Kaidan took himself off for a run along the beach Sunday morning. The weather had finally broken so it was cool enough in the earlier hours that it didn't feel like running through warm soup. His brain was doing its hamster wheel thing, so he let his body do its thing and find an easy loping pace.

There were little.. bird.. things.. on the ground. That was a hazard he hadn't previously encountered on the beach, so his jog wound up something more akin to free-running when he dodged or jumped them. After a few minutes, Kaidan just gave into it and started actually free-running, launching himself up and over larger rocks in various flavors of flips and leaps. He'd never have the kind of fluid grace Kanan would bring to something like this, since he cheated and used the Force for it, but he did it with the ease of long practice. It had become part of his training routine a long time ago. He just didn't normally do it on the beach.

A day for different things.

Sparkle was fine. Sparkle was perfectly fine. He was that sort of fine with, like edges, though. The kind of fine where his lawyer had sent him some papers to look over, and his eyes kept skimming over words and then having to go back again to try to remember what those words even meant. Big, complicated words like 'case' and 'the.'

He could just sign these and send them back. That was all his lawyer wanted him to do with them, after all. Put his signature on them so that they could start really pushing into the next steps, here. Just go, 'okay' and kick everything into motion.

But how could he do that if he couldn't even read 'the?'

The clothing shop was open, and Sparkle was behind the counter, willing to leap at any chance for a distraction. Desperately.

Duke had dealt with a lot strange or threatening weather in his time. Giant hailstones, volcanic ash, even the occasional odd rain of aquatic animals thanks to water spouts.

Jello was a new one for him.

By the time he finished securing the Cape Rouge against the . . . precipitation . . . he was soaked, sticky, and smelling like fruit punch, and unwilling to track the sugary crap back into his nice clean rooms below decks. He found the options on the boardwalk rather underwhelming (who went for lobster in Maryland?), and most of the storefronts were crowded with soaked, sticky, fruit-punch-smelling porgs (okay, fine, there were like three, still). So he headed into town instead, hunched into a rain slicker, and trying to keep from slipping in the puddles of wobbly fruit gel.

He shook himself off as best he could before heading into the Perk and attempted to shove his sticky hair out of his face.

"A cup of the strongest, most bitter crap you have, please," he requested. Ugh, he was pretty sure he had jello in his sinuses. "And a roll of paper towels would be great."

He grabbed a table by the window once he had his order, and looked gloomily out. Hopefully the rain couldn't keep up too long?

"This cannot be good for the environment."

There was a piano. Jack was giving it a whole bunch of sour looks as she came in and caught the keys. "Is Northman having some sort of fucking emotional crisis, Tiny?" Tiny went a bit pokerfaced and shrugged. He wasn't dumb enough to answer that - ever. "I mean, for fucksake, have we scared off that many DJ's that we have to get someone in here to pick out 'Chopsticks' for the crowd? People come here to drink and shake their shit and find someone to hook up with, if he turns it into some slow piano jazz bar with a bunch of Barry Manilow bullshit, I'm out."

Tiny gave her an incredibly pointed look. "It's easier to yell at DJ's, asshole!" she answered, "I'm not personally insulting their fuckin' life skills when I tell them they suck!" .... You kind of were, Jack.

She went in to do inventory, shoved it in the till with 'What the fuck? Piano?' on it and then.. went over to the piano and began absently playing a piece of music. Tiny's jaw dropped. "What?" Jack demanded, "I stole a piano once!"

She'd done no such thing. Liara had taught her. Jack could also play 'Chopsticks' but .. she liked this better.

And now she missed Liara. Great.

Jack was silent, lost in thought when she headed in to work. Tiny threw her the keys and she caught them just out of habit. Took inventory without much thinking about it and put the slip in the till. Idly noted that they'd been going through some of the better quality booze lately.

Tiny gave her a wary glance when she showed up to lean against the bar and a more pointed one in response to her cranky, "What?" Glowering, Jack shrugged at him, "Nothing's wrong, I'm just thinking." Another. Pointed. Glance. "Fuck off. I'mma go throw axes for awhile."

It gave her something to do and an excuse not to engage with Tiny. It also distracted her enough that she didn't notice the DJ had gone with a 90's boy band theme.

Probably good for them that she didn't notice.

