn't even work here! And, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, so maybe Summer did work a million jobs and apparently had 'tempoarary manager' on her resume for, like, probably a dozen different places, but still! The whole thing was totally bogus.

Until someone came in complaining about a purchase and demanding some sort of refund and compensation for emotional distress, in which case, Troy was very suddenly fine with not having been given the responsibility and was more than happy to direct the irate consumer to the lady in charge while he went back to just listening to music and flipping through some music magazines.

Well, it was the most wonderful time of the year again! If by wonderful, you actually meant horrible and somewhat terrifying and make Troy actually glad he grew up in a weird religious cult that didn't celebrate Christmas because surprise! It was actually the worst!

Although, he had to admit, while last year had left his fairly traumatized about the whole thing, so far it...wasn't too bad? Like, there were polar bears handing him soda, and he did like soda, and it almost felt like kind of a peace offering? To make up for last year? But he was also a little reluctant to trust it. Oh, he'd still take the soda and drink the crap out of those sodas, Coke was delicious, especially in those old-timey glass bottles and stuff, but he wasn't about to let his guard down yet, that was for sure!

But so far, it had just been those dolls yesterday and the polar bears today, and that wasn't a bad start, even though the song the doll had been singing was definitely stuck in his head, so, as he was unloading new merch into the racks and shelves, he was singing it under his breath a little and giving it a more modern spin.

Did he have any idea what the words actually meant? Of course not.

But if anyone did speak Romanian, they would likely be pretty shocked by what was coming out of this poor, clueless kid's mouth right now.

Usually, when a shipment of stock came in, there wasn't much of a problem. Troy went ahead and signed for them, they left the boxes, and then he had the task of actually putting them away, either on the floor or in the back room, no big deal, right?

But every once in a while, something like this showed up, and he wasn't really sure what he should do because it was obviously a mistake.

Unless Tisarwat meant to order a bunch of rainbow-colored toy xylophones pretty much for babies.

Wait. Had she meant to have them in last week in time for everyone turning into kids, and they were just late?

But how would she know that was going to happen?

Was his boss psychic?

(DON'T tell him it wasn't entirely possible around here!)

Either way, he was now convinced that it wasn't a mistake and that it had been intentional, even if the jury was still out on whether or not it had anything to do with last weekend. So now he was making a nice toy xylophone section near the regular ones, and maybe he brought one back over to the counter to sort of dabble at here and there between customers, but, you know, as a joke.

Feeling oddly inspired by the musician he'd discovered last week, Troy thought maybe he could try his own hand at making some of his own music and sick beats, which meant that he'd dragged one of the keyboards to the counter with him, where he was experimenting with some sounds and scribbling down some potential lyrics in between dealing with whatever customers managed to wander in that day.

This was all pretty new to him, and most of what he was working on seemed to be poor attempts to disguise lyrics about particular girls that he knew and liked and also a much deeper piece about the somewhat emphemeral current existence of the tangled headphones wire monster ('Could it have been/you were a part of us this whole time/and all it took was a single line/to unravel the real you?'), but he felt they weren't actually that bad, and he wondered what it might take to convince Astrid to let him debut some of it on their radio broadcast tomorrow. Or at least next week, at the latest, so he could maybe polish it up a little before hand, or something...

But you know that, before too long, any attempts at legitimate song writing had devolved into just stringing together silly sound effects again, because who could possibly resist that?

It was November now, which meant that the scary stuff from Halloween should be over, and he didn't quite need to start freaking out about Christmas being terrible yet, so Troy was hoping to have a nice chill day at the store, listening to music and maybe poking around at a keyboard or something (OOOOH, or a keytar!), but noooo. Instead, he had to come in for his shift that day to find a Post-It note from Tisarwat on the register that informed him that the tangled headphone wire moster was aparently missing? And if he saw it, please just untangle it once and for all or something???

As if that was even how it worked?? It was a monster, you couldn't just untangle it!

But after having spent a weekend (okay, well, a Sunday, but still!) as that tangled ball of headphone wires....and now discovering it was missing?? Did that mean...was the tangled ball of headphone wires now somehow a part of him? Like, it was now inside of him somehow instead??

It was all...way, way too many wrinkles for his brain right now, so he was going to ball that Post-It note up and make a free-throw shot into the wastebasket with it as if that would help him pretend he'd never even saw it, and everything was fine, and he was just going to jam out to this sweet new artist that he was really into for some reason and it was honestly a surprise he hadn't heard of this dude before.

