It could be January outside all it wanted to, as far as Romeo was concerned. He was still going to put a more welcoming display in the store window. So it was all bikinis and shorts and designer sundresses there, and he'd relegated sweaters and other winter clothes to neat bins and tables at the side of the store.

He adjusted a bathing suit strap and admired his work before retreating to the counter to make a sign.

That in place, he was back at the counter, realizing with some pride that today marked a full year for him in Fandom.

Liz was on time for her first shift since arriving back to Fandom after the holidays, she quickly made sure that everything was set up and that the specials had been put out.

Welcome to the Arm's Hotel!

Daisy was certainly a rare sort, in that when she came into the station that Monday and found plenty of paperwork sitting on her desk, she was feeling very glad and perhaps even a little eager. This, of course, was mostly because most of the paperwork was filled with information that needed to be entered into the computer, into the system, and a day at the desk doing that in between sips of nice hot tea was second only to going out and busting up criminals.

And since that one happened so rarely around here, she was certainly content with computer data entry.

Merlin's first 'class' in the afternoon had granted Arthur a good excuse to dismiss the boy early that morning. While his presence was a comfort (a fact Arthur would not be quick to admit to), it had severely limited Arthur's ability to think about their problem clearly.

He'd roamed the island in search of another way out, but as he had already expected, there was none. Loath to return to the dorms, where he wouldn't be allowed to carry his sword, Arthur slowed when he reached the beach.

He'd seen a plane of water this large only a few times in his life. The lakes near Camelot tended towards the smaller. He spared a look towards the horizon for orientation, then peered down at the ground.

He slipped his sword out of its sheath with the hand attached to the arm he could actually use, swung it once to test his strength, and then moved into slow practiced drills.

It had been a while since he'd gotten to use the sword, and there was little that made him feel more useless or pathetic than being unable to do so. By now his damaged shoulder had healed enough to take the chance one-armed, and he felt relieved.

Maybe he should consider simply keeping a broom nearby at all times inside the dorms. They could be good fun. In combat.

With a new semester and new students and a new year, Lacey had plenty to distract her from the very troublesome (it really was) question of why people would play football in January -- things like possibly picking up a couple of new employees to cover some of the open shifts.

***
Flash-cut: cover of the Dog River Howler. The headline reads:
ABSENTEE RUBY OWNER SOLICITING STUDENTS?

***

. . . not that kind of picking up! Honestly.

She had a new HELP WANTED sign up in the window, tastefully decorated with little flowers and vines drawn around the border, the sign framed on either side by a cute little teddy bear sporting an "I *heart* Canola" t-shirt. Lacey wondered about Mayor Fitzy sometimes, but as far as tourism ploys went it was a little less questionable than trying to build the world's biggest hoe.

Today's Specials
Broccoli Cheddar Soup
Potatoes au Gratin
Welsh Rarebit

Luke's is open, but unlike the specials board, the diner itself is not covered in bees cheese.

[OOC: Yep, we have available shifts: Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday are open, or I can switch Lacey off Monday if you'd like that day. Tag me on email or just send a character on in.]

One of the first things Chad did when he came in and opened the store was lean (carefully) on the counter with some papers and things that looked somewhat managerial and started figuring out if they should or needed to hire in anyone. He figured it might not hurt to get Teyla's old shift covered.

So there was a sign in the window: Now Hiring - Tuesday Shift

And then Chad went back to leaning (carefully) on the counter and went through some magazines. It was clearly a very strenuous job, being managerial.

Today's Mix: New Mix

To say Teddy was glad to be back at work and surrounded by comics might be a bit of an understatement. Sure, it had been less than a week in space, but he was trying to catch up on what he missed as a puppy as well!

Just ignore the occasion squawks of outrage or cheers as he caught up on his series.

Worf had forsaken the cap he had been wearing all weekend and was glad to be done with it. Hopefully all the new students realized by now this place was not normal by any means and he could be free of any inane questions they might have.

He made sure the store was in proper order before opening the doors and rather hoping that no customers came in.

[OCD up! Please read OOC notes.]

After class, Joan hurried into town to open the flower shop.

She didn't have time to make a fancy sign, so the store was "e"-less today.

Sokka had a lot on his mind this morning, after having just shared tea with General Iroh. So much so that once he started making "SALE: All school supplies 15% off!" and "Special discount for new students" signs and putting them in the window, he sort of... forgot to stop.