Kaidan had spent so much time on a ship that he had acquired the sort of paleness under his inborn tan that had Jack making jokes about nerds and basements. There was only so much realness he could take before he'd decided to head down to the beach for a day outside. A large microfiber blanket was held down with rocks, a cooler with various non-alcoholic beverages, and some snacks, sat nearby.

The first thing he did was go for a swim. The ocean was bracing but as long as he stayed near the shallows, it wasn't so bad. Every so often a wave would come in from further out in the depths to remind him of that, slapping across his body with a shock of breath-stealing cold. Kaidan was Canadian, he'd spent his formative years in Vancouver, and more importantly, Kaidan was stubborn. He swam until his muscles burned with it. Then went to flop on the blanket in the mottled sunlight, sunglasses over his eyes and the towel he'd wiped off the wet with folded under his head as a pillow. When he overheated or overcooked, he'd go swim again and then switch sides.

Laying back, listening to the water hit the rocks. Listening to the birds and other animals, the occasional snatch of conversation from people further inland. Planet noises, nothing like the whine and ping of metal under stress, the hum of a drive core, the rising whine of thrusters.

Back dirtside. Back on Earth, on the island. Still getting used to that.

Kaidan had sent a text as promised. Carrying and overlarge duffel bag, in the same outfit he'd left the island in. Cargo pants, t-shirt, boots. A little more wear and tear on the boots, the leather of one toe had a distinct bitemark impression from one of the little Kroglettes. He smiled every time he looked at it. She was his favorite, the feisty little runt of the first hatch.

It had been a good few days after a very long month. He still badly needed sleep, but that was a never-ending problem lately, and had been for over a year now. At least maybe now his brain could content itself with something. The mission had been a success. Impromptu and done mostly out of panic, the Hail Mary had succeeded. The galaxy wouldn't be the same, but he couldn't help but think it would be better. Maybe a little more stable. Maybe give him a little more room to breathe for just a little while longer.

He waited for the portal to open and when it did, he stepped through. Back to the island he went.

[For the one or two, could be open if you have a reason to be there, sure. Wanderer returns. OCD below.]

No oppressive feelings, no monsters waiting to kill him or turn him into one of them or worse lurking in the shadows. Kanan was tentatively hopeful that things were getting back to more-or-less normal. Sure, his TA was a bird making little bird footprints all over one of the rooms of the Ghost with finger paints, and he could still feel the residual damage of the last few weeks haunting more than a few residents of the island.

But right now? Right now, Kanan's worst concern was surviving the heat. He'd brought Stance to the park today - yes, in his vesty-vest - and was letting him merrily harass the ducks while Kanan himself staked out a spot in the shade under one of the park's larger trees, where he was running through lightsaber forms in slow-motion, working on restraint and balance every bit as much as form and... not overheating and dying, really.

It seemed to be working out for Kanan, anyway.

[personal profile] myownface
There was a tradition on Fandom Island, for Pride. The island herself upheld it every year thus far, making a beautiful rainbow arc across the sky for the whole of the weekend. This year was no different; a rainbow, in full colour, reached up and stretched itself clear across the sky, and as it did so, a brilliant blue crept across the sky with it, and then down, until the blue touched the tips of the trees and green started to spread out, as well.

By the time the rainbow had finished his arc across the sky, the entire island was in beautiful, vibrant colour again, just in time for the parade.

Like last year, the parade itself was to start on the Causeway, follow Griffin Lane to Galactica Drive, Serendipity Place, Godiva Street, back onto Serendipity until it turned into Loon, then Chimera. Then one final turn onto Apocalypse before ending up at the Park, where there would be a picnic shortly after!

The weather was great, the island was bright, and there was no small amount of Pride today! Time for a parade!

Well... that whole week could have gone worse, Kanan supposed. The itching feeling of dread had more or less faded, which left just the lingering bouts of free-floating trauma around the island that was usual in the wake of this sort of thing.

Which meant it was a Friday as usual for training and the like, though today he'd brought Stance, and he'd made his way to the park rather than the warehouse, letting the pup run free to harangue the ducks while he sat himself down under a tree in the shade, and he read more of that book that the moose had foisted off on him.

He didn't necessarily agree with it all, but he could see some of the wisdom behind it all the same.

There were a few practice swords propped up against the tree, in case anybody was feeling up to training or sparring today, but otherwise... eh. He was more or less just taking it easy this afternoon.

With a book.