Considering the theme of the dance, it might have been a surprise to walk into the community center and find it looking relatively classy, but a ball was a ball, even if it was a ball for "monsters." There were candleabras and dark gauzey fabrics everywhere, trying to put off an "elegant evening in a castle" vibe. Even the glitter was understated!

There were extra masquerade masks in case anyone needed one, or wanted to switch things up during the night, and bags of candy for anyone who wanted to stop by, even if it was just to sneak a peek. Or get candy in general, there's no judgement here.

Troy had to admit, one of the absolute worst parts of this job had to be...no, not the Annoying Vinyl Hipster...that dude was pretty bad, but dealing with him was just annoying. It didn't carry with it the complete and total existential dread and fear of the unknown (how would that be for a topic in his literature class?) that the Tangled Headphones Monster Probably Lurking in the Basement had. It was a fear he felt all too much whenver he thought he heard a weird sound or a bump or a groaning from the air ducts. Sometimes there was a rattling. Sometimes a slithering, like a snake, and he honestly wasn't sure if it was actually the potential monster in the basement, or just the stereo still on its spooky music bullshit some more.

But...but...!

He did have to admit that, today? This unknown fear was actually a little inspiring. He was really wracking his brain trying to think of what he was going to do for the homecoming dance, and, while Sexy Dracula was always ready in his pocket, he'd done that before, and he wanted to at least try to mix it up a little.

...perhaps he could consider Sexy Tangle Headphones Monster Probably urking in the Basement, actually. It was unique, to be sure, and he could even pull it off shirtless very easy, and all he'd have to do was tangle up some headphones, and he was all set!

...okay. Okay. This was fine. He could definitely let it stick around at least until the beat dropped, and, by then, he was actually kind of invested in it, and it could stay.

So long as it didn't mean there was going to actually be any spooky scary skeletons marching in through the store and, like, trying to play xylophone on their ribs or something. Troy could not handle that today...or any day, for that matter.

The stereo was definitely doing that thing it did, where it seemed like it was capable of only playing what it wanted, and what it wanted was to just keep a bunch of songs clearly by the same band on repeat, which, you know, Troy was fine with, even if the music was clearly old. But it wasn't bad, it had a good groove to it that he could appreciate and a few moments that made him wish he cared enough to learn how to sample and mix music some day.

But there was definitely something about the band. Like, he had a feeling that the stereo had chosen to play them specifically for some reason? But he just couldn't, for the life of him, pinpoint exactly why, and it was driving him mildly crazy.

Whether or not him actually learning the actual name of the band would help in this was anyone's guess.

Eventually Edge found himself on the boardwalk so he stopped for a bit to enjoy the view as the sky slowly lit up more as the sun rose higher on the other side of the island. Though he would be hard pressed to admit it out loud to anyone, he was kind of enjoying the small break from the madness and insanity. He couldn't remember the last time he had been ale to get a spontaneous break. It was a nice fall Friday afternoon, and the park was all ready for people to gather to meet their loved ones, as even the extremely glittery banner hanging over the entrance to the park evidenced:

Welcome to Parents' Weekend 2021!

There was a lot of glitter. Not just on the banner, but... generally everywhere. Sorry, the school administration had ordered a surplus of it, and it clearly all needed to go somewhere, and since it was all in very autumnal shades of orange and red and gold, well, this was just the occasion.

Welcome, family and friends and whoever else the townspeople and/or the school happened to invite! Try not to inhale too much glitter.

Troy was having a really good week, to the point where he almost thought about actually doing some of the reading for his literature class on his shift that Thursday, but the stereo seemed to be on a really big saxophone jazz kick that day, which was...not very good music to try and read through. So he wound up just mostly doing organizational tasks while drumming beats on everything (and when he was pretty sure no one was around, dancing, because how could he not?), and that suited him just fine, too.

Troy was actually pretty excited to get into work that day, because he had something planned that he spent most of his last shift setting up so that today he could finally get to work on doing it. So he came in for his shift, threw his backpack behind the counter, and went straight to the keyboards, bopping his head along to the songs already playing in his head. He grabbed a few of them under his arms and brought them back over to the counter, where he was going to set them all up in an arrangement so that he could do what he was hoping to do, cracked his knuckles, rolled his neck a little, and then got ready for epic brilliance.