Eventually, he looked up and realized that the front of the store was all window dressing and no window, and that he could no longer see out. He solved the problem by making a BIGGER sign saying "I assure you, we're open!" and pasting it on the front of the window, over the other signs. Ingenuity at its finest.

Then he grabbed a Squishy and settled in to a long day of selling things to people for money.

Today's Squishy flavors: Red, Grape Judas, Roast Beef

When Cable opened up his newspaper in the office today, the first thing that pulled his attention granted him the feeling of a mission well-executed. Which had made it a pretty good vacation, as far as he was concerned.

Of course, Sri Lanka was just a minor player in comparison to the entire mess in Israel right now, but that one was a little too huge and delicate to tackle. He put the paper aside, took a sip of his cup of coffee, and called Irene to check in on her.

He predicted she'd spend at least the first five minutes mocking his vacation. That was fine. She wasn't getting any pictures.

Last week, he'd been with the Ewoks, and so he couldn't go to work. This week meant the start of classes, and also Ender's return to Stark Industries. He was happy about it, in that way where it kept him occupied with things, occupied with a trade, occupied with a future.

Settling in with the database, he ran a few searches for faster-than-light drives (and if that wasn't an odd idea, against the very laws of physics, he didn't know what was) in the hopes of finding this 'warp drive' Worf had been talking about.

It could be useful.

[ and Stark Industries is open! ]

Coyote hadn't even managed to meet all the old people in town, much less the new ones. Still, the cockroach had a point. It was his responsibility as a salesperson to fleece the newbies for all they were worth welcome the new students and citizens with random crap valuable wares .

And that was why Lloyd Commerce was here. If Coyote wasn't needed to sell the native stuff, then Lloyd was around to tell you about the wonders of the Miracle.

That's Miracle vacuum cleaner, of course.

Funny how Lloyd and Coyote never seemed to be in the store at the same time. Huh.

Seregil opened up the shop and settled down behind the counter with a book he'd found on some of this world's past royalty. He figured it couldn't hurt to get some background on the subject matter before going to his first class this afternoon.

As she opened the HQ, Triela couldn't help wondering if the influx of newbies would be good for business or not.

Not that she was entirely sure what 'good for business' constituted for her bosses. It wasn't entirely clear what they did beyond be really crazy and arrest their employees. She still wasn't sure why she'd taken this job.

Oh, wait, yes she was. They let her carry a gun.

Standing toward the back of the store, Iroh sighed contentedly. It was days yet before he would open the Fandom branch of the Jasmine Dragon (the Tea Weevil didn't sound any less stupid with a second consideration, and why vary a winning formula?) but there was something satisfying about being set up already, bar a few finishing touches. He threw a heavy silk cloth over a low table at the back of the store, placing two portraits on top – the well-worn but recently retouched painting of his dear Lu Ten, and a much more recent picture of Zuko in full Firelord regalia. He'd salvaged it after it had been deemed inappropriate due to a facial expression that could very nearly, if one squinted and was in a good mood, be considered a smile. Everyone knew Zuko was reforming the Fire Nation but, well. Baby steps. The pictures gave him a sense of completion, leaving just one thing to do. He opened the front door just a crack – not enough to appear as if the teahouse was open, but enough that it could be pushed to if someone needed to make an enquiry – and hung a handpainted sign in the glass.

Bender had set the forge up once he'd got into work. He found some old and worn horseshoes in a bucket and set to bending.

His first attempt was too small, the second too short, and after that, well...

Bender now had a stack of oddly angular horseshoes at which he was idly twisting. Maybe he should just beat a change into the shape of their hoofs instead.

Up with the sun, Kael'thas had actually deigned to go in to his store today, only to find himself with a resignation in the till and a box of miscellaneous texts and grimoires just arrived from a supplier.

The resignation was regrettable, the books were heavy - Kael folded the letter and put it aside, already directing books to their respective sections. What else had he missed, distracted as he had been this past while?

[OOC: First thread is being held for someone specific, but otherwise open!]

Having successfully avoided the new students, Temari looked forward to a nice, quiet day at work. It might be interesting to hear that she was actually the more social of her village with that sort of attitude.

Of course, she also might have been avoiding thinking about her first few weeks in Fandom. Being a pony was something she never wanted to think about again.