Ever have one of those days where you felt almost cheated about not having a hangover? That was Zack today as he made his way into the animal shelter and pretty much immediately set to work. He'd gotten home later than late last night, had trudged his way more-or-less soberly to crash on the sofa, and was now at work, quietly holding a grudge against the SOLDIER treatments that made 'drink to take the edge off' into an hours-long slog that mostly amounted to, 'drink one of everything to experience the thrill of a minor buzz.'

If Hojo wasn't dead, he'd kick him for not warning him in advance about that particular side effect.

Not that he would have especially cared, at the totally reasonable age of twelve, if he had.

Ah well. At least there were puppies, here. It was hard to go wrong with puppies. And kitties. And-- it must have been Easter recently, huh? Far too many rabbits and baby chickens, already starting to trickle in as people realized that, yes, pets took effort.

Kaidan knew something was off the minute he walked out of his building. There were more children than usual by a factor of many. The children all seemed to be accompanied by an adult or two, so he wrote that right off as 'not his problem, they're not feral' and headed to the Perk. No way was he dealing with a weekend like this without enough coffee and sugar to drown in.

He ordered his usual coffee confection, something with caramel and chocolate syrup on the whipped cream, and went to take a table in the back where he could watch through the window from a safe enough distance. Kind of cataloging the children. They didn't seem to be island residents made suddenly small. That made him feel better.

Zack had gotten back to the island late last night, too late to call anybody to see about collecting his dog, but he'd been far too antsy to sleep, and the idea of going back to the apartment to sit alone for hours hadn't appealed to him in the least. And so he'd walked. Done laps of the island's stairs at far-too-late until it had bled into far-too-early, and had eventually wound up at the park, doing squats to work off some excess energy.

There was a lot on his mind, that was what he was attributing all of this anxiousness to, and given the fact that he was SOLDIER, it was entirely possible that was all that was going on, there. Not that it really made much difference with Zack, granted. Even on a normal week, who could tell the difference between being friendly and being flirty, when it came to him?

Somewhere around the crack of dawn, he'd traded in squats for sword forms, and was absolutely murdering the heck out of an invisible enemy, wielding the sword he'd had Amaya make for him before he'd left. It was a pretty close stab at mimicking the standard SOLDIER sword, though it came without the unpleasant associations and, he had learned while on his walkabout looking for Iris, was much more sturdy than the mass-produced disasters he'd broken over and over again in his tie working for ShinRa. He hadn't regretted leaving the buster sword with Amaya at all.

Kanan was meditating.

Wednesday had left him with a lot to chew on, and...

And look, he was mostly over it. He really was. Not much of what had been foisted on him while the island was glitching out was new, per se. The penguin thing? That was new.

The giant wolf thing? Definitely new.

But being Caleb again off and on was basically old hat at this point, and it wasn't the first time the island had dragged him into fresh-burned darkness, so most of what he was meditating on today was how Jack wanted to go to Coruscant, to see for herself what it was he was fighting for, what it was he was fighting, and he had so damn many mixed feelings about that, he was probably going to meditate right up until someone arrived to put a stop to that.

After a morning practicing sword forms, Kaidan headed to the Onsen for some relaxing in the hot water. He was not prepared for the chickens.

There were chickens of all shapes and sizes, some very tiny and some the size of large dogs. Strutting around or sitting on the warm rocks, they were on every surface except the water itself.

Kaidan blinked and laughed a little. "Ok, well. Sure. Sharing the hot spring with some birds. Why not." He stepped carefully through the poultry until he could sink into the water. One of the chickens, a fluffy little Silkie, came bobbing over while making little churbling noises. It clearly wanted attention. Or it was worried he was going to drown, one of those. Kaidan tentatively held a dry hand out and the chicken scooted under it immediately. He offered very gentle petting/scritches and the chicken made some contented little noises. Stepping from side to side, it eventually sank down and fluffed out, eyes half-closed with happiness and tilting its head to get the scritches exactly where it wanted them.

There were worse ways to spend his time. It was oddly relaxing, the almost purring noises the chicken was making.

If it wasn't for the rain today, Kanan would have been out in the park training.

It was warm outside. Comfortably warm. Warm enough that he'd have ditched the long jacket entirely if not for the water coming down. But at the very least, the sound of rain hitting the ceiling of the warehouse was a soothing one, and it made falling into his morning meditations that much easier.

Come the afternoon, when he had a remote and his lightsaber out, it was just one more distraction. But that wasn't a bad thing. After all, it wasn't as though he'd be working without distractions back home. Ever. So, overall, a win.