He dramatically pressed down the first key, only instead of the fart noise he was expecting, he got...just a regular old keyboard note.

Wait a second.

He pressed another one. No lasers. Just keyboard. Another. So much for shattering glass, it was just more keyboards. Another. Still the same.

"Who changed these all back?" he demanded to the emptiness around him.

He had spent hours perfectly programming these keyboards for sound effects, and now they were all back to normal, and who wanted to just play a normal song when you could attempt to play Tchaikovsky with nothing but splat sounds and farm animals?

He was going to play it for radio tomorrow, too!

But it looks like he was back to square one.

He definitely made sure the first sound he reprogrammed in was a sad trombone, because it just really spoke to his soul right now.

Troy had really hoped that Tisarwat would have changed her mind about the Christmas decorations this week, but he was dismayed (and mildly terrified) to find that this was not the case.

And he'd take them down himself if it weren't for the fact that....well....being viciously attacked by string lights was not something you wanted to have happen twice in your lifetime. Sure, they seemed harmless enough now but he wasn't taking any chances.

In fact, he was considering the defensive possibilities of wielding a violin bow for protection. At least he was until he remembered about microphone stands.

The park around the pond had been strung up with lights. There was a dance floor with a live zombie band, tables of food, and a spot with a sensible Honda Accord decked out with one of those giant bows you see on car ads around the holidays.

The party was pretty great all on its own, but if you happened to be under the delusion that it was Your Super Sweet 16, well, there was everything available for you to see something slightly different.

And a pond to get into a slap fight about whose party was better.

Just sayin'.

Everyone's welcome!

Was there anything worse than your boss unexpectedly dropping in on your shift so that you had to make it seem like you actually worked while you were at work and not just hang around listening to music or goofing with instruments?

Yes. There absolutely was, and that was your boss unexpectedly dropping in on your shift so that she could apparently start decorating for Christmas, which you very firmly did not like, in September, because she apparently thought it was December.

Forget all the trauma that Troy had wrapped up in Christmas decorations because he had been violently attacked by them to the level of clinic visits last year, but then Tisarwat had to go and insist they start playing Christmas music, too, which meant probably having to hear that Mariah Carey song about five million times before the end of the day.

This was so dire that Troy wasn't even going to pretend to be cool about it, looking at Tisarwat with the most soulfully desperate eyes he could muster.

"Tisarwat," he said. "Please. Just...no. You can't...you can't do this to me. We still have several more months!"

Tisarwat just gave Troy one of those consoling sort of looks that grown-ups gave kids when they weren't going to listen to a word they said, which was weird, because she wasn't that much older than Troy, and said, "I think you just need to get into the December spirit, Troy."

"Why would I ever want to do that?" he called out after her, as she walked away, dismissing his appeals entirely to go put more tinsel up, leaving Troy to just look miserably at the stereo currently belting out about rocking around the Christmas Tree.

Troy was feeling a little disconnected and concerned.

No, not because of any weird dreams or compulsions to go look for something that he wasn't sure what it was, although that definitely did seem to vaguely be there. He was disconnected and concerned because there was a new guitar that came in, and that wasn't anything unusual, but then there was the guitar itself..

...which just...didn't seem right at all.

At first, he thought it was several guitars, but then he realized that all the guitars were actually the same guitar, and that was really wrinkling his brain, and then he tried to think about who would even play a guitar like that, and that they'd have to probably have more than just two hands, and then that was wrinkling his brain even more, and now he had to go and check the special orders because he wasn't sure if he wanted to be there when whoever had enough hands to play that guitar came in to pick it up.

But also, he definitely did want to be here for that.

Troy was kind of hoping that whatever had gotten into the record players last week, demonic or otherwise, had sort of worked itself out, but when he eventually, tentatively, brought himself to test it out, the results were....not encouraging! In fact, they sounded much, much, much worse!

It turned out that Troy really had no clue how to use a record player and had somehow managed to simply get them all stuck on playing things backwards without realizing it, but, for now, he wasn't going to get even remotely close enough to them to realize this, and was, instead, going to be staying firmly at the counter, googling where to purchase holy water online.

Probably Etsy?

The Annoying Vinyl Hipster was being...well...an annoying vinyl hipster that Tuesday, complaining to Troy that there seemed to be something wrong with all of the record players. And even though Troy didn't really know much about record players, he did have an uncanny ability for fixing things, so he agreed to come over and at least have a look.