Still, he couldn't help but be a little bit wistful about it. Maybe next week.

Kaidan was at the gym. He'd missed sword practice the day before because he'd wound up on the roof of the MCA doing some calibrations for EDI. Not Dirty She'd made some notes when he'd taken Sparkle flying and wanted the items taken care of before anyone else hit the void. Kaidan had lost track of time, finding an odd sort of comfort in the work and he'd dragged it out, checking seals, greasing what needed to be greased, fine-tuning things on the shuttle. By the time he'd rolled out and washed up it was too late. He'd stopped by anyway but the warehouse was empty. He'd borrowed his regular sword.

Which had him practicing Soresu at an hour of the morning most people weren't awake. Hours before he'd told Sparkle and Hernando to show up for the self defense class. It, too, was calming and right now, he could use all the calm he could muster.

That being said, he'd be ready when they showed up. They'd start off with situational awareness again, work on blocks for a bit, and then he'd take them through 'what to do if you're grabbed'. It seemed appropriate.

It sure had been a pair of weeks. Iceland had been nice and relaxing and then they'd come back to the island. Where everything seemed to have gone wrong for several of his friends. Strangely - and it shouldn't have been but yet there it was - it wasn't random island occurrences, it was mainland things in all cases. Jack had gone on a trip to New York to work her stress off and he was proud of her. She'd done it constructively and thoughtfully and without fatalities in her wake and that was definitely progress. She'd taken Sparkle's feelings into account and adapted her behavior to accommodate and that was a pretty huge step. A hopeful one.

Kaidan went for a run to clear his head. It wasn't doing all that much good. Thought about doing his own trolling for muggers but just now that didn't seem like the best plan in the world even if it would have been pretty darn cathartic. He ran the stairs for awhile until he worked up a good muscle burn and then went for a slower jog through the trails in the park.

Thought about calling Kanan and finding out what his plans for the weekend were and, if he didn't yet have any, suggesting they go find something to do. Bad life choices seemed to be the name of the game this week and he had a few reasons to want some of his own. Yet, because his brain was contrary, he also wanted .. downtime. Quiet. Calm. Something productive and not fueled by adrenaline and stress. Which was why he hadn't made the call yet and wasn't sure he would.

For now, he ran, letting his brain do its thing while his feet took him along the paths on autopilot.

Sparkle... was not actually certain when it had gone from being last week to this one. Sure, he'd been around. Hanging out with people. Getting some sick ink done. Self-defense lessons and yelling at hecklers. He'd skipped his other job on Sunday but he'd gone to try to bully Atton into taking care of himself with a hangover, and he'd done the Monday broadcast. All actual, tangible markers of the passage of time.

But it still felt weird to be here at work again today.

... Possibly because after bailing early last week for an impromptu flight lesson with Kaidan, the shelves... were still kind of depressingly bare. At least his head was on slightly better than it had been, and so he was sighing and pulling out the catalogues, continuing on the merry path to slowly just straight-up converting Iris' shop into a Lush.

A Lush that also sold DavidsTea.

What? It wasn't like he knew how to make that stuff any better than shampoo.

Kaidan had agreed to start self-defense lessons for two of his friends. They'd talked about it for months but recent events had galvanized it so here he was at the gym, setting up one of the side rooms with a double layer of floor mats and some padded gloves and other assorted things.

He'd handwaved told both men to wear cups or other groin protection. He didn't think they'd need it tonight but they should get used to moving in it at the very least. Eventually they'd be pairing off against one another and they'd need it.

For now, what he needed was padding. Not for taking falls - they wouldn't be doing any of that for awhile due to Hernando's head injury - but as a safe but unstable footing for them to learn spacial relations on.

He'd get around to placing an order in a bit. Maybe after coffee. The last thing he needed today was coffee. Maybe after tea. Ugh. He wasn't awake enough for tea. Probably coffee, then...

He'd probably make it to about noon before closing up early and just bailing. His mind was still all over the place. Stupid mind. Stupid employment. He could just go home and clean the apartment some more. That would be great. Or maybe find his way to, like, the animal shelter and roll around in kitties, if the vet there would let him.

Trip participants were told to gather in front of the Portalocity office with their reasonable amounts of luggage in preparation of a week-long trip through Iceland in a series of mini-buses with limited storage space. So if it didn't fit underneath, you will absolutely be holding it. All week. Are the cute outfits really worth it? Are you suuuuuure?