But he wasn't hearing anything wrong. Maybe he was definitely not vinyl hipstery enough, but when AVH played the record for him and then looked at Troy expectently, he didn't know what the problem was.

"So what?" he asked. "It sounds fine. Dolly Parton, right?"

That was when AVH shook his head gravely and took a moment to show Troy what album it was.

And Troy? Was stunned.

"What?" he balked, taking the record from him a moment to inspect before shoving it back into his hands. "Play it again."

And, yup, there was no denying it, that was definitely a Hozier song.

Troy's eyes went wide. "Hold on."

He went to grab a Dolly Parton record; they put it on another player, and the results were...

Well, they were a little disturbing, to be honest.

"That's wrinkling my brain," said Troy, stunned, staring at the record players like they were possessed.

If any of the guys on the island thought they might get away with not being forcibly invited to an all night slumber party- which they shouldn't, since they would not have been expecting it- better luck next time.

It was the exact same setup as the other warehouse, with a couple changes. Because really, why should guys have to go without the typical slumber party experience?

You know...for having been transported down into a deep, deep dark cave thanks to falling through a giant hole, Groovy Tunes, by Troy's estimation...didn't actually look that bad? But, of course, there was a pretty good chance that his boss would see things a little differently, so he tried to get in as soon as he could (tried being the opporative word!) so that he could do what he could to make sure that everything was as best restored to post-hole condition as possible, especially now that he knew Tisarwat was back and it would only be a matter of time before she checked in on him and the store.

(Little did he know that she already had and clearly decided that there was no way she was dealing with a holed store and her major space lag at the same time).

As far as all the things like electric and HV/AC and plumbing components of the store, Troy managed to deal with all of that stuff with surprising ease. He didn't even really know what he was doing, it just sort of came naturally to know how to repair and rehook everything back up to its previous status and honestly? He felt that was pretty good! If you didn't know any better, you'd have never thought the place had gone in a hole at all!

Well, as long as you ignored the collection of broken weapons and snapped CDs. There were some things even the future Truest Repairman couldn't really help. But you can bet that all the shelving in the place looked great by the time Troy was finished with them!

Stark had spent a long time on the beach yesterday, enjoying sunshine and fresh air and views that didn't end with cave walls, but had eventually gone inside for the night. But he hadn't slept well (maybe 2.5 weeks underground had that effect, or maybe it was his insistence on keeping the lights on, or maybe it was a combination of the two things and others) and had given up on more sleep fairly early this morning.

He could have stayed inside (maybe taken the time to shave his head and face which were both on the fuzzier side of things after all that time in the hole) but he was still feeling restless. That wasn't likely to end all that soon. Instead he'd gotten up and headed to the Perk. The coffee wasn't really a substitute for sleep but it was better than nothing.

Now he was seated on a bench in the park, sipping his coffee, and occasionally glancing around as if to reassure himself that everything was where it was meant to be. And if he was keeping a close eye on the ground, just in case, who could blame him?

To be honest, Troy was feeling pretty bummed that Tuesday, and was discovering that no amount supposedly groovy tunes could fix it. He still wasn't sure where he landed on being either disappointed or excited that his sheep farming class was actually about sheep farming, there was this whole thing with holes going on right now, and he was pretty used to Alexis being flaky and not being around a lot because that was just what she did, but usually Astrid was better about responding to his texts, even if they were usually pretty brief and to the point, and this was definitely one of those days where he really missed Eleanor, and maybe he should get something with shrimp for lunch, to sort of honor her memory.

(Or out of a weird feeling that maybe, if he had shrimp, it would, like, summon her, and then, voila! No more bummed out mood!)

But he just sort of ordered pizza instead, because pizza was always good, but he regretted this choice almost instantly (almost instantly; there was definitely a moment where Troy was all "Oh, cool! Pizza delivery by hole!" before it struck him that "Oh, no! Pizza delivery by hole!!!"). Because, yeah, that was definitely a hole, and no amount of hopping over the counter and rushing toward the door was going to help him when that hole was getting big enough to suck in the whole store!

He knew he should have gotten shrimp!

With his boss gone for a little while, Troy figured it was a good time to just sort of slack off at work and listen to music, but he mostly just wound up generally distracted sort of...thinking about things.