But there would be wifi throughout the trip. No one needed that level of whining.

Well, Kanan had figured after yesterday that he'd been pretty much finished with flowers for a while, since the apartment was hopelessly full of them until they had wilted enough to convince him that it was safe to throw them out without guilt, or something.

And then he'd shown up at the warehouse today, Stance trotting along at his side, to see... the giant pineapple built out of yellow roses and green carnations courtesy of Kaidan. And the much less insane bouquet of rainbow-spotted carnations with the card covered in quokka prints. He just buried his face in his hand and laughed helplessly for a few minutes. What the hell was this week, anyway? He made a mental note to bring treats to the T42 for the quokkas, to shake Kaidan by the shoulders, and to potentially go into business selling potpourri here on the island for the foreseeable future.

And then he made a point to pose Stance with the boquet of rainbow-spotted carnations tucked between his front paws - with very stern instructions to not eat the carnations - and sent the resulting photo to Rey and Summer both before moving the flowers up onto the top of some of the stacked crates so that Stance couldn't make himself sick by chewing on things he really shouldn't.

... There was really no meditating to be done with that pineapple there today, though. Running through forms with a practise sword would do, instead.

Huh. Had they moved?

It had been a helluva weekend and then Monday had happened. Kaidan needed to relax so he grabbed a towel and his swimsuit and headed to the Onsen for some quality soak time.

It was quiet when he got there. He had the pool to himself for the moment so he slipped in and leaned back against the rocks to soak. A small towel, one of the ones supplied, was dipped in the warm water, folded and dropped across his upper face.

His mind was still kind of processing but one of the things causing him some stress was a lack of check-in.

Laying there in the water, he sent out a tentative mental knock. "Jono? You up?"

Jonothon had spent yesterday begging for quiet, and quiet hadn't come. He'd spent yesterday begging for a good many things, really. Quiet. Understanding. A nice, deep breath. Apparently none of those things were meant to be, and as much as 'burying his head under a pillow' had given him some minor placebo effect, the truth of the matter was, there were voices. They were deafening in his mind's eye. And he had no bloody clue how to escape them.

Today, he'd decided to try distance, since begging for quiet into an uncaring void hadn't seemed to work. And, to some minor degree, proximity did seem to make some difference. If he headed in one direction, the voices, the murmurs in his mind got louder, more overwhelming, like the crowd had only gotten larger still, like he was walking from a small town toward a large city.

... Which was essentially what had happened.

The other direction had made things somewhat more tolerable, the dull roar or human life shifting until it was something softer, like murmurs on the outskirts of a quiet room, and he would have kept going, except that eventually he was met with an expanse of open water set out before him, just daring him to try.

He stared at it in helpless silence for a long while, and then just took a seat right there on the beach in the snow and the rain, quietly defeated. He'd live with murmurs, then. Tolerate the cold.

He wasn't going back toward the roar.

Yeah, the whole 'early for meditating' thing seemed to be working out well enough for Kanan, and so he was showing up at the warehouse bright and early for exactly that, settling in on the floor to reach out through the Force and just... contemplate.

Apparently he got right into that today. He had a lot of things he needed to sort out, things he'd been tabling for a long while, and sort of managed to get swept up in that.

So anyone who came in to the warehouse to find him today would see him planted on the floor, eyes closed, unmoving, dust motes strangely still in the air around him.

Proving at least to himself that the trees no longer caused the twitching phobia. Or, at least, not nearly to the point he couldn't just ignore it and enjoy the walk. The weather was nice. The sun was even peeking through the clouds every so often. He had no particular place to be so he just let himself wander all of the trails in turn. And it was completely possible that his attention was mostly directed toward the floor while he trained with his lightsaber in the afternoon.

He wasn't paranoid, damn it. That would be absurd.

Kaidan wasn't jogging, he was running. It was -9C and the air coming off the ocean was almost bitter with chill. The beach was deserted in the pre-dawn and that suited him. Mostly he wanted to run and let his head sort itself out. It hadn't been a light week. There were, Kaidan thought wryly, going to be few of those in the future now that Jack was here. It wasn't a bad thing. In a way, it was comfortingly familiar. He appreciated her viewpoint, even when it was aimed at him.

And if she was here, she wasn't back home terrorizing governments or making heads of state cry or whatever she did for fun these days. She was also not on the Normandy casually telling Vega his fly was unzipped when he walked past just to make him check. Maybe Jimmy'd get time to settle in and grow some confidence roots. Wouldn't be the worst thing to happen.

His feet beat a tattoo against the rocks in rhythmic thumps as he paced the running. Made a mental note to bring a sling with a thermos of coffee in it next time. Water was great for thirst but it was cold out here.

[Open. Jack's thread is last.]
[And the sparring turned into some serious emotional trauma. Yum.]

Luke's, Sunday

Was Kanan at Luke's today?

Miraculously so, yes. He'd come in riding dogback with a piece torn out of a pillowcase to wrap around his shoulders to keep him warm for the trek in. His hair was loose, which was driving him slightly up a wall, and his feet were bare, which was less than pleasant, but so long as he had a very, very large dog to hang out with, he was faring well enough even in this weather.

Did he cheat and use the Force in order to unlock the door today, letting Stance nose his way in from there? Absolutely. He used it to get the doorstop in place so that it was open a crack for folks of diminutive size, too.

And was he content to just sit back and let the cook and the dishwasher continue doing their thing in the kitchen, the cook riding on the dishwasher's shoulder and barking orders for the day? You bet.

The specials board today was written in the dishwasher's hand, too.

Welcome to Luke's!
Today's Specials:
Tiny Pancakes

If anybody needed Kanan, he'd be sitting comfortably on his dog's head, clad in nothing but a pair of pants and a scrap of torn fabric around his otherwise bare shoulders like a cloak, informing Stance that he was a Very Good Boy, indeed.

Kanan was doing that thing again. That thing where he showed up at the warehouse early in the morning on Friday to get some solo training in before people inevitably started showing up come the afternoon. Today he was splitting his time pretty evenly, figuring he'd get a few hours of meditation in for the morning, and then he'd switch to running through forms with his lightsaber a couple of hours before people started arriving, so that he'd be in a mindset for that sort of thing already.

The fact that he was trying to reach out even farther than usual into the Force with his meditations this morning or that he was going a little bit extra with the Force leaps and other assorted acrobatics - at least from a half-trained Padawan perspective - had nothing to do with him being slightly intimidated at the prospect of spending time later with... you know... basically a small army of people who were Masters in their own right.

Also, shut up. It was important training anyway.

Still with no real clue about what to do with himself on Friday mornings around this place without a class, Kanan had made his way to the warehouse early again. All the better for pulling out his holocron and meditating on it, watching the recording of Skywalker going over modifications he'd made to the Ataru form back during the war. He only really used Ataru when pitting lightsaber against blaster fire, but the refresher was good, and anything Kanan could use to get an edge, even if he never wound up igniting his lightsaber back home, he was going to take.

Keeping your saber moving is the key to deflecting the fire of multiple adversaries...

Kanan hoped it would never come to that.

He had seen enough to know that, now that he had fully committed himself to Hera's cause, it eventually would. And so he had his lightsaber out and was following along.

Practice these exercises mindfully, and you'll see improvement, I promise.

"Yeah," Kanan sighed, "that's the hope, isn't it?"

One, two, three, pivot...

Liam had woken with a restless sort of energy today. His usual morning routine of gossiping with Verity's mice, going for a run, and returning to her apartment with breakfast had failed to burn much of it off.

So, eventually, he made his way to the gym and the practice mats, running through Tai Chi forms as a way to try and channel that energy in to something productive.

It was kind of working.
uncertain_dume: (Meditating)

It was an odd thing, to have his schedule shifted around somewhat through the week. Yesterday had been Kanan's class, for example. In two days, there would be his Luke's shift, and then, the three days to follow would be empty. Free for him to... take in the bar, or go to movie night or spend time with friends or to lean, hard, into the smallest beads of a rebellion back home.

And after the way his conversation with Hera had ended at the countdown on Monday night, he felt, perhaps, like he was going to need to put a lot more of his focus into mostly that last one.

Be a better rebel. Being a better Jedi was something that he'd have to put his efforts into while he was here, four days on, three days off again, give it his all while he could and then shove it down somewhere dark, with a disassembled lightsaber and a holocron that remained hidden away entirely and the Force only a distant thought belonging to a destroyed Order who people already spoke of in hushed tones, like figments of their imaginations, like legends of things that went bump in the night.