Things like...maybe pizza for lunch. Pizza was pretty good. In fact, most round-shaped foods were good. He honestly couldn't think of a round-shaped food he didn't like. Pizza, hamburger, cookies, donuts. Didn't he see something recently about donuts? Maybe he should get some donuts. If you thought about it, CDs were kind of like donuts of the music world, only instead of eating them with your mouth-holes, you consumed them with your ear-holes, but unlike donuts, you could keep 'eating' them, the only digesting going on there was with your brain into ideas, unless there was something wrong with your CD player...

...needless to say, clearly, there was a lot of work being done at Groovy Tunes this week. Definitely...

When Troy got in to work that morning, he found waiting for him a To-Do list of a whole bunch of extra cleaning that sounded pretty superfluous and kind of like it might be punishment for not doing all the things he was supposed to do at work last week.

Which almost made him wonder if he should not do the To-Do list this week and see what would happen, but...

Considering the list with narrowed, speculative eyes, he was pretty sure that there was a good chance the next list could be a lot worse, and if he didn't do those, the next list could very well be a How TO Find a New Job checklist.

So he sighed, felt glad he didn't wear his good clothes into work today, put on some some tunes (dare he say...even groovy ones?) and got to work.

Figuring he didn't have much work to do that day, especially now that they had the annoying hipster to foist a lot of stuff onto (that was the whole reason Tisarwat hired him, right, was so that they didn't have to do as much work? Sure, she never explicitly said as much, but that just made sense, didn't it?), Troy decided he was going to finally get around to playing around with some of the remixing and DJ equipment that had that was mostly collecting dust anyway.

Did he have any idea what he was doing with any of it?

Nope!

Did he even bother looking at the instruction manuals or for help online?

Yes, and then promptly decided it would be nice if they wrote it in English (they did) and went back to just having a more...intuitive learning experience.

Was there actually a lot of things that needed to be done around the store, like a few shipments piling up at the back door, a few broken instruments that needed to be shipped off to various repair shops, and a few special orders that needed to be fulfilled?

Yup! But you aren't ignoring them if you just didn't bother checking to see that they were there, right?

Troy was thinking a lot about his paintball class again, and how he couldn't seem to break the barrier of actually doing well in it, and it was kind of getting under his skin and in his head a little bit, because he felt he should be doing better, so, today, he was mostly asking anyone who came into the store for advice on how to get good.

Which meant that he wasn't getting a whole lot of advice, because not a lot of people came in, but there was at least "IDK JUST SHOOT PEOPLE?' written in his little notebook in very large letters, which he had, throughout the day, considered with a thoughtful, revelatory nod, underlined a few times, and circled it as well so he just didn't forget, because, yeah, that was pretty solid advice, he was definitely going to try that in class this week.

It was a good thing there wasn't a whole lot of work to do at the store that day, because Troy was spending most of it on the computer at the register, doing some Very Important Research.

This research included the terms 'paintball' 'cannon', 'can you make a paintball cannon', and 'where to find a cannon.'

The more he researched, the less his moment of inspiration in yesterday's pirate class to potentially carry over into paintball class later this week seemed feasible, but, dammit! He was not about to give up yet, he was convinced that this idea was far too brilliant to just let Google deter him so quickly.

Maybe if he made his own cannon? Would a cannon be difficult to steal and/or borrow??

He was sure he'd figure something out by the end of the day...

The stereo, apparently, decided to take the day off and not work when Troy came in that day, but that was fine. Because he couldn't help singing a certain song, under his breath but also sometimes when he was pretty sure he was by himself, with passion and verve, while he set to the task of attempting to fix it.

What?

It was, like, a super catchy song.

It was probably going to be stuck in his head all week; he might as well enjoy it.

Unless anyone actually came in. And then he might claim he'd never heard that song before in his life and clearly they were just hearing things.

There were definitely some days when Troy thought it was pretty cool that his job was basically just doing nothing all day except for listen to music and sometimes roll his eyes at that one hipster guy who always came in for vinyl records, but there were also other days where he actually kind of wanted to do something? But not, like, you know, actual somethings, he would leave all that stuff to his boss, but more like a setting up a Jenga tower of cassette tapes and playing against himself and seeing how long he could go before the whole thing toppled over kind of something.

By the end of the day, he was going to get really good at this sort of thing!