When he made his way to the warehouse today, he would spend his time waiting for people by clearing a place on the floor, sitting himself on it, and then meditating in the Force. And that meditation left the room looking faintly celestial as the glitter still left over from the girls' holiday decorating hung in the air around him. His eyes remained shut as the vague beginnings of something that could almost be mistaken for tiny galaxies in their own right emerged from the chaos, spiral arms reaching out as those specks of reflective dust found a lazy orbit in the currents of the Force.

He had arrived early today, having no classes in the morning. And until people arrived or reached out to him otherwise, this was going to be how he was content to spend hours.

It had been a while since Liam had made his way in to the station, what with holidays and visiting Verity's family, and so he'd completely expected the stack of paperwork that awaited him. Less expected was the present sitting on his desk.

It took him a moment to place the writing on the tag, but once he did, he opened up his Global and shot off a text to Kaidan with a belated thanks.

Then... it was back to sorting through paperwork with a faintly dismayed look on his face as he did so.

Did it feel a little weird to be throwing a New Year's party on the first day of school? A little, and Kitty didn't envy people who might have to teach tomorrow. But regardless, a party was happening. Signs had gone up around town to advertise, the bar was decked out in gold decorations (semi-tastefully, Tino had done a lot of it) and there were party hats that everyone was expected to take, even if they didn't wear them.

They were festive, and looked good in pictures.

So come one, come all, because it's a small town and your hostess was unaware of anything else going on!

It was Friday, where else would Kanan be but here in his warehouse again, giving a speculative look around at the decorations that were still strewn about in the wake of Christmas.

... Well, the holiday had come and gone, and while he had come in here in order to do some training, he figured it probably wouldn't hurt if he took some time to at least unwrap the crates and pull down some of the garland.

Not to mention the glitter drifts that were still spread out across the floor.

The lights and the painting of his dog in the Christmas hat, though? That could stay. Kanan had no problems with better illumination in here, or of Stance's big dumb face staring down at him while he trained.

Far be it from any amount of snow to keep Kaidan from obsessively jogging. Sparkle had mentioned the pond, he was curious, so he went to check it out.

The pond was frozen over. The ducks were annoyed. Kaidan jogged down to the edge and gave an experimental step with one foot. The ice cracked easily and completely under pressure and water seeped up. Making a 'tsk' noise of disappointment, he pulled his foot back and headed to a bench. A quick sweep of his hand shoved the snow off enough it could be sat on.

The ducks took immediate advantage of the cracked ice, quacking and nudging the ice shards out of the hole with their bills until they could all cram in and sit in it.

"Aren't you cold?" he asked, watching them.

The ducks ignored him with as much dignity as a passel of cantankerous, bickering, stubborn ducks could ignore someone.

The plan, ideally, was for Sparkle to take it easy today at Demon Marcus. After all, he'd already taken care of his gift exchange thingie, and all of his holiday shopping had been taken care of over the past few days on the mainland. Now that the weather was clear and the killer snowmen were gone, Sparkle was ready to get back to work, maybe sell a bunch of winter clothing that people had no doubt wished they had over the course of the week, and then kick his feet up and drink some hot chocolate or something.

... The actuality when he got there, on the other hand?

Sparkle sighed as he squinted at the 'Demon Marcus' sign, just barely visible above the door, which wasn't visible behind the snow that had drifted in through the storm.

"Oookay," he muttered. "I guess I get to shovel."

Hernando was a little tired. They had worked in shifts through the night again to keep the snow clear. It had finally stopped. By the time he made it out of bed, showered and headed into the store, Kaidan had cleared the doorway of the final drift and, Hernando noted, also cleared the sidewalk back in the direction of town.

Stifling a yawn, he set out pastries. Instead of taking a position behind the counter he made himself a cup of coffee and went to lounge in one of the comfy chairs by the fireplace.

Dave hopped up into his lap. This surprised Hernando a little. The quokka still looked grumpy but seemed to be seeking affection so Hernando tentatively began stroking his fur.

The sign was still in the window.

Kanan had a lightsaber in one hand and a blaster in the other.

Kanan could be back in the Ghost, enjoying a shielded ship with power and heating and hot caf. But no, he was out here, wearing the heaviest coat he had and a smile on his face as he carved through snowmen, using this as his training exercise for the day.

They were attacking the island, he felt very few compunctions about cutting them down with superheated plasma in the name of training, no. A slash of his lightsaber here, a few headshots from his blaster as another contingent of snowmen rounded the corner... reducing these things to slush was actually somewhat cathartic. So, no, Kanan wasn't in the warehouse today. But that didn't mean he wasn't getting his lightsaber work in. Not at all.

And today he'd even left the dog on the ship. Sorry, buddy.

Hernando and Kaidan had taken turns through the night to wake up and shovel the snow clear of the entrance and window of the shop. Kaidan had begun building something he called 'berms' by tightly packing the snow into mounds around the door. He'd built a sort of icy..archway?.. around the door that kept the snow from drifting in and blocking it.

Dave was sitting on the windowsill and glaring out at the snowfall. The other quokka were cheerfully hopping about as though the weather didn't concern them in the least.

The interior of the store had changed. A roaring fireplace took up one entire end. A giant copper kettle, siphon tubes running up from the lid and across the wall to the hot water dispensers, hung from an iron hook over it. The walls had become stone-clad, reflecting the heat. Thick woven wool rugs were layered on the floor. Tables and chairs had rearranged themselves closer to the fire to be joined by large plush armchairs closer to the counter.

The counter and hot water dispensers remained the same. Hernando began setting out pastries.

The sign rattled. Hernando let out a relieved sigh he had not been aware he had been withholding and went to see to it.

Kaidan had spent the wee small hours of the morning teaching Hernando how to properly use a Yooper Scooper and standard snow shovel. Then there'd been an impromptu snowball fight. After, he hiked back to the CIC, clearing the sidewalks on both sides of the street between the two buildings as he went. Had shovels, was travelling.

Snow was cleared from the walk and from the back stairs. Then he went up and proactively shoveled and salted the roof, especially around the shuttle's docking legs and door. "You going to be ok up here alone EDI?" he asked.

"I am a shuttle, Kaidan," EDI responded, amused, "The weather doesn't bother me."

That wasn't what he'd meant. "Well, I'm only a comm call away," he assured her.

"Shuttle, Kaidan," she reminded him, still amused.

He patted the shuttle door anyway before heading inside to do battle with IKEA furniture.

Unfolding the directions, he frowned at them. "Good god, what even is this?"

It was going to be a day.

Okay, so... Kanan could live with the holiday decorating that had clearly gone on in his warehouse overnight. It was... ostentatious, he figured was the word for it... a little more well-illuminated than he was used to.

There had been some, ah, some paint involved. And the crates were almost all wrapped up to look like large presents. He suspected that whatever it was that had gone on in here hadn't been the island's holiday weirdness, but he was willing to give it a day or so to process what to make of it before getting too concerned.

Maybe by then he'd admit it was all actually kind of nice. In a fairy lights and tinsel sort of way. He'd have to clear the tinsel out if he wanted to bring his dog back around, but the lights were fine enough, and... He glanced at the pile of training weapons and squinted a little. Were those candy stripes?

...

No, you know what, he was going to just use his lightsaber instead. A tactic that lasted all of three steps into his first form, when he lunged forward and found himself holding a well-lit tree branch.

........

So if anybody came into the warehouse today, Kanan was going to just be on the floor, meditating, with holiday baubles suspended in the air around him. Today seemed like a good day for meditation.

Kanan squinted at the string of lights that had crept up behind him in the warehouse as he trained. His lightsaber wasn't made out of peppermint today? He was training. That was the rule. Any day that would let him train, he was going to train.

The creeping lights, however, meant that it was going to be an eventful training session. A good many of them found themselves being cut clean in two before they seemed to get a clue and kept their distance from him.

It was, uh, possible that Kanan had tied one of the halves around one of the warehouse's support beams as a warning to the others. Crude? Absolutely. Functional? Definitely.

He'd left the dog at home today anyway, though. This was not a situation he wanted Stance in the middle of, especially not while there would be blades swinging around.

Hernando headed to the Perk after he closed the shop on Saturday. He truly enjoyed spending time in his shop but there were also times he wished to be a customer somewhere he could sit and watch the greater community walk around outside.

He obtained a cinnamon coffee and sat at one of the tables. A newspaper taken from his pocket was unfolded and he began to read. It was a paper from Mexico City because he liked to keep up with the news back home and just across the causeway in the nearby town was a small bodega that carried them.

An advert inside for one of Lito's movies. He quickly folded past that page.

The weather outside was warmish but also very damp. Sporadic rain would come and go, hitting the windows with a soft patter. It made being indoors with a hot coffee a simple but comfortable thing.
